We need some more modest geniuses like Elliott Smith, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley and Ian Kurtis, music just isn't the same anymore, the ones with true ability and passion are left in the dark so that the mainstream can shine the spotlight on obnoxious, ignorant, talentless fucking turds such as Katy(the trashy whore)Perry, Lady(fucked up)Gaga, Chris(the moronic woman abuser)Brown, My Chemical Gaymance, Thirty Seconds To Become Fuckwits, Goyte(the pompous jackass), ETC, ETC, ETC
He was one of the best acoustic guitarists of the past 25 years at least. He doesn't even have to look at the chords. Simply puts other artists to shame in my opinion.
Ah music nazis who look at people like Elliott and go "he's so great because he's not like Lady Gaga". She's not so bad, and not being her does not automatically make him good. What makes him good is that he is one of the finest melodists I've ever heard in my life, a wonderful lyricist and brilliant songwriter. Sublime.
@yougooddog i was just thinking about that before i read ur post i mean if u dont like it move on but how can anyone really dislike this song so much as to mark it as such is not human i really would like to see to see them and see what they actually like i bet its some lame ass shit like el de barge
It is harder to find artists these days who do not play or sing their songs off of the rails. Elliott Smith was so talented and true to his music, style of playing and overall sense of musicality. He knew the listener would be thoughtful and smart. Not one who needed to be force-fed and led around by a series of high flung and overwrought pseudo-musical gymnastics, similar to lady gaga or beyonce.
But then would he have been the same modest genius we love and appreciate? The greatest souls this world has known rarely recognize their own power over others. That is, in a large way, what makes them incredible, and all the more admirable.
If Elliott boasted about his success and his ability, he would have become arrogant, pig headed and self-absorbed like so many musicians today that make one small hit and think they're the new king of music.
Well if he did see himself as someone who had talent and a person who touched others with his music than maybe he would of saw some light in the dark world he viewed himself to live in; if that were to happen maybe he wouldn't have killed himself, maybe he could have realized that he meant a great deal to so many people because of this talent he possessed.
as far as guitar playing goes, eliott smith carved out a niche that has been barely recognized. a whispering niche with overlapping guitar sounds that shall remain just that in the mainstream... a whisper. lovely man i wont say good innovative music died with him, but not much has happened since. rest his beautiful soul
I would hardly call Elliott Smith an "underrated guitar player", I think it's generally accepted that he was an awesome multi-instrumentalist, let alone guitar player.
Beautiful and true in equal measures!!Thanks for uploading this :) I've just uploaded a really ES-inspired song called Happy Again, would be great to hear what you think..xo
Keep in mind his fingers look a hell of a lot faster than they really are due to loosely strumming with all his fingers. Of course there's some picking involved in the strumming which adds so much to the guitar work in this, but just thought I'd point that out :] And ultimate-guitar has a spot on tab btw.
@moree21 "well, ya thanks for coming. its not bad" and then he says something I can understand and the n a girl says "I can see you elliott" and he replies "I can see you too"
@tkd4life6406 He tunes down a whole step (2 frets) and puts his capo on 7. You can just put it on 5 if you want. He typically keeps his guitar tuned down, since it's easier than tuning down and then back up for specific songs. A lot of his songs are a full step flat, such as Waltz#2, Biggest Lie, Southern belle etc...And on songs that are standard, he typically puts a capo on 2, and for angeles, he puts it on 7..
I was really shocked when I heard this on "The Girl Next Door" the other day. That's the last movie I thought would have one of Elliott's songs in it, haha.
I was just reflecting how Elliott caused happiness when he as alive, as well as after he died. I put 'however he died' because to me it doesn't matter if he was killed, or killed himself; he is gone and either way I cherish what is.
To prevent that any lazy douche bag could cover this song :-) No serious, he was amazing at songwriting and guitar playing. His riffs are truly original and make 99% of all other songs ever written sound like pieces of amateurish laziness.
You don't have to get mad because I called you out. But really, I didn't come here to fight with some kid I don't even know. I deleted my comments to advoid looking like a "fucktard" to anyone else. Sorry you take the internet so seriuosly.

Haha this song is great, but let me tell you there are a lot of things that will remind you of the girl you like... it's just the way your brain works =)
Look at him on this stage, just simple one microphone and one guitar, everything looks so easy, but he did an amazing result!! how come? I guess it's called "Talented".
i remember how i found out about him i accidentally bought this song on itunes and i listened to it and i couldnt stop i was literally sitting there for ours and its such a shame he had to go so soon
That's how I found out about Elliot as well. I was searching for a song on Limewire and Twilight came up. I downloaded it because I clicked it by accident. When I listened to it after I had downloaded it, I was pleasantly surprised.
I remember him playing at Under Acme in NY...the audience, like most in NY, too cool to listen. Cell phones beeping everywhere. People laughing and yelling at each other in lieu of conversation. Suddenly, he stops in the middle of the third song, and says, "Anyone who cares, I'll play for you out back." And he did, all four of us. Our own private concert. One of the greatest nights in my life. RIP Elliott. I miss you a lot.

love seeing him connect with the crowd like that. such a brilliant mind captivated by sheets and dark thoughts but such a beauty behind it all. amazing.
