@SoadJonny If the heads are just dirty: yes: sometimes somewhere a bit (or something... just a guess) gets lost in playback: I recently had a recording that suddenly started to emit very strange noise on only the left channel: As I didn't knew if it was a problem on the computer or that the source already messed up, I stopped playback, rewound the tape, and started playback again, and the video just played without errors in sound or image. It just went wrong on the camera somewhere...
2. your tape is screwed up-old, well-worn tapes may be stretched or scrunched (which would cause the sound to "flutter" as well as weird picture issues) or have scratches on the recording surface
3.your camera's erase head is not working- there is a seperate head that erases the original recording from the tape during recording if you're "taping over" something. When it does not work, you see something like that
Ye I rarely get the problem. It was just a JVC tape. I think it probably was dirty heads, anyway i broke my camera (dropped it off a roof, don't ask :\ ) so its fine now :)
Dirty tape heads , get a tape cleaner and use it frequently.
Sony tapes from normal stores are awful.
Using different tapes from different companies in one camera will screw up the tape heads. If you've done that before clean the camera heads several times and then stick to one brand.
Try only ordering professional tapes from CANNON, JVC, or other brands.

several possibilities
1. the inside of your camera needs cleaning
2. your tape is screwed up-old, well-worn tapes may be stretched or scrunched (which would cause the sound to "flutter" as well as weird picture issues) or have scratches on the recording surface
3.your camera's erase head is not working- there is a seperate head that erases the original recording from the tape during recording if you're "taping over" something. When it does not work, you see something like that

Recently I've had the worst trouble with Panasonic AY-DVM63AMQ tapes, they constanly have digital drop out and dropped audio.

That's the result of a few possibilties:
Dirty tape heads , get a tape cleaner and use it frequently.
Sony tapes from normal stores are awful.
