  • dog engagement uses 4 or 6 large teeth to engage each gear - very positive and strong engagement - if used in sequential box can do clutchless changes

synchro engagement uses many smaller teeth to help the gear to engage smoothly and normally quietly

straight cut gears normally used in motorsport and bikes very strong but they do whine

helical cut gears in most standard boxes and are quiet

most road cars have helical gears and synchro engagement for smooth and quiet running

    ps I work for Quaife

  • @fazermanic600~ u should know better!.... u dont need a SEQUENTIAL box to do clutchless shifts!

  • @marek0086 You are correct, sir!

  • @fazermanic600 this man speaks the truth. i have ppg gears in my subaru wrx and 1-2 is straight cut and 3-4 is helical, 1-2 whines loud 3-4 is not loud but still whines a good bit and i left 5 stock for a cruising gear. i love the sound!

  • did you record this with a potato?

  • Love the steering wheel. My bud had one on his MR2. Lucky bastard has a Cayman S now. *insert jealous comment here*

  • can someone explain to me what straight cut gears are. and also what is a dogbox

  • Do they shift quicker and smoother with a more positive engagement? I know that straight cut boxes whine and can handle more power but never really heard of dog box.

  • @vainparasite the quicker you shift, the easier it goes in

  • @demshion23 Dumb Cunt!! That is all.

  • @demshion23 fail cunt thats called a sequential

  • @demshion23 Lulz, a dog box has straight cut gears and can be in a H pattern transmission

  • @workshop77777 the top comment right above your dumbass points out that a dog box does not have anything to do with gear cut. Straight cut gears can be in a full syncromesh trans or a dog box like this one. Your dumber than the guy your 'trying' to correct because the correct information is staring you in the face!

  • @fcguy7 Lulz, who in the name of fuck makes a performance/competition based dog box with helical rather than striaght cut gears as you say??

  • @workshop77777 Just one of the biggest aftermarket gear manufacturers in the world, PPG.

  • @workshop7777 heaps of people do. Not everyone wants to drive around on the street with a transmission screaming in your ear non stop. This car is a perfect example. Sounds normal, super strong, and still with dog engagement. Couldnt think of a better setup for a manual street car.

  • what an amazing fucking throw

  • ANYONE FOR A GAME OF SNOOKER?

  • short ass gears

  • @homecide9000 6000pm rev limit on the run in tune

  • @homecide9000 bahahaha mustn't have driven anything with some power befor mate.. XD

  • i have the same steering wheel in my s13 lol

  • just need a shift cut on it now :)

  • @papayspeanut I was thinking a screwdriver but i guess thats cool if that was the fist thing you thought of....

  • @papayspeanut It is a dildo shitfter...

  • @punkrok6 Yo all you are just mad Cause youre car dosent boost like a mad man.... woooooosssshhhhhht

  • @papayspeanut one that he used on ur mum before maybe?

  • such a pikey car

  • full on confused about dog box geras i thought they were the ones were you shift up every time to go up and down to go down? which gearboxes are them then ?

  • @jackojeff umm I think all gears shift up to go up and down to go down lol.

but i think ur talking about a sequential transmission which is a type of tranny where you can't skip gears, must go in the order of 1-2-3-4-5-6-5-4-3-2-1.

dogbox refers to the actual gears themselves rather to the entire transmission, therefore you can have a sequential dogbox tranny

but getting to the point, dogbox just refers to straight cut gears, which handles a lot more power and faster shifts due to no synchros

  • @SportLeichtRensport

A dogbox has nothing to do with the gears being straight cut or helical. How can you give advice when you dont have a clue yourself?

The amount of people who think they're engineers and know it all amazes me.

  • Ive seen that guy before, just can't recall where

  • So where is the dog box? I think you have a dog in the box!

  • sounds soo good i made this audio my ringtone!

  • clutchless shifting?

  • @icecoldbrew92 flat shifting probs

  • The VTEC just kicked in yo!!!!!

  • Dude my ffgx custom gearbox bogs out cuz my fuckin engine. One time my RPMs went redline and blew on engine. Luckly my axle didnt fuck up.

  • @FreshTuber sick car

  • I attached a video of me learning to drive my dogbox on the street... you can much more clearly hear the lack of clutch shifting when I do it.

  • no clutch? cant imagine the price of that trans

  • @xxnissansilviaxx It HAS a clutch of course... you just don't have to use it when racing. The tranny doesn't have synchro's in it. Tranny is nothing but a group of different sized gears inside so they spin at different speeds because of the size difference. Synchro's match up gears speeds so you can switch from one to the next smoothly. Dogbox tranny's have to be double clutched to match gear speed or "banged" violently once the car hits its rev limiter... they're made to take tons of power.

  • wtf is a dog box

  • @xASSASSINCE5x Look it up, been around for a long long time. Transmission has no synchro's in it so you don't "have" to use the clutch to shift gears. They are very expensive (mine was about "6500) but decrease lag significantly. WOT clutchless shifting FTW.

  • this dogbox doesn t make ordinary straight cut sound.. why?

  • @cante199 dog selection = no synchro's, not the cut of the gear.

Straight cut gears make a whine, you can have them in a normal box if you want.

An example of a straight cut gear is reverse in a normal box, that's why it makes the noise.

  • @Downcut ahh ok i m sorry but i thought that: no syncro=straight cut anyway. so exist gears without syncro but with bent cuts.. i haven't knew about it :)

  • @Downcut good reply

You have good videos, please upload some more, also nice whip!

  • @jameslove6 Thanks James! I will soon with the new turbo setup, just got it back on the road.

  • @Downcut outstanding, i've subscribed will get some vids up also soon

  • @Downcut Yes.. I'm aware.. but why in the world would you not put straight cut gears in a dogbox? I'm HOPING they're at least aftermarket helical cut but even still... if you make any power... straight cut is stronger and the way to go. And it sounds so sexy.

  • @japslapr Of course they are, it's an aftermarket gear set in a factory gearbox. :)

My gear set is rated to 1000hp, over rated for my 700hp car and costs a few grand more. Also for a street car the whine gets annoying on long drives, it's great for the first month though...

  • @Downcut Thats why my dogbox has a stock fifth gear. No whine on long drives (assuming your on the highway in 5th of course). It has custom gearing to make sure the car traps in 4th so the fragile 5th gear is just a cruising gear. Mine is rated to 1000awhp as well and I sit well below that. Question tho... I had an issue with the rods holding the shift forks. You ever have this issue? First time at the track I snapped the rod holding the 1-2 shift fork the second a grabbed second on high boost.

  • @japslapr PPG only offer straight cut 5 speed or helical 4 speed, so I took the helical for that reason, I keep the standard 5th. And I'm trapping at 8500rpm in 4th now so it might be time for taller ratio's. No issues whatsoever man except for me missing 3rd for 1st at 8000rpm in 2nd. Diff boom.

  • @Downcut Lmao...dude, I did the same damn thing. For some reason people seem to think that these cars are easy to drive and that is NOT the case. It takes quite a bit of practice. I went from first, to second, back into 1st while WOT/clutchless shifting and revved the motor up to 10k rpm. Insert valve float and bent every valve in the heads. The shock from the pistons smacking valves spun a rod bearing so I had to pull and rebuild a $10k motor after only 1500 miles(1k of that being break in). :(

  • @Downcut PPG assembled my tranny with a few of their parts (speedo gear, billet shift forks, etc...) but the gearset was actually made by PAR. Aussie based company.

  • @japslapr BTW your car sounds great, I'll upload another vid with some incar footage next week at the track.

  • @Downcut~ u better be running the RedLine "Shockproof" oil!

  • @marek0086 No I run Royal Purple Max Gear 75W-90

  • @Downcut ~ so do u need a Sequential gearbox for straight cut gears?

  • @Downcut

    learn something new everyday

  • Damn...are you really tall? How can you drive with your knees in that position> The wheel is actually rubbing on your legs! You need a longer steering column.

  • its called rpm shifting =]

  • Holy fucking lightning fast shifting! :O

Thats about the same speed as my bike without quickshifter (need to roll the throttle off a little bit to engage next gear).

  • hey is this PJ321???

  • Saw you at Powercruise on Saturday Paul. Awesome sounding SR. Best ive heard, and just sounded like it had balls. Read all about it in PI, but had no idea how it went. Saw problems though early in the morning. Easy fixed? Lol, i'll definately come pleading for a shotgun ride next time.

  • Thanks mate, yeah it always manages to make people smile :). I had a couple of issues actually, snapped a throttle body shaft and had a bad earth to the crank angle sensor. Sorted it for Sunday though and put some big cars in their places! 3rd in the drags and a nice skid which I have posted up here too.

Well I'll be there next year because that was the best even I've ever been to, come and say hi. Cheers.

  • whats doubel cluching

  • do u have to double clutch between shifts or can u just shift normally

  • I find it smoother to double clutch, but you can time it without the clutch at all.

  • i thought you only had to double clutch when downshifting?

  • is this one of the writers cars in zoom or HPI....it looks familiar..

  • Once upon a time ;)

  • whats the difference between a sequential gear box and a sequential dog gear box?

  • Dog engagement = internal gear selection, sequential = external gear selection (straight up, straight down) so put the two together and you have a sequential dog box. You can also have a sequential shifter on a synchro box.

  • External = either H-pattern or sequential.

Internal = either syncro box or dog selection.

You can put a sequential shifter on a synchro box but it wil never shift as fast as dog engagement. Look up Ikeya Formula squential shifter and you'll see what I mean, then check out the way a rally car shifts ;)

  • thanks it helps ;]

  • do you stay on the throttle when you upshift, without using the clutch?

  • well you lett off on the gas and get back on very quickly just to take le load of the transmission but you dont clutch

  • As citydriver said, you need to back off the gas slightly to take the load off the dogs in order to pull the next gear. Look closely at my right leg just before I shift...

  • What car is this?

  • @b00stinz Looks like an s13 silvia. Probz running a sr20det.

  • @raceout tataly an r33

  • @raceout with a gate

  • @jssldn1 yeah it looks and sounds exactly like an r33 just with a silvia interior (and body with that roof) and a 4cyl hence why it IS a s13 silva with an sr20 - and a beastly one at that. This car runs mid 9's o radials now. Theres other videos of it around

  • @saintluke87 not sayin you are wrong, but how you know it has an sr20? like raceout's fanboi comment, just assumes its an sr20? ahh wait its cause its boosted, you cant turbo any other 240 engine.../sarcasm

  • @kronikally420 ya ok its an sr tho - its a well known car in aus. Anyway outside of america they only came with the ca or sr and a large number of the ca's would probably be sr20s now. Id like to see pics of one with some other 4banger excluding the ka24. There was one in aus with the 2.4l toyota engine as a dyno car thats all i can recall.

  • @raceout Wow it says S13 silvia in the video tags, are you a wizard?

  • how is the day to day drivabilty. For street driving mostly. and the odd weekend at the track. Pls get back to me. I drive a 435awhp STI and the trans is geting tired.

  • I don't own the car but am familiar with dog boxes. A dog box is no too bad once you get the hang of it, but you have to be very precise and assertive with your shifts otherwise something will break. They take quite a while to get used to. With your power I'd probably reccomend one but it'll definetely cost you for the 6 spd. lol. :)

  • is it h- pattern when you shift or is it just back and forth i cant tell

  • It's H-pattern ;)

  • k thanx

  • does anyone know how much that would cost?

  • About $7k Australian

  • do u have to use the clutch when u downshift

  • If you are brave you dont have to, you can just rev match, but I dab the clutch.

  • where did you source the c's shifter?

    straght from japan?

i connot find any sellers in the U.S.

  • It was through Japan, I'm in Australia though and there were importers selling them here for many years.

  • yeah, thier nearly non-existant here in america

  • Yep made in Australia ;)

  • would you recommend for daily use?

  • They are pretty noisy when you're on and off the power, the clutch is the killer really.

You can live with it no problem, but it takes a lot of getting used to.

  • do u use the clutch at all? other then setting off im guessing.

  • When cruising around I do, it ensures that there is no crunching whatsoever, particularly from 1st to 2nd.

  • oh fuck me finally i thought everyone on youtube using a dogbox is a retard.

    thank god you can shift.

    once again, thanks!.

  • Thank you, thank you ;)

  • hey man that is so awesome ..u think theres 1 like that ..that can fit a 1969 camaro?? i really liked it

  • Perfect shifting! That is exactly how youre supposed to shift a dog box. Be prepared to service the gear box though. Over time, the dogs can become rounded off from normal wear and tear, and you'll have engagment issues, as well as the gearbox not wanting to stay in gear.

  • Actually I've pulled it apart after a year to check everything and it's almost perfect! The PPG kits are pretty durable things, though it is just as important to get it right when driving it soft too. I usually double clutch between gear shifts and it does not crunch at all.

  • Hey how much did the PPG kit cost you?

  • ppg 1-5 gear sets are usually around the 6k mark

  • kewl tanks

  • that is so fucking awesome. i want one of those. i wwas worried about noise but that sounds beautiful. but i also dont wanna kill diffs or clutches or anything else for tht matter lol. so i'll wait till i have money to burn before gettin one.

  • Awesome! how much whine is there on the helical PPG sets? I've got an Impreza & I'm considering swapping my 6MT back to a 5MT PPG

    thanks

  • No, no they aren't really loud at all. Definitely worth it once you get the knack of driving them, which can take a while to perfect :)

  • sorry i know this is a stupid question bt what is a dog box

  • I just installed a C's Short stroke for my Z32 cant wait till summer nice shifting.

  • Nice, im using Quaife 6 speed straight cut on my saab 9000 aero

  • looks awesome! I'm going to use a quaife straight cut dog box after this winter in my 320BHP Ford Focus 1 race spec. I thought shifting needs much more arm power and that its much more noisy! I'm getting horny by imagin to shift up without any force interruption and without waiting till the turbo gets the full power again - simply amazing!! I'll try to use it with a lighter flywheel and 7,25inch sintermetallic hard race clutch. What kind of clutch do you have?

    best regards

  • No definitely not, it's all about timing. It does take a fair bit of getting use to though. To be honest it took me a couple of months to know exactly how to operate it properly. I broke a diff by engaging first instead of third from 8000 rpm in second gear on the first day. Because there are no synchros, nothing stops it from going into first. Clutch is an OS Giken Competition series twin plate

  • wat kit is it ppg?

  • Sure is. Helical cut

  • so wait thats a stock gearbox with just a short shifter or a actual dogbox

  • It's a dog gear set. It replaces all of the gears and syncro's, and there is a short shift kit in it as well. ;)

  • Same thing on a motorcycle. I just rebuilt the transmission on my Honda VF700 from the idiot that owned it before me, and if you do it right, shifting from 3000-up is super easy w/o the clutch. Snick!

  • Yea if you get good at shifting the dogs will never round. Good job rowing that dogbox BTW.

  • It depends on how smooth your shifts are. At high revs they go in like butter.

  • How long will that box last if you dont use the clutch?
