And no one listened! We have more and more little boxes made of ticky-tacky sprouting up all over. I'm in my late 50's and think of this song (that I heard in my youth) every time I pass through a development or see housing going up...not much individuality or imagination.
Pete is a legend - a musical seer, perhaps more so than Dylan and others of his era, of which I am part, though not talented-enough to perform what I felt and believed.
What seems meaningless in the song is only one alternative of living life, there are so many different ways to live your life, why stick to the one all the people around you are going for? Create your own way! :)
Just the way I feel when I look at the all these boring subdivisions. Not all people living in those boxes are truly boxed in people though. But most of them are.
@JDBlessin I want to beat the fuck out of you for saying that. Now i realize that this is the internet and thats not possible, but, im just saying: if you were my friend and said that i'd prolly break your jaw
too pitty, that musicans like Pete Seeger are going to be forgetten. He is such a awesome musican in the war and peace time the last century. Let him be unforgetable!
@Zedisch I don't really think this will go ignored in time. Songs like this still seem to have a kind of relevance. Also "What Did You Learn In School" too. Someone will eventually come along and cover that stuff. Like the way The White Stripes brought Son House back. I think it still has a place.
the song is about people waning to conform to what everyone else wants for them instead of what they want so they end up being put in "boxes" without even knowing it. also it was common in that time to have a modernistic society where everyone did exactly the same thing so i think this song was also meant as a wake up call to many in that time period.
@srpooper ''I feel it's more about people being processed through cookie cutters''
I think you're right, at the time there was a worker who fell inside a grinder at a meat processing plant and he ended up canned. The song is giving us a warning about the dangers of ending up packaged.
@eliasasdf lol so many thumbs wtf 0o this is the original version sang exactly the same like malvina stupids... dont make comments if you dotn understand what ur talking about... thx

@DarrylBarnesDance Yes it is. I'm glad that someone else knows it for what it is and not a theme song for a stupid show.

Nothing wrong with being in a box if the box is good for you.

@Zedisch
Musicians will never be forgotten as long as people do not allow it to happen..
If musicians such as Bach and Beethoven are still remembered and revered, so can the true musicians of the 20th century be remember.
