  • Finally a decent demo of the Mini KP! thanks man

  • @Seagerash

Cheers! Glad I was of help!

  • hey man does the mini kp have a beat roll effect like the one on pioner's djm series or like on traktor???

  • @poppinkino

Hi, as far as I can tell there isn't really an effect on the MiniKP that works like that.

  • Also, this is the best mini kp vid i've found so far

  • can the mini kp sample/sequence stuff? i.e. create loops from your source audio the way i understand the real deal kaoss pad to be able to?

  • @Zedzilla

    Thanks for your comment!

The MiniKP CAN sample, but not as powerfully as the Kaoss Pad.

The MiniKP samples 4 continuous beats. You can manipulate that loop based on 10 presets. But you can't record a new loop without destroying the first, ie there is only one bank of audio.

So you can do much less with the miniKP compared to the actual kaoss pad.

  • I came here to see if it had a certain effect I wanted (I thought it was grain shifter, but it turned out to be vinyl looper), but I also ended up learning a lot about how some effects are made. Great video.

  • @Maduc

    Thank you very much!

  • This was helpful, thanks man!

  • @VonCarnstein

Cheers! Glad I could be a help

  • Really informative video - thanks man!

  • @anguaji

Thanks for your comment! I'm glad I could be of help!

  • This is a great help to understanding the mini's potential. Ta

  • @Robosardine

Thank you very much! I'm glad I could be helpful =)

  • i am looking to get in to audio editing and creating techno like stuff. this looks like something that could be fun and easy to use what other things would i need to get if i wanted to get a mini Kp like yours.

ps i have a macbook in case that makes a difference

  • @cdgator1

Hi! Now bear in mind that the miniKP only has effects - You still need a source of audio for the miniKP to apply effects to.

If you are into composition, it's more important to have a good suite of programs on your computer first.

If you don't want to pay for any software, I recommend LMMS (google it, "Linux Multimedia System", and don't worry it runs on more than Linux). LMMS will let you compose your own tracks.

    (cont'd)

  • If you want to use a miniKP, you'll need to be able to re-record whatever you've done, so you may want to look at programs like Audacity.

Honestly though, the miniKP is more for live performance than anything - When I create "studio" tracks I don't usually use my miniKP, because then there's the hassle of having to record off the miniKP - And the resulting recording isn't as easy to edit as it is in LMMS.

That's just a thought though, maybe it'd be different for you! Have fun with audio =)

  • i was after the kp3 but then i realized is twice as expensive just for a sampler with 4pads wich i find pathethic. the programs in the mini kp are the same as the kp3? memory programs erase when power off ? does it come with a card like kaossilator? and the last question is kinda (even more) silly : is it suitable to be touched with your toe?(for efxing an electric violin)

  • @xbuster17

KP3 has its advantages. While I don't own one, I can tell you its ability to load samples externally gives it a great advantage.

There are less effects in the MiniKP than the KP3. If I recall correctly, KP3 has 128 - So miniKP has 28 less.

Memory programs on the miniKP do not erase themselves even if you remove the battery.

It does not come with a card.

It's not gonna be easy to rotate the jog dial or tap BPM with your toe. It may work out with practise though.

  • great vid, i am deinitley getting one off ebay. 5/5

what lead would you use to connect one of these to an ipod?

  • @tomsennitt

Cheers! You made a good choice.

The lead you'd need is an RCA to 3.5mm cable. If you need more details, feel free to check out my video response to this video, which explains this in greater detail.

  • круть!

  • Hi! The Noise synth you demo @ 4:21 is delayed. Why is that? Can you chain effects like that, or is just the synth sounds delayed?

Thank you so much for the demo!

  • Hi! Thanks for commenting!

The noise synth program is delayed by default. Unfortunately you cannot chain effects.

  • Alright. But are all the synth presets delay? And if so, does the delay speed change with the tempo?

  • Good point! I don't have my batteries charged right now so I can't try out for myself, but if I remember correctly, they all have a delay. I'm not too sure about this so don't take my word for it entirely.

And yes, delay speed changes with tempo.

  • Alright. But the delay is bypassable, right?

  • I'm afraid not. There seems to be no way to switch off the delay.

  • What r using as the carrier?? And how do u have it hooked up? Through a mixer or directly into the mini mp..

  • I'm sorry but I don't understand you, what is "the carrier"?

And the music source in this case is the computer. The audio comes out of the computer, into the MiniKP (where the effects were done), and then back into the computer where it is recorded.

  • quick question, i have a windows vista computer and just woundering (i am a noob) will it work on my computer or do i need a program or a special computer to use it

  • Don't call yourself a noob, everyone starts somewhere! =)

Actually the miniKP doesn't even need a computer to operate! All you need is music to be sent into the unit. It will then send the effected music out of the unit. You'll have to plug it in to speakers or earphones to hear the sound.

For me, I am only using the computer to play music and to record the final effected music, that's all. It's not actually necessary for the miniKP to work.

  • thanks alot iv got a few more questions like say i had a song on WMP or iTunes i wanted to mess atound with, could i just plug it in and just play from there?

  • Yes, you can!

All you have to do is to connect your computer to your miniKP with a cable that plugs into the earphones jack on your computer.

Then all you have to do is to play the track on your computer, and you're all ready to manipulate the music with the miniKP!

  • AWESOME!!!! and are all the waires etc provided with the mini KP? cos if so then im totally sold!

  • Unfortunately not. You'll have to buy the cables from stores yourself.

  • damn :/ one last question then what cables do i need xD

  • That depends on what other equipment your MiniKP will be working with.

If you're going to go from your computer to the miniKP, you'll need a 3.5mm to RCA connector - That is, a normal earphones jack on one end, and red and white connectors on the other end.

If you're not going to send the output to amplifiers, then that's all you need. You can plug earphones right into the MiniKP, so no trouble there.

  • thats cool imma just mess around with some songs on my computer :) and is there a specific name for the red and white wies so i can just go on amazon and just buy em all from there (: and i dnt get the wrong ones, btw thanks alot for the help and tolerating my questiosn (: (: i owe u one lol like make a tribute vid for u xD wen i get one :P

  • Cheers!

The red and white one is called RCA. So if you wanna look up you can try something like RCA to 3.5mm cable, or something along those lines.

Actually I've just made a video about the cables. If you can hold off buying the stuffs for a couple of days, my new vid will make it clear (i hope! xD)

  • many thanks its gna take me a few weeks to save up for it but yh i can wait for ur vid :) many thanks!!!!

  • Cheers! I'm glad I could be helpful =)

  • btw, how many effects exactly are there?

  • There are 100 effect programs.

This doesn't equate to 100 unique effects, though, since some of these programs are the same effect but they have some setting differences.

  • cool :D now ur prolly thinking im an anoyiing lil guy asking all these questions etc :P but i only have 1 more left, thats rigfht 1 :P so say i put on a track thas 2:34 minutes long and i use the effect that u use (on ur vid on 3:46 the 'vinyl looper' ) will it do the same like kinda slow down the song etc or do i need the Kaossilator to do the effects like that

  • I enjoy answering your questions =)

The miniKP will be able to do that effect. Basically you can sample any sound at all with the vinyl looper and as you pull your finger down on the right side, you will slow down the music.

Of course, bear in mind that the looper will only sample four beats and loop that over and over, so the length of your original track actually doesn't matter.

  • thanks alot dude, uv answered som many questions for me thanks for being so tolerant :)

  • Cheers! I enjoy answering your questions =)

  • one more question :P hehe whats the battery life like and can i use my psp charger or anything like that to charge it

  • The miniKP works on AA batteries. Technically any AA batteries will work in it.

Unless you buy rechargable AAs, there is no recharging involved at all.

  • I don't understand what you mean about buying rechargeable AAs. You can't use them with the pad?

  • Yes you can. That's my setup. I have four rechargable AA batteries for use with the MiniKP.

What makes you think you can't use them?

  • ive been trying to get an answer to this everywhere:S can you loop somthing, then add an effect like a grain shifter to the loop?

  • Unfortunately the answer to your much-asked question is no - The miniKP is limited in the sense that it can only run one effect program at a time.

However, some of the loop programs actually feature a combination with another effect. For example, program 82 is a combination of looper & flanger. Similarly 84 is looper & decimator.

This means that, if you want to combine an effect with loop, you're out of luck unless it is supported by a loop program. There is no Loop & Grain Shift program.

  • hey man, is it possible to create samples from an external audio source and then loop them? i'm asking you because this would be the feature i'm looking for.

  • Yes, that is possible, though the control you have over the sampled sound is limited.

Depending on your BPM setting, the MiniKP will allow you to sample up to 4 bars (or less) of input audio. Once sampled, the sample would loop continuously until you lift your finger (or disengage the hold function).

You can then apply various effects to these samples, or shorten the loop.

This is what I'm doing with effects 78 and 79 in the video.

    Cheers

  • I wonder if you could help me. I'm not too interested with the 'beats'/DJ style use of the KP, but I am interested to know if it can be used as a guitar effects controller (in sort of the same way Matt Bellamy uses it). Is it possible to use these effects on a guitar input signal, or is it pretty much limited to a DJ sort of thing?

Good video, btw, help understand the machine.

  • Bearing in mind I'm not a guitarist, but there seems to have been quite a few people out there who've done it, so why not? =)

At the same time, I guess it's not very suited for guitar effects since it uses a touchpad.

  • i have a question. i want to know if i can use the mini-kp to reproduce the sound of a rotary speaker,(flanger effects always sound a lot like them), that's because i have a cheap keyboard and i want to expand my sound without having to buy a more serious keyboard.i'm sure this thing will definitely help me to get really cool sounds, but my question in other words is, there's an option to control the flanger's speed?(like an auto-flanger in which you control the speed with the touch pad?)

  • Since I am not familiar with the rotary speaker effect, I can only speak of the flanger effect (hopefully they are alike enough!)

And the answer is Yes. Program #35 for instance, is an auto-flanger, where the flanger sound is changed by the unit. You set the speed by touching different horizontal locations on the touchpad.

  • thanks dude... i was going to buy it anyway... now i know i can't go wrong with this thing.

I can even save the rest of my money for a new guitar!..

  • is that noise synth with delay ?

  • Yes, the noise synth has a delay. As far as I know it cannot be set, which is unfortunate as there are times where the delay is kinda irritating.

  • and this miniKP has a Manual Phaser ...that means you must touch with finger to change depth or range...my question is if there is phaser that is phasing without touching :)

Sorry for my english . Hope you understand my question.

  • Yes, you can keep the phaser on without having to touch the touchpad. Do so by using the "hold" feature.

In this mode, the MiniKP will remember the last position you touched, and the unit will function as though you are still touching in that position, even after you lift your finger.

However, in this case, you will not hear the sweeping sound of the phaser. For that you can use the auto-phase function (effect 41) with the hold function.

  • ok , thanks ! you helped me a lot :)

  • You're welcome! I'm glad I was of help! =)

  • issn the kaossilator batter

  • You really couldn't compare like that - The MiniKP is an effects unit (modifies music), while the Kaossilator is a synthesizer (makes music): They're so different that there's no way to say which one is better.

It all boils down to what you intend to do with them. As for me, I love em' both.

  • i have to admit, that i'm also trying to figure out if i buy it or not. after seeing that video i defenetly want to have one too.

  • Thank you very much for your comment!

Yes - the MiniKP is a piece of gear that's really worth the money spent - You made a wise choice! =)

  • I've been watching videos trying to figure out whether I want one of these or not.... I gotta say I'm getting there because of this video :D

  • Thank you!

Indeed, the MiniKP is an amazing effects unit packed into an extremely portable form factor.

If you want an effects unit, and don't wish to pay for something larger like the KP3, or you want portability, this is definitely the unit to get!

  • Well, what I'm concerned about is whether or not it'll sound good with a guitar.

  • A guitar? The thing is, the MiniKP is not really meant to be a guitar effects unit. It's more for DJs to manipulate their music.

  • Oh, I know. But I've seen some videos of 'em being used with the guitar and it seems to work pretty well.

  • Oh, that's cool! Sadly I'm not a guitarist, and don't own a guitar, so I'm afraid I wouldn't be of much help there. I'm sure you'd be able to judge by looking around for vids =)

Hope you get it! It's a great effects unit no matter what.

  • i orgasmed at the grain shifter.

  • i'm very curious about the Vinyl Looper; If you samle 4 beats at 120bpm (a 2 second sound), if you slow it down (forward or backward), does it play the full sample, but slower (taking longer)? or does it only play a beat/time fixed window?

  • You have raised a very good point.

Whatever you've sampled gets played back in its entirety when you change speed. This means that the two-second sample in your example will be "stretched" to fill a longer period of, say, three seconds.

So yes, it plays the entire sample.

Once again, very good question. Thanks for the comment!

  • does this have any effects that the kp3 doesn't have?

  • Sorry, I can't give you a definite answer since I don't own a KP3. I could have looked it up, but Korg's site doesn't seem to be working very well, and the KP3 manual doesn't list the programs either.

But if you ask me, I don't think the miniKP has effects that the KP3 doesn't.

    Thanks for commenting.

  • it has 100 of the kp3's effects

  • Do these have mic inputs?

  • Nope, I'm afraid not. These only take one set of RCA inputs. If you want to hook up a mic, you need to somehow convert the mic to output to RCA before it will work.

  • KP2's do though, right?

  • Yep. Both the KP2 and KP3 have mic inputs. (bearing in mind I don't own any of these)

  • Awesome, thanks mate.

Don't worry I'm judging by videos anyway lmao

  • Bloody good!! Is the korg kaossilator any good. I wanna get one, a breif overview of the 2 would be legendary!

  • Thanks! Until I have the time to do another video, I'm afraid I wouldn't be of much help there.

But basically, the kaossilator is a synthesizer, which produces music as you touch the touchpad. It's great because it has many features that allows you to basically come up with a full 'song' through just one unit.

The Kaossilator is a different thing from the miniKP. The miniKP is an effects unit, which modifies incoming sound.

  • these Mini-KP's are really sweet! i've just been hooked on watching videos about them for like 3 days now. i am definitely asking for one for Christmas! :D

  • Me too :D

  • hey do the main necessities come in the box

like a way to plug your ipod into it and stuff if possible could you make a tutorial on how to set everything up i know its asking for a bit much but i would be very thankful if you did

  • Good idea for a video. I'll consider doing it. But right now, let me answer your questions here first:

You can plug your iPod (or any other music source) into the miniKP via the RCA connectors at the back using a cable which is (sadly) not provided in the box.

Basically, all there is in the box is the manual, some bubble wrap, the unit itself, and batteries.

  • thank you for replying now i know

also i forgot to say earlier nice video

  • This is so far the best Mini-KP video I've come across on YouTube. Thanks for making it.

  • Wow! Thank you very much for that! I'm really very honoured.

  • Oh holy shit...I have yet to see anyone use the Vinyl Looper ANYWHERE, that just made me happy in the pants.

  • lolz lolz! Glad you liked it!
