Btw: If you want to have better sounds in your TIE Fighter videos, I can send my Gravis Ultrasound DOS driver to you. It works well with DosBox and it's internal audio/video capturer. My intro video proves that.
So, if you want to have it, just inform me and that driver is yours. :-)
Dave, you might wanna put the CPU cycles on DosBox at 10000 or greater. Press Control + F12 to increase it to your liking, and you'll definitely see the difference.
Seriously dude. Today's hardware can emulate faster than last century's machines ran!

Here are my DosBox CPU settings. TIE Fighter works fine with them:
core=auto
cputype=auto
cycles=max
cycleup=100
cycledown=100
I use DosBox 0.73 btw.
