  • what does she say to put to sleep at 2:00 ??

  • Someone said that Bette was both a broad and a lady all at the same time. Great comment. Bette is a unique one-of-a-kind talent, and she was BRILLIANT on this episode. Great clip!

  • the "wipe the tear from the eye" was total bull shit.

  • @septip123 You should be ashamed and die. He was scencire.

  • Great clip. Bette is awesome and Johnny we miss you. Where are the calibre of entertainers like these? People with true talent who work on their craft and respect their audiences. Try to get Spears to sing a cappella and be charming and quick witted in a show with the likes of Johnny, Bette, Robin WIlliams.

  • Johnny Carson, Ed McMahon, Richard Pryor, Walter Matthau, Jack Lemmon, Dudley Moore, Buddy Ebsen, Don Knotts, Harvey Korman....

many of the greats have left us.

  • He shouldn't have had Robin Williams on. Robin is the most hated comedian in show business, a soulless husk. No thank you. Robin Williams you creep.

  • @SumnerMurrayRedstone yes, he always want to be in the spotlight

  • @SumnerMurrayRedstone I have to say, I never really liked Robin Williams, and when I saw this show the night it was telecast, I thought he was a little embarrassing. Bette killed it -- she owned the whole show -- and he was just his erratic, unfunny self (in my opinion). I kind of felt bad for him, because I thought he knew he was sinking next to Bette.

  • @thisisittt

I used to love Robin Williams but I began to sour on him and this is a perfect example of why. He couldn't let Bette Midler bask in her own glory. He had to stick himself in the middle of it. I remember watching him with the then unknown cast of Dead Poet Society on Donahue. He wouldn't let any of them finish a sentence. But this clip reminds us of how much we all miss Johnny Carson. All of the rest of them put together can't shine his shoes.

  • The song she sang is a take off of the song You Made Me Love You which Al Jolson sang in 1913. Judy Garland also sang it in the movie Broadway Melody of 1938 to Clark Gables picture. If you want to see it type in Judy Garland - Dear Mr Gable.

  • I love that woman! lol

  • SHE IS LEGEND. Miss you Johnny!!! The best.

  • This is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaantastic! Thank you!

  • As brilliant as her more remembered performance on the show.

  • I remember seeing this number "in real time" and just being blown away by it. It was one of the the best moments of any television show, ever.

  • shes having a bodice malfuction,at least not in the magnitude of janet jackson

  • not coke, Robin was just desperate to steal some of Bette's thunder.. He's a shitbag..

  • Hey on Jay's last Tonight Show i forget who but someone did something like that number

  • Billy Crystal, I was just about to mention that. Yet another rip off on Jay's part

  • she's so funny and cute she's the best!

  • oh my word thats robin williams what a show! i love better greatest thing ever

  • It' s called love and respect. The next night she was his last guest.

  • how absolutely fantastic. I watched Johnny when the show was in NY and of course LA.

There will never be another Johnny and Bette was one of his all time favorites

I could watch these shows forever

  • If anyone still has the first cut of Do You Wanna Dance Please put it up , I Love, Love, Love the original used to stay up till 4 am to here it on WFIL am Radio when I was a teenager and NO won't tellya what year that was . Phila will always have the most choices in music Am or Fm !!! Love you Bette Hope the show in Vegas is going well.lol

  • All I did is ask if she was Jewish! Why are some of you having such a hissy fit about it? Lighten up! Would you feel the same way if I asked "Is she Lituanian"??? Jackasses!

  • LMAO I love the way she points to the audience at 4:30. SOOOOOO funny

  • Her smile at 2:05 is actually the best. So infectious. I smile everytime I watch it, although I'm already smiling. Bette's fabulous.

  • that icy glare at 1:08 is classic-LMAO

  • what a performance

  • Williams (back then) was hotter than hell...but because he's always "on", he becomes intrusive. Fortunately he knows when to stop. He could've really ruined a monumental moment.

  • Anyone have any idea why Robin Williams is on the show? Did someone think he was funny? Notice how he tries to steal Bette's limelight? Pathetic.

  • RW always does things like that. Never cared much for him myself, though he was good in Moscow on the Hudson.

  • Oh my god!! Robin Williams is coked out!! I MISS the 90s!!!

  • What a performance! Where have all the entertainers gone?

  • Jewish? Oh, you mean rich and talented? Yes, I guess she does.

But what can we expect from someone (Ezrin) whose username labels him as a protein found in the human placenta? Perhaps he was aborted and didn't know it?

  • wow that was a really stupid comment...you should know better and if you don;t, that would be sad

  • I remember that... one of the greatest moments in the history of television. I miss Johnny!

  • the Divine Miss M. !!!!

  • I too just saw Kristen Chenoweth sing to Leno. Don't get me wrong she is very talented and i love her stuff. But what a mistake to try and sing the same song to Leno as Bette did here to J.C. Not even close - and you know it was staged by the tonight show. Bette was so much more orginal in her performance. This show from start to finish with Robin & Bette. By far one of the best tonight shows of all time.

  • Just to clairify when I said - this song was staged by the tonight show, I am speaking of tonights show with KC singing it to Leno.

  • i just saw kristin chenoweth try to do this for leno. her lyrics weren't so clever.

  • WOW . two of the best ever. I realize now that there is absolutely nothing to watch on TV without JOHNNY. I could watch reruns of these shows, if they ever put them on, forever

    thanks for the memories

  • hahahha love it!!!!

  • "When I can't sleep I count your wives instead of sheep"!!! How funny and great is she. A talent that is so wonderful. I love her.

  • What is that Bette says when she says don't be cheap put the something of us to sleep at 2:00?

  • She says " Don't be cheap, put de Cordova to sleep". He was the show's producer.

  • Thank you very much.

  • this was her version of judy garland's "you made me love you" to Clark Gable on "The Broadway melody of 1938"

  • We should all say. Thanks for thr years and also the tears. So set them up Joe

  • Bette had so much love for this man, and he truly appreciated her. He was in stitches during this skit, and for good reason. Marc Shaiman worshipped Bette as a child, and how awesome it was that he spent a great part of his life working for her. Never really been a fan of Robin Williams, except for Mrs. Doubtfire. Notice how he tries to steal her spotlight at the end...one thing I don't understand about that man is that he is never trying to be himself, always acting in character.

  • Robin has bi-polar i think. It's his safety zone. I don't think he's trying to overshadow miss M... how could he possibly do that?

  • i agree with you, i think he is bi-polar as well. or some kind of mental illness. a lot of comedians have mental illnesses, their intuition into how society really works is what makes them funny and ill at the same time.

  • dont think hes trying to "steal" her moment, so much as I see him trying to "get in on it"... He's a shameless chump.

  • C'mon, guys. Who dosen't know that Robin is ridiculously over the top? Johnny certainly did, and that is why he booked him. He wanted two dynamic performers to make the whole thing less sad. I watched this when it aired, and I think it stands up as great TV.

  • She has the best smile!!

  • I just love what Bette is wearing. She looks so, so pretty. I love her. She's a Dame!

  • What an AWESOME combo Bette and Robin!!!

    Totally fun, fun, fun!!!

  • This woman is amazing. Just plain amazing. She is a true performer.

  • I completely agree x

  • This clip is living proof of the absolute genius of Bette Midler. She is truly the greatest live entertainer in the history of recorded show business - no matter what genre of music - of entertainment - there is no one greater than Bette. Period.

  • @mhertz25 If you think that she wrote the music the piano is playing, you are wrong.

  • @mhertz25 AMEN!!

  • this woman knows how to perform

  • Bettes amazing! Shes so clever :P

  • @llamalauren AMEN!!!! She is the one and only Divine Miss M!!!!!!! Brilliant!!!

  • On this night, I agree. I like him as a rule but on this night, he was overbearing and interruptive. I know this because I still have this videotape and watched it over and over. This stands alone as one of the most entertaining segments on TV ever. -except for the Robin Williams part, unfortunately.

-and I'm a Robin Williams fan.

  • This was the end of classic entertainment. It will never come back... We miss you Johnny!

  • I love this woman she is fantastic and hope 2 meet her some day!! she is such an inspiration!! there are no words 2 describe how truly fabulous she is xx

  • I could watch this over and over again. She is something else! I love her.

  • This was my favorite part of Johnny's last week! Anne

  • Thanks for posting these videos. Been looking for these for months. Awesome!

  • Only Divine Miss M. can pull something like his off :) I love it. Thank you for uploading this.
