@childofdemonicwind24 : How interesting! Considering how all sorts of TV shows are on YouTube these days, I'm rather surprised PL & J haven't made the cut.
@childofdemonicwind24 IIRC Rhino put out a 20th anniversary VHS set of it in 2000. It's also in DVD in Japan, but their DVDs may not be region-compatible with our players.
can't decide if they're making the American dancers look fat or if the American dancers are make them look skinny. meanwhile nobody on that stage is actually fat or skinny by today's standards.
@NolitaDenise Damn you and your later bedtime. At least I got to wake up early on Sunday morning and watch infomercials not realizing they were infomercials, that now explains why the same program was on every week.
This was just one of several cookie-cutter variety series' in the mid-late 70s. The two Japanese girls were cute but, supposedly, they could barely speak a word of English. So, their lip-synching here is actually pretty impressive.
Not really impressive considering that the camera pans away from them whenever the lyrics get any more complicated than er... "Boogie Wonderland."
But what is impressive is their energy and commitment considering how overworked and exhausted they were. No matter how shit the scene they still really sold it like true pros.
@krakenwave - it's not just that. it's also that it's a lot easier to lip sync to a foreign language than to speak in it and easier to sing than speak in it. If you look closely, one of them is singing a song called "Boogie Wonder Lamb" which sounds like a sounds like a Pixar movie title...I'm letting it go cuz I'm a j-hag who actually believes that engrish is the most adorable language on earth. Still that is what she's singing.
So this was the era before pornification. I love it! It's surprisingly refreshing to see dance moves that don't include stripper-esque gyrating. Also, I don't think any girls had fake boobs in that dance number, which you just don't see these days.
Hoo boy...and network execs thought this would sell in 1980?? Thought it would hold its own on 1 out of 3 channels? This clip is very much like the programming on the foreign-language public access channel in my area. (Yes, by that I mean THIS style of music, but in the PRESENT day!) There are probably hundreds of native speakers who watch Asian variety shows like this, but no one else does. And the USA was less diverse 30 years ago too!

Diskoboy1974: I never heard that rumor you mentioned, nor do I think it's true. I know for a fact that the Philadelphia NBC affiliate (where I live) never switched from the show, in fact the show ran for it's full six week run in most of it's markets. I'm no expert on how Hollywood works, but the notion of a show getting the ax in the middle of an episode is unheard of. Sure, PL & J wasn't "must see TV", but I liked it.
I heard NBC literally canceled this show in the middle of the first episode, and during the first commercial break, alot of NBC affiliates switched to another program - right in the middle of the show.
PL&J is known as one of the worst TV shows of all time, and I figured the rumor could be credible. I was about 5 when this originally aired, so I wouldn't remember.
Just for the record, they did learn the lyrics phonetically. I was a dancer on the show. They were sweet girls. Sid and Marty had some "unusual" ideas. Remember, they also brought "Donny & Marie" to prime time. Worked that show too!
u were really a dancer on that show or another lie i mean ahhh fucking cool this girls are so beautiful did they ever came to Mexico by chance someday i mean at that time not now of course but still is that true waht ur saying?? u were a dancer???
Is it the best "Boogie Wonderland" I've ever heard? No.
Have I heard worse covers of various songs? Oh yeah.
Imagine that you don't speak any Japanese, and suddenly you're asked to sing "Neko Hanten"... in Japanese... in Japan. I doubt that even our best singers would do any better, and would probably do worse.
I give Pink Lady points for having the guts. And you know, it wasn't that bad.
They looked starved and exhausted. The show must have been a misrable experience for them - bet they were pleased to go back home and put this crap behind them
If you are not used to being around sarcastic assholes, what on earth are you doing on the Internet? Me thinks you need to lighten up, all that worry bother will really make you bitter. btw - I never eat dolphin safe tuna.
Yes you were correct, then again you were being rather trite with you PC finger-shaking self righteously indignant and snarky reply. In the words of Seargant Hulka "lighten up, Francis."
Beautiful, sweet, and talented. I don't care if their English was limited. We need more beautiful, talented girl acts from the Far East like Pink Lady, and less exposure to people like Britney Spears, Ashley Simpson, etc.!
I can't imagine being thrown into a situation where as an English speaker I was thrown onto a weekly TV show where I had to sing songs and deliver lines in Japanese. Taking that into consideration, they held up as well as anyone who had no prior experience in the English language would have.
The problem with the entire series was, that after Fred Silverman saw Mei and Kei on the cover of a magazine and decided to "build" a variety show around them, he never inquired if they could speak a word of English. They couldn't...and that didn't help if you were trying to stage comedy sketches around them (fortunately, Sid Caesar could perform his "Japanese double-talk" and carry some of those sketches in a few episodes).
This show was the lowest television had sunk until the premier of "Growing Up Gotti". Forget cocaine, they were huffing paint when they thought this up.
Not as good as PL's original songs, but brings back great memories of finally seeing Mie and Kei perform again. I'd only seen them on Leif Garrett's special, singing just one song. Too bad this series didn't live up to the hype. :(
Was this supposed to be hilarious?

Just for the record, they did learn the lyrics phonetically. I was a dancer on the show. They were sweet girls. Sid and Marty had some "unusual" ideas. Remember, they also brought "Donny & Marie" to prime time. Worked that show too!

I remember this show! It was with a comedian named Jeff Altman. I heard that they sang the english songs phonetically. Thanks for posting!

If you are not used to being around sarcastic assholes, what on earth are you doing on the Internet? Me thinks you need to lighten up, all that worry bother will really make you bitter. btw - I never eat dolphin safe tuna.

dolphingirl555 4 years ago
Yes you were correct, then again you were being rather trite with you PC finger-shaking self righteously indignant and snarky reply. In the words of Seargant Hulka "lighten up, Francis."

Beautiful, sweet, and talented. I don't care if their English was limited. We need more beautiful, talented girl acts from the Far East like Pink Lady, and less exposure to people like Britney Spears, Ashley Simpson, etc.!

xDD Bless Pink Lady... Japan loves them. I love them. W fans....love them.....and those are the greatest people on earth!

I can't imagine being thrown into a situation where as an English speaker I was thrown onto a weekly TV show where I had to sing songs and deliver lines in Japanese. Taking that into consideration, they held up as well as anyone who had no prior experience in the English language would have.

Who cares about legendary performers like Barbra Streisand when stories like this haven't been told!

Forget cocaine, they were huffing paint when they thought this up.
skrag1 5 years ago
I was just going to comment that what seems like a good idea on cocaine rarely is. Just speculation, of course.

Thank heaven for Sid and Marty Kroft! And Rhino! "Uh uh it don't work." Actually it does. But not in the way intended. Fab-u-lous!

Not as good as PL's original songs, but brings back great memories of finally seeing Mie and Kei perform again. I'd only seen them on Leif Garrett's special, singing just one song. Too bad this series didn't live up to the hype. :(
