dog engagement uses 4 or 6 large teeth to engage each gear - very positive and strong engagement - if used in sequential box can do clutchless changes
synchro engagement uses many smaller teeth to help the gear to engage smoothly and normally quietly
straight cut gears normally used in motorsport and bikes very strong but they do whine
helical cut gears in most standard boxes and are quiet
most road cars have helical gears and synchro engagement for smooth and quiet running
@fazermanic600 this man speaks the truth. i have ppg gears in my subaru wrx and 1-2 is straight cut and 3-4 is helical, 1-2 whines loud 3-4 is not loud but still whines a good bit and i left 5 stock for a cruising gear. i love the sound!
Do they shift quicker and smoother with a more positive engagement? I know that straight cut boxes whine and can handle more power but never really heard of dog box.
@workshop77777 the top comment right above your dumbass points out that a dog box does not have anything to do with gear cut. Straight cut gears can be in a full syncromesh trans or a dog box like this one. Your dumber than the guy your 'trying' to correct because the correct information is staring you in the face!
@workshop7777 heaps of people do. Not everyone wants to drive around on the street with a transmission screaming in your ear non stop. This car is a perfect example. Sounds normal, super strong, and still with dog engagement. Couldnt think of a better setup for a manual street car.
full on confused about dog box geras i thought they were the ones were you shift up every time to go up and down to go down? which gearboxes are them then ?
@jackojeff umm I think all gears shift up to go up and down to go down lol.
but i think ur talking about a sequential transmission which is a type of tranny where you can't skip gears, must go in the order of 1-2-3-4-5-6-5-4-3-2-1.
dogbox refers to the actual gears themselves rather to the entire transmission, therefore you can have a sequential dogbox tranny
but getting to the point, dogbox just refers to straight cut gears, which handles a lot more power and faster shifts due to no synchros
@xxnissansilviaxx It HAS a clutch of course... you just don't have to use it when racing. The tranny doesn't have synchro's in it. Tranny is nothing but a group of different sized gears inside so they spin at different speeds because of the size difference. Synchro's match up gears speeds so you can switch from one to the next smoothly. Dogbox tranny's have to be double clutched to match gear speed or "banged" violently once the car hits its rev limiter... they're made to take tons of power.
@xASSASSINCE5x Look it up, been around for a long long time. Transmission has no synchro's in it so you don't "have" to use the clutch to shift gears. They are very expensive (mine was about "6500) but decrease lag significantly. WOT clutchless shifting FTW.
@Downcut ahh ok i m sorry but i thought that: no syncro=straight cut anyway. so exist gears without syncro but with bent cuts.. i haven't knew about it :)
@Downcut Yes.. I'm aware.. but why in the world would you not put straight cut gears in a dogbox? I'm HOPING they're at least aftermarket helical cut but even still... if you make any power... straight cut is stronger and the way to go. And it sounds so sexy.
@japslapr Of course they are, it's an aftermarket gear set in a factory gearbox. :)
My gear set is rated to 1000hp, over rated for my 700hp car and costs a few grand more. Also for a street car the whine gets annoying on long drives, it's great for the first month though...
@Downcut Thats why my dogbox has a stock fifth gear. No whine on long drives (assuming your on the highway in 5th of course). It has custom gearing to make sure the car traps in 4th so the fragile 5th gear is just a cruising gear. Mine is rated to 1000awhp as well and I sit well below that. Question tho... I had an issue with the rods holding the shift forks. You ever have this issue? First time at the track I snapped the rod holding the 1-2 shift fork the second a grabbed second on high boost.
@japslapr PPG only offer straight cut 5 speed or helical 4 speed, so I took the helical for that reason, I keep the standard 5th. And I'm trapping at 8500rpm in 4th now so it might be time for taller ratio's. No issues whatsoever man except for me missing 3rd for 1st at 8000rpm in 2nd. Diff boom.
@Downcut Lmao...dude, I did the same damn thing. For some reason people seem to think that these cars are easy to drive and that is NOT the case. It takes quite a bit of practice. I went from first, to second, back into 1st while WOT/clutchless shifting and revved the motor up to 10k rpm. Insert valve float and bent every valve in the heads. The shock from the pistons smacking valves spun a rod bearing so I had to pull and rebuild a $10k motor after only 1500 miles(1k of that being break in). :(
@Downcut PPG assembled my tranny with a few of their parts (speedo gear, billet shift forks, etc...) but the gearset was actually made by PAR. Aussie based company.
Damn...are you really tall? How can you drive with your knees in that position> The wheel is actually rubbing on your legs! You need a longer steering column.
Saw you at Powercruise on Saturday Paul. Awesome sounding SR. Best ive heard, and just sounded like it had balls. Read all about it in PI, but had no idea how it went. Saw problems though early in the morning. Easy fixed? Lol, i'll definately come pleading for a shotgun ride next time.
Thanks mate, yeah it always manages to make people smile :). I had a couple of issues actually, snapped a throttle body shaft and had a bad earth to the crank angle sensor. Sorted it for Sunday though and put some big cars in their places! 3rd in the drags and a nice skid which I have posted up here too.
Well I'll be there next year because that was the best even I've ever been to, come and say hi. Cheers.
Dog engagement = internal gear selection, sequential = external gear selection (straight up, straight down) so put the two together and you have a sequential dog box. You can also have a sequential shifter on a synchro box.
You can put a sequential shifter on a synchro box but it wil never shift as fast as dog engagement. Look up Ikeya Formula squential shifter and you'll see what I mean, then check out the way a rally car shifts ;)
As citydriver said, you need to back off the gas slightly to take the load off the dogs in order to pull the next gear. Look closely at my right leg just before I shift...
@jssldn1 yeah it looks and sounds exactly like an r33 just with a silvia interior (and body with that roof) and a 4cyl hence why it IS a s13 silva with an sr20 - and a beastly one at that. This car runs mid 9's o radials now. Theres other videos of it around
@saintluke87 not sayin you are wrong, but how you know it has an sr20? like raceout's fanboi comment, just assumes its an sr20? ahh wait its cause its boosted, you cant turbo any other 240 engine.../sarcasm
@kronikally420 ya ok its an sr tho - its a well known car in aus. Anyway outside of america they only came with the ca or sr and a large number of the ca's would probably be sr20s now. Id like to see pics of one with some other 4banger excluding the ka24. There was one in aus with the 2.4l toyota engine as a dyno car thats all i can recall.
how is the day to day drivabilty. For street driving mostly. and the odd weekend at the track. Pls get back to me. I drive a 435awhp STI and the trans is geting tired.
I don't own the car but am familiar with dog boxes. A dog box is no too bad once you get the hang of it, but you have to be very precise and assertive with your shifts otherwise something will break. They take quite a while to get used to. With your power I'd probably reccomend one but it'll definetely cost you for the 6 spd. lol. :)
Perfect shifting! That is exactly how youre supposed to shift a dog box. Be prepared to service the gear box though. Over time, the dogs can become rounded off from normal wear and tear, and you'll have engagment issues, as well as the gearbox not wanting to stay in gear.
Actually I've pulled it apart after a year to check everything and it's almost perfect! The PPG kits are pretty durable things, though it is just as important to get it right when driving it soft too. I usually double clutch between gear shifts and it does not crunch at all.
that is so fucking awesome. i want one of those. i wwas worried about noise but that sounds beautiful. but i also dont wanna kill diffs or clutches or anything else for tht matter lol. so i'll wait till i have money to burn before gettin one.
looks awesome! I'm going to use a quaife straight cut dog box after this winter in my 320BHP Ford Focus 1 race spec. I thought shifting needs much more arm power and that its much more noisy! I'm getting horny by imagin to shift up without any force interruption and without waiting till the turbo gets the full power again - simply amazing!! I'll try to use it with a lighter flywheel and 7,25inch sintermetallic hard race clutch. What kind of clutch do you have?
No definitely not, it's all about timing. It does take a fair bit of getting use to though. To be honest it took me a couple of months to know exactly how to operate it properly. this dogbox doesn t make ordinary straight cut sound.. why?
cante199 1 year ago
@cante199 dog selection = no synchro's, not the cut of the gear.
Straight cut gears make a whine, you can have them in a normal box if you want.
An example of a straight cut gear is reverse in a normal box, that's why it makes the noise.
