People had been leaving Detroit for a few years before the riots because of more modern homes being built in the suburbs and less crime (crime was not out of control then,but its the big city). The 60's were a time of social unrest and people trying to gain civil rights this helped fuel the riots which destroyed many homes and businesses. This led to more white flight. in 1972 Coleman Young was elected mayor in a very close election at this time the city

The Mounted Police Station on Beaubien was under siege for ~ 2-days.

Death toll was probably more than 43. If you knew your history you would know that unscrupulous white business owners burned their own businesses down to collect insurance money. This was not a one sided race riot.
