waa waa waa stop whining you foolish hippies, how do you want to heat your homes, move your cars, and create every single plastic product you own without mining for oil? hybrid cars, solar panels and windmills can only do so much...
Stop driving cars stop walk every where, stop using power, stop heating your homes with natural gas start choping wood by hand, and stop using petroleum based products. Then you can complain about the oil and gas industry, if not then shut the front door!
Someone came from British Columbia told me that there are lots of oil wells that are capped and no company wants to use it because it would force the price of gasoline to fall below $0.50 per litre. And it would allow Canada to become independant from foreign oil. Well? Then then is no need for tar sands. Trillions of barrels yet no one want to extract that oil from the wells in Pink Mountain.
i went on a canoe trip from fort mcmurray to fort chipewyan and on the last day of paddling i stuck my hat in the Athabasca river and put it on my head to cool my self off, and when we reach fort chipewyan there were little bumps all over my forehead and my hands. can u say discusting
The oil sands are one source of heavy oil in the world. There are hundreds of others that are equally or more dirty than the Alberta oilsands. Why are you not protesting these? Likely because they are in countries that would imprison you for filming or trespassing. These OPEC nations will fill the void if the oil sands are closed down. So how is this better? It will result in zero environmental improvement, and will shift investment from north America to OPEC countries that have NO environmenta
I support rejecting tar sands oil, and am willing to bear the cost of moving off of fossil fuels. It won't be easy. We all know that. But the fear of the unknown - that world without fossil fuels, is now eclipsed by the fear of the known - certain mass extinction and climate disaster. The evidence is in. Canada, US, world....please say no. Let's fight a new fight together to solve the energy problem instead of fighting to the death over this temporary junkie fix of dirty oil from the Tar Sands.
I am a Canadian, and the Tar Sands make me ashamed. The destruction must be stopped. It is important to know that there are people from different generations who are fighting the Keystone XL. In fact, I saw the video of two young Canadian teenage boys who wanted to see the Tar Sands for themselves.
It's incredibly powerful, so much so that the Huffington Post decided to cover it! Go to their website and search for "Tar Trek."
If we stop that Tar Sand Project, Canada will not make any money, America's and China's Investment in the Tar Sand Project would cripple, and we would have to resort back to the "so called" war in the middle east. (Which we all know is a war on oil not on terrorism.)
i wonder what kind of fuel greenpeace uses ! they have boats and cars ... even their cameras are manufactured industrially so they consume oil and energy ... What would they do without oil !?? Instead of bitching they should help coming up with some alternatives
Hey, guess what? The oil sands happen naturally, yes we make co2 emissions but hey, it's our economy, I live in Edmonton, and there are a ton of refineries here, but I could care less, compare this to the bp oil leak.
@smilular A) it's not oil, it's bitumen B) land, air & water made toxic by carcinogenic particulates from industrial activity causes far more pollution than if the tarsands were left untouched by man's greed C) you must also include in your precious tarsands economy not only co2 but also arsenic, aluminum, chromium, cobalt, copper, iron, lead, phosphorous, selenium, titanium, and phenols D) cancer rates are higher in scona county near refinery row E) bp spill doesn't mitigate tarsands pollution

without tar sands canada would go bankrupt. we have enough oil in alberta alone to supply north america for over 100 years. we havent even touched saskatchewan.
who the fuck cares about the native popullation its not like we stole their land in the first place might aswell make a little money!
52 million tonnes of greenhouse gases (as stated in the video), is equivalent to about 5% of the GHG emissions of Canada, and under 0.1% or world emissions. They make it seem like this is destroying the environment when the real impact is virtually negligible on a world scale. More exaggerated inflammatory claims courtesy of greenpeace!
This is a good example of how money is always above freedom, liberty, life, health, and population welfare, including environmental health. Destruction of prosperity of the common wealth ability to survive and flourish is a form of evil worse than greed. And there are always plenty of available sheeple to do the work and bidding of their masters. The workers even die doing things for their masters, and still more people come. Fight economically. Create jobs 4 sheep.
well lets say we shut down our oil sands today. and then oil is no longer able to be produced. cars wont run, alot of products that you use everyday like plastics wont be produced(which is the main body component of your shitty priuses by the way), plastic is in almost everything. and lets see what else... oh yeah how did all those satelites get up in space that are used for reception on your beloved shitty cell phones. think of the big picture you dumb hippie fucks!
Plastic can be replaced. So can oil. There are many other opporunities for getting same energy with much less harm to the environment. If we compare the energy ratios of oil and wind power for example - the ratio of the oil is 3:1 nowadays, when the wind power's ratio is up to 30:1. Plus that, the wind doesnt stop blowing, but some day there will be no oil. The tar sands don't really do any good to the nature and even the wind turbines look prettier than those tar sand fields.

Knoc - Korean National Oil Corp

Who owns the 2nd largest oil resource in the world! Not Canadians. Who will face the environmental issues? Canadians

This is mega project is on Cree, Dene and Slavey Terrritory, to name a few Indigenous Nations effected by this project on a daily basis. Industrial Generating Companies need to regulated by the people most effected by their endless greed for control. control?!

The greatest good for the greatest number of people,This the moral justification for exploiting the tar sands. The reason the tar sands are been exploited is to due to demand for oil. If demand is not met, oil prices sky rocket. If the tar sand production was stopped in the morning. The U.S would lose 25% of its oil need. This = World economic collaspe= Wars+Food Shortages+Famine+anarchy and chaos. I would take cancer of a few, polution of local waters before the latter. Whats the Aternatives ?
DBennett, what RETARD you are! You're fabuilously funny, a REAL Al Bundy not the fiction of TV!!! You can't have a truck or a house r your hockey sticks and beer WITHOUT A SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT YOU IDIOT.
Does Greenpeace have NO money?? I NEVER see imformative video like this as an AD on TV, our MAIN media outlet! Or maybe Greenpeace is just corrupt??? The government and business IS corrupt - good night earth and earthlings.
2 things. They are OIL sands. No tar is present. 2nd, it is far different from oilfields.Oh, 3rd... it isn't global destruction, it is cleaning up the world's biggest oil spill.
@geir44 Great idea how about fucking underachieving hippies like yourself find a solution? Didn't think so much to easy to sit in your moms basement eating cheese's, Retard
i wonder if they know that by removing oil from the sands that it allows and Eco system to grow where it once couldn't sure it producing oil to burn but out of all the places in the world the effect from getting oil its the best
Fucking hypocrites... They flew here, using PETROLEUM, drove trucks that ran on PETROLEUM, their banner is made from plastic, derived from PETROEUM, and their computer that they made the banner with uses power from FOSSIL FUELS.
Fuck, these guys can't even make a balanced statement about the oilsands. At least they could RESEARCH a bit rather than bitch like a whiny little girl.
i find it ironic that in the 2 protests greenpeace did in the oil patch in canada they used gas powered trucks wore ppe made from plastic (which comes from oil) and spread out a banner also made of plastic,
and they use computers to further their message which is made of plastic and materials that are mined in open pit mines ...
i hope everyone one in this video don't drive, they best be riding a bike of walking if i see them, get a life and they should have to heat there house with wood not natural gas
I'm sick and tired of greenpeace also all of this is crap is about money. The green movement just wants its cut of the money from each drop of oil. radical environmentalists are the engine that drives the movement and in its wake are thousands off businesses devoted to "fix" the problems. You well meaning activists are free labor in a multi-billion dollar industry. Wake up
I am sick and tired of greenpeace showing all shit and nothing else. Did this film show any of the mines when they were finished topsoil replaced and trees replanted? Did it show any of the natural oil slicks that form in the Athabaska river? No. Just show any picture possible to get a reaction from someone your tactics are pathetic. Read the whole story before you make a stand. You people make a living because your wealthy parents never made you get a real job go chase some whales assholes.
stop making oil? oil is in EVERYTHING! do we find something that is like oil but different? or do without probably 90% of the things we use day to day. and its called OIL sands.
so shutting it down right now is the answer? go for it, and see what kind of mess it leaves everyone in right NOW not 20 years or more from now. i will not say the way of doing the process is great or perfect, or has no impact on the life around the sands, but i don't hear people with a list of better ways all over here. just whining and crying.
"You do what you need to do to survive in the short-term"? One of the most ignorant sentences I've read in a long time. Grow up, buddy... read some of the research, inform yourself, THEN say that. There are other short term solutions out there right now, it is our moral responsibility as humans to explore them.
You do what you need to do to survive in the short-term, this environmentalist crap is out of control. Tar sands solve the short term solution of gasoline issues,
Thank you Greenpeace! I'm tired of the Canadian media defending the tar sands, and shunning environmental standards of other countries. I know that the oil produces tons of jobs. But the environmentle damage is unforgivable! I don't even give a fuck that my cousin has a job there. I want to end this embarresment to Canada.
You are very ill informed my friend. I don't want to sound condescending but I recommend that you do a little research on oil sands.
They had to destroy ecosystems that can never be replaced to build the infrastructure for obtaining the oil. Then they dump all of their crap on the ecosystems around it. It poisons the water and kills native Canadians.
Also, the oil isn't purified until after it comes out of the earth. So you're letting the eco system grow argument doesn't hold water.
So your telling me that when the oil was naturally only a few feet from the surface it did no harm, but as so as an operation moves in to clean this natural spill up that it becomes toxic? You must be a hippie. Oh and by the way you nice little city that you live in was built on an nice little eco system of itself, no god didnt build it on his 7th day. So when you moving to that cave????????
Yes when the oil was in the ground it did no harm. To get at the oil you have to remove all of the trees and brush, then the top soil and clay are removed to expose the oil sand. The land is completely destroyed in this process. Personally I'm more concerned about the global impact of the CO2, I was simply disproving hbkfitz's point.
Natural spill? There is no 'spill.' Just mining.
I know, I live in the suburbs. Not by choice, I'm 17. But it's not like they're building homes on top of the oil.
I'm not suggesting that we move into caves. But I think that people could be way more conservative about how they lived. There is no way that my parents and I need 2400 sq feet but they bought this house anyways. If everybody lived in apartments the world would be a better place. People would be closer together and could support more business and services within a confined area. Thanks for reading :)
@markajaw So are you suggesting that the oil sands do the same thing that big cities do? Toronto wasts 3 TRILLION bbls of water each year. They rip up pristine land and bull dose Bambie's favorite forest to build a shopping mall. Cities dump more raw chemicals into fresh water every year than the oil sands ever will.
But cock sucking tree huggers like yourself fail to protest the end of this travesty. But its different when YOU are responsible for this climate crime right? Fuck you cock sucker
@blambo35 I realize that Toronto uses a lot of water and other resources. What I am saying is that the more densely we populate the less damage we do per person. What I protest is exactly what you are describing. Urban sprawl, and the need for everybody to have a massive house is stupid.
All I am saying is that the Canadian government should be investing in alternative energy sources. We hand out billions in tax cuts for oil companies and only a few million to alternatives.
@markajaw Hmm so more densely populated the less pollution right? so Montreal's 3.4 BILLION liters of raw sewage a day is les per person? Or the massive amounts of energy to cool cities malls is efficient use of energy not to mention cock suckers condo units? Or the fact that The city of say Toronto has devastated more land than all of the oil sands, whats the difference between a concrete slap and a hole? Fuck you still don't get it, you cant pick your battles you must be against them all
Another beautiful country destroyed by greeding corporations, greedy people and greedy government. But it for the good of the economy they say. When will economists learn how to subtract. This is Canada's wealth and future they are trading for higher profits and economic growth today. What's worse unemployment or death of you and your family/community?
It's easy to say the oilsands should be stopped, but what this issue really comes down to is whether people are willing to sacrifice their standard of living to be more sustainable. Renewable forms of energy as technology stands today are all still very expensive, so unless the average person is willing to take a huge drop in wealth, the oilsands are one of the ways our society can continue to enjoy all of our cheap goods.
Yes that's true, cheap goods today for the price of our future though. To me it's utter stupidity, not to mention just plain wrong to value money over the health of the very environment that sustains us. Over consumtion isn't personal wealth, it's personal and social destruction. And I'm sorry cheap goods is exactly why people over consume in the first place, so yes the oil sands should be stopped. And renewable energy is not as expensive as you might think. If there is a will there is a way.
I know money runs the world, but I also see it as one of the oldest forms of corruption in this world that causes massive destruction like war and poverty. What's the point of that house or truck when the air, water and land are to toxic to live on? Maybe people should live a little more modestly and stop over consuming. It sounds like you have already given up or given in to the paradigm that you can buy happiness. Afterall it's thinking like that is destroying our world.
Wow so much anger and for what? And your intellectual prowess astounds me as you made absolutely no point other than forming some baseless opiniated insult around a comment not even directed to you. You keep living in your little bubble and leave the thinking to someone else or you can try and have a real debate of the issue at hand. Have a nice day. ; )

Whats the Aternatives ?
boscoesarmy 2 years ago
Well our 'healthy economy' is based on:
Wars
Food Shortages
Famine
anarchy
chaos
In every non-western country in the world. I'm sure you'd have a different argument if you were the one with cancer and polluted water.
The healthy economy is due to its exploitation of resources, if you include other human beings as resources.

2 things. They are OIL sands. No tar is present. 2nd, it is far different from oilfields.Oh, 3rd... it isn't global destruction, it is cleaning up the world's biggest oil spill.

i wonder if they know that by removing oil from the sands that it allows and Eco system to grow where it once couldn't sure it producing oil to burn but out of all the places in the world the effect from getting oil its the best

FoamPackingPeanuts 2 years ago
i find it ironic that in the 2 protests greenpeace did in the oil patch in canada they used gas powered trucks wore ppe made from plastic (which comes from oil) and spread out a banner also made of plastic,
and they use computers to further their message which is made of plastic and materials that are mined in open pit mines ...
can you say hypocracy?

I'm sick and tired of greenpeace also all of this is crap is about money. The green movement just wants its cut of the money from each drop of oil. radical environmentalists are the engine that drives the movement and in its wake are thousands off businesses devoted to "fix" the problems. You well meaning activists are free labor in a multi-billion dollar industry. Wake up
mxer09 2 years ago
I am sick and tired of greenpeace showing all shit and nothing else. Did this film show any of the mines when they were finished topsoil replaced and trees replanted? Did it show any of the natural oil slicks that form in the Athabaska river? No. Just show any picture possible to get a reaction from someone your tactics are pathetic. Read the whole story before you make a stand. You people make a living because your wealthy parents never made you get a real job go chase some whales assholes.
whitemaninharlem 2 years ago
there are sooooo many sustainable solutions available to us that it pathetic to keep depending on oil for everything.
ewtubewashed 2 years ago
stop making oil? oil is in EVERYTHING! do we find something that is like oil but different? or do without probably 90% of the things we use day to day. and its called OIL sands.
hencan99 2 years ago
I don't quite get your point... problem here is how they get oil out and its environmental impact on this particular matter, no?
thetvshooter 2 years ago
so shutting it down right now is the answer? go for it, and see what kind of mess it leaves everyone in right NOW not 20 years or more from now. i will not say the way of doing the process is great or perfect, or has no impact on the life around the sands, but i don't hear people with a list of better ways all over here. just whining and crying.

"You do what you need to do to survive in the short-term"? One of the most ignorant sentences I've read in a long time. Grow up, buddy... read some of the research, inform yourself, THEN say that. There are other short term solutions out there right now, it is our moral responsibility as humans to explore them.
jaimsk 2 years ago
You do what you need to do to survive in the short-term, this environmentalist crap is out of control. Tar sands solve the short term solution of gasoline issues,

Thank you Greenpeace! I'm tired of the Canadian media defending the tar sands, and shunning environmental standards of other countries. I know that the oil produces tons of jobs. But the environmentle damage is unforgivable! I don't even give a fuck that my cousin has a job there. I want to end this embarresment to Canada.
markajaw 2 years ago
yeah its also so bad that by getting rid of the oil in the sand they're letting and Eco system grow where it once couldn't
hbkfitz 2 years ago
You are very ill informed my friend. I don't want to sound condescending but I recommend that you do a little research on oil sands.
They had to destroy ecosystems that can never be replaced to build the infrastructure for obtaining the oil. Then they dump all of their crap on the ecosystems around it. It poisons the water and kills native Canadians.
Also, the oil isn't purified until after it comes out of the earth. So you're letting the eco system grow argument doesn't hold water.
markajaw 2 years ago 2
So your telling me that when the oil was naturally only a few feet from the surface it did no harm, but as so as an operation moves in to clean this natural spill up that it becomes toxic? You must be a hippie. Oh and by the way you nice little city that you live in was built on an nice little eco system of itself, no god didnt build it on his 7th day. So when you moving to that cave????????
blambo35 2 years ago
Yes when the oil was in the ground it did no harm. To get at the oil you have to remove all of the trees and brush, then the top soil and clay are removed to expose the oil sand. The land is completely destroyed in this process. Personally I'm more concerned about the global impact of the CO2, I was simply disproving hbkfitz's point.
Natural spill? There is no 'spill.' Just mining.
I know, I live in the suburbs. Not by choice, I'm 17. But it's not like they're building homes on top of the oil.
markajaw 2 years ago
I'm not suggesting that we move into caves. But I think that people could be way more conservative about how they lived. There is no way that my parents and I need 2400 sq feet but they bought this house anyways. If everybody lived in apartments the world would be a better place. People would be closer together and could support more business and services within a confined area. Thanks for reading :)
markajaw 2 years ago
@markajaw So are you suggesting that the oil sands do the same thing that big cities do? Toronto wasts 3 TRILLION bbls of water each year. They rip up pristine land and bull dose Bambie's favorite forest to build a shopping mall. Cities dump more raw chemicals into fresh water every year than the oil sands ever will.
But cock sucking tree huggers like yourself fail to protest the end of this travesty. But its different when YOU are responsible for this climate crime right? Fuck you cock sucker
blambo35 1 year ago
@blambo35 I realize that Toronto uses a lot of water and other resources. What I am saying is that the more densely we populate the less damage we do per person. What I protest is exactly what you are describing. Urban sprawl, and the need for everybody to have a massive house is stupid.
All I am saying is that the Canadian government should be investing in alternative energy sources. We hand out billions in tax cuts for oil companies and only a few million to alternatives.
markajaw 1 year ago
@markajaw Hmm so more densely populated the less pollution right? so Montreal's 3.4 BILLION liters of raw sewage a day is les per person? Or the massive amounts of energy to cool cities malls is efficient use of energy not to mention cock suckers condo units? Or the fact that The city of say Toronto has devastated more land than all of the oil sands, whats the difference between a concrete slap and a hole? Fuck you still don't get it, you cant pick your battles you must be against them all
blambo35 1 year ago 4
@blambo35 Yes more densely populated = less pollution. Nobody is arguing for living in caves.
markajaw 1 year ago
Another beautiful country destroyed by greeding corporations, greedy people and greedy government. But it for the good of the economy they say. When will economists learn how to subtract. This is Canada's wealth and future they are trading for higher profits and economic growth today. What's worse unemployment or death of you and your family/community?
ChoasTheory2000 2 years ago
It's easy to say the oilsands should be stopped, but what this issue really comes down to is whether people are willing to sacrifice their standard of living to be more sustainable. Renewable forms of energy as technology stands today are all still very expensive, so unless the average person is willing to take a huge drop in wealth, the oilsands are one of the ways our society can continue to enjoy all of our cheap goods.
edmoil12 2 years ago
Yes that's true, cheap goods today for the price of our future though. To me it's utter stupidity, not to mention just plain wrong to value money over the health of the very environment that sustains us. Over consumtion isn't personal wealth, it's personal and social destruction. And I'm sorry cheap goods is exactly why people over consume in the first place, so yes the oil sands should be stopped. And renewable energy is not as expensive as you might think. If there is a will there is a way.
ChoasTheory2000 2 years ago
When was the last time a picturesque landscape bought you a 400,000$ house and a 50,000$ truck?
Once you learn that the whole world runs on money you will be better off.
dbennett4 2 years ago
I know money runs the world, but I also see it as one of the oldest forms of corruption in this world that causes massive destruction like war and poverty. What's the point of that house or truck when the air, water and land are to toxic to live on? Maybe people should live a little more modestly and stop over consuming. It sounds like you have already given up or given in to the paradigm that you can buy happiness. Afterall it's thinking like that is destroying our world.
ChoasTheory2000 2 years ago
You can live in a cave and eat grass you fucking hippie communist retard. Stop smoking pot for a second and pull your head outa your ass

Wow so much anger and for what? And your intellectual prowess astounds me as you made absolutely no point other than forming some baseless opiniated insult around a comment not even directed to you.
