  • Was this supposed to be hilarious?

  • I almost cried

  • いつもの自分達の歌を歌えば良かったのに

    米国人に媚びるより、素っ頓狂な独自のダンスで度肝を抜いて

    新しい快感を開発してやった方が売れたのでしょう。

  • I used to Love this show. I think all the crap we get makes unable to appreciate simple creative Idea the shows from the 70s Times were different , some times it pays to be humble and enjoy things for what they Are and not what is cool today!

  • Oh my god . . . .words cannot describe this. Jeepers . . .

  • Back in the early 1980's one of the top television technicians was asked to comment on the quality of television programing. His answer: "We're like plumbers, we're not responsible for what goes through the pipe".

  • i wonder if there's somewhere i could find the entirety of the show Pink Lady and Jeff online episode-wise.... i read about it in a joke book and have been trying to find it out of curiosity....

  • @childofdemonicwind24 : Well, you could try YouTube. There might be entire episodes available there for viewing.

  • @JeffB1959 Actually, i've looked all through YouTube for episodes of it. i've looked everywhere else too, and all i can find are small clips of it.

  • @childofdemonicwind24 : How interesting! Considering how all sorts of TV shows are on YouTube these days, I'm rather surprised PL & J haven't made the cut.

  • @childofdemonicwind24 IIRC Rhino put out a 20th anniversary VHS set of it in 2000. It's also in DVD in Japan, but their DVDs may not be region-compatible with our players.

  • @childofdemonicwind24

Well, I know the discs are available from Netflix. Don't know if they've got em in streaming form.

  • This is so bad, it's sublime.

  • can't decide if they're making the American dancers look fat or if the American dancers are make them look skinny. meanwhile nobody on that stage is actually fat or skinny by today's standards.

  • You mean I was alive when this was on? Thank goodness my bedtime in 1980 was 7:30.

  • @toucansam3 - ha! mine was 8:00 got to watch 30 mins more crap than u back then :P.

  • @NolitaDenise Damn you and your later bedtime. At least I got to wake up early on Sunday morning and watch infomercials not realizing they were infomercials, that now explains why the same program was on every week.

  • This is just WRONG (LOL)

  • This was just one of several cookie-cutter variety series' in the mid-late 70s. The two Japanese girls were cute but, supposedly, they could barely speak a word of English. So, their lip-synching here is actually pretty impressive.

  • @ftsjr

Not really impressive considering that the camera pans away from them whenever the lyrics get any more complicated than er... "Boogie Wonderland."

But what is impressive is their energy and commitment considering how overworked and exhausted they were. No matter how shit the scene they still really sold it like true pros.

  • @krakenwave - it's not just that. it's also that it's a lot easier to lip sync to a foreign language than to speak in it and easier to sing than speak in it. If you look closely, one of them is singing a song called "Boogie Wonder Lamb" which sounds like a sounds like a Pixar movie title...I'm letting it go cuz I'm a j-hag who actually believes that engrish is the most adorable language on earth. Still that is what she's singing.

  • omg... it just keeps going ! when will it stop !!!

  • WTF?!!!

  • SAD! But Endearing.

  • @Zumyluvin : Yeah! That's one way to put it! ^_^

  • @JeffB1959 ...a miss, but an inspired one by NBC. Japan could save the auto industry, but television was another world...

  • @JeffB1959

    HaHa! This is horrible.

  • So this was the era before pornification. I love it! It's surprisingly refreshing to see dance moves that don't include stripper-esque gyrating. Also, I don't think any girls had fake boobs in that dance number, which you just don't see these days.

  • Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

  • Alice Cooper guested on this show.

They expected him to send a tape like everyone else.

Instead he showed up with his current band

Cause he heard they had a Japanese buffet backstage.

  • 時給850円なら、鳥貴族!食事付きが嬉しいな、バイトする身に成ると。解る!

  • Im reminded of bridget jones' diary.

    "Wike a Wirgin"

  • Where did thye find all those dancing skanks?

  • That TV show was a flop! I remember!

  • @mondocaneman Me too! 30 years ago, i watch every Friday nights until the show was cancelled.

  • This show lasted , what...6 episodes?

  • @999manman: That it did. Amazing, huh? Heh!

  • @JeffB1959 They should have guested on Supertrain!!!

  • @mammatusofmystery : HA! That was funny!

  • @JeffB1959 OOps....wrong YT account...let it be known that 999manman made that funny remark!!!

  • they were both born in hiroshima. ggess the radiation is still cooking the gene pool over there

  • Hoo boy...and network execs thought this would sell in 1980?? Thought it would hold its own on 1 out of 3 channels? This clip is very much like the programming on the foreign-language public access channel in my area. (Yes, by that I mean THIS style of music, but in the PRESENT day!) There are probably hundreds of native speakers who watch Asian variety shows like this, but no one else does. And the USA was less diverse 30 years ago too!

  • these chicks are hot

  • I thought I was going crazy. Over the years I have asked countless people if they remember the Pink Lady variety show and no one did. I thought I might have imagined this train wreck. I'm so glad to see that I wasn't crazy, just scarred for life.

  • @rbjnla : Aww! The show wasn't THAT bad! Okay, I take that back, it was! ^_^

  • @JeffB1959 why they singing a song and cant speak english ...

  • @sierria64: Well, why not? HA!

  • @rbjnla: Glad to have been of service! Heh!

  • @rbjnla i can relate. i used to ask everyone if they remembered pink lady and no one seemed to know what the heck i was talking about. guess that explains why the show lasted 6 episodes, if that.

  • @rbjnla m- Boy-oh-boyo-boy!! Anyone crass enough to call these grogeous women singing and those fantastic dancers (take a good look at those gams)- - -

Well, I can tell you my friend ... I sure as crazy don't mind watching that kind of a train wreck!! You're nutz.

  • SCMK29, I do think you have a point. There were no Asian gals where I grew up but have always had a thing for them too. Wonder if indeed it was PL&J that was the catalyst for this. After watching this I keep think of the Vic-20 and Apple II and huge stereo head phones

  • SCMK29, I do think you have a point. There were no Asian gals where I grew up but have always had a thing for them too. Wonder if indeed it was PL&J that was the catalyst for this. After watching this I keep think of the Vic-20 and Apple II and huge stereo head phones

  • The show totally blue ass but Mei and Kei, I would SO hit it FROGGY STYLE!

  • LOL! I remember watching that show when I was a kid and getting my first "tingle" down below..lmao. I've had a thing for asian women ever since!

  • i love Pink lady!!! never knew they cvered this song, though. lol. now i have to go listen to "kiss in the dark" and find "hyokkori hyotanjima." i love how morning musume and their splinter groups cover PL songs like mad!

  • I used to watch this when I was 14 and high as shit.

  • Now you're 40 and doing the same thing.

  • That was the ONLY way to watch this Epic-LOL

  • After watching all these scantily clad dancers, I can't really see why this only lasted 5 episodes. Wrong demographic maybe?

  • To be perfectly honest, I don't know if PL&J ever had ANY sort of demographic. Since the show was slated for only six episodes, it was like Sid and Marty ran the show up the proverbial flagpole to see if anyone would salute. It was certainly a wild crazy effort to say the least.

  • Well, when those two are on screen, part of me stands at attention....

  • Solid Gold had much better half-naked dancers bending over and sticking in the camera...believe me, it was that and Benny Hill for my adolescent titillation. You kids have NO idea how much better you have it with the Internet!

  • Back and your days we had to FIGHT for your porn. It was going ton stand by me/Indiana Jones epic quests to find the place where the 8th Graders hid the playboys.

None of this free hot asian lesbian school girls orgys we get on the internet. it was squinting your eyes to make out a tit on scrambled Skinemax.

  • like zamphir, the harmonies are hauntingly beautiful

  • what the fuck?!

  • LOL to the people saying this was typical of the late 70's. Okay yes there was a lot of variety shows, and a lot of them did kind of stink (and hey, the Star Wars Holiday Special was also from the late 70's!) but at the same time, even back in the 70's people knew this show was awful, it only aired for 5 or 6 episodes. :P Pink Lady & Jeff wasn't a popular show then either. :P

  • An enema would be more entertaining.

  • I was a little kid in 1980--edward is right; this is what passed for entertainment in those days. Imagine there never being ANYTHING good on tv.

  • I find Japanese comedy so funny (well obviously) but it's so different especially in this time period.

  • Comment removed

  • ughh we need to put some caucassian women in the middle because the asian women are a novelty know one will find them attractive so we give the audience the real eye candy in the middle, NBCs logic

  • You kids don't know how lucky you have it these days w/cable and the internet...back in the day,THIS was mainstream broadcast tv!It made sense to air this after Donny and Marie Variety hr!

  • the one on the right is the worst lip singer ever.

  • @samantha5x thats why most of their performances were live.

  • I love the Krofft dancers. A tad bit haggy.

  • Well, you're the first person to admit liking the Krofft Dancers. That's certainly special! ^_^

  • is it another Disaster movie??i like how they singin.

but why how come a group of white sissy dressed in bikini appear in the middle of the show??

  • wow! awesome job ladies. i could not sing like that

  • You just don't get stuff like this anymore.

  • WHAT THE???????

  • say it !!!! what the fuck !!????????????

  • now i am just kinda afraid

  • WOW!!! Thank you Allee Willis and EWF!

This is so scary...and hilarious but scary ...really. They should have kept the kimono's ...but where did the whilte women come from? Where did they import them....????

    Sacres me.

    Entertains me...but....eeeeeeeekkkkk!!!

  • This is disturbing on so many levels.

  • agreed.

  • WTF??????????

  • @BroadwayBill im sorry, how is this disturbing?? its a performance.. -_-

  • such a brutal show

  • Wasn't '80 a little late for disco?

  • Yeah, but it was still mondo cool! ^_^

  • Mondo, dude.

  • lol mondo

  • Wasn't pink lady and jeff like competition for tony orlando's show or something? Me, I'd rather watch captain and tenile..

  • Nahhh! But, if memory serves, PL & J was on at the same time as Dallas. Predictably, J.R. and the rest of the Ewing clan kicked butt, but hey, I didn't care, I still loved the show!

  • LAWL... japanese singing boogie wonderland, cute stuff! xD

    Thx for the upload! ^^

  • If you say it's a bad show..why I'll drop you like a bad transmission.

  • You won't get that from me as PL & J is the ultimate guilty pleasure! HA!

  • and those dancing girls were told that they were going to a avon party.

  • I like the comment about Jeff Melman being then (and now) little known. His career was apparently on the rise when he agreed to do Pink Lady And Jeff, and it's been suggested that it completely derailed his career. He was forever after stuck doing sitcom guest appearances (I remember him on an episode of Night Court) and I guess later on he started directing them too.

  • Pancakes!

  • well said brother! pancakes indeed!! LONG LIVE THE PANCAKE!!!

  • melbell5287, Earth Wind and Fire origionally made the song. Pink Lady did a terrific version of this song. They are Japanese, therefore they had extremely heavy accents. The conservative vs. sexy image thoughts of a Japanese-girl will always facinate us. Especially the school girl archytype...

  • Look, I love Britanny Murphy, but these girls do a much better job.

First of all, mel, They are Japanese. English is not their native language. If you hear them in Japanese, they are excellent singers.

  • Pink Lady's great. Their songs are catchy and their vocals are uaually strong. But REALLY? You think this is better than Brittany Murphy's version? Meh.

  • YOU SUCK melbell5287 (

  • Enough of your racist comments.

  • i use to enjoy this show when it was aired...I love the 70s...disco,camp and lots of fun...

  • I remember seeing this show when I was a kid. I'm Japanese American. The humor of the show was terrible--the two women didn't speak much english. So Jeff would say something silly, ask if they understood, and they would nod and say "yes", then shake their heads later and say "no". It was their only schtick. The music & choreography was pretty good for their time--along lines of ABBA, preceding the Tony Basils and Paula Abduls of the 1980's. And they were cute! If only they had better writers...

  • Diskoboy1974: I never heard that rumor you mentioned, nor do I think it's true. I know for a fact that the Philadelphia NBC affiliate (where I live) never switched from the show, in fact the show ran for it's full six week run in most of it's markets. I'm no expert on how Hollywood works, but the notion of a show getting the ax in the middle of an episode is unheard of. Sure, PL & J wasn't "must see TV", but I liked it.

  • You're absolutely right. Sort of. NBC axed the show after five episodes, the sixth episode went unseen until Rhino released the series on DVD.

    DANCE! (MUMBLE!)

  • Someone wanna verify a rumor I heard.

I heard NBC literally canceled this show in the middle of the first episode, and during the first commercial break, alot of NBC affiliates switched to another program - right in the middle of the show.

PL&J is known as one of the worst TV shows of all time, and I figured the rumor could be credible. I was about 5 when this originally aired, so I wouldn't remember.

  • *Thankfully* short-lived show. Though Pink Lady was a beautiful duo.

  • Beautiful girls. Just plain beautiful.

  • oh shit

  • hhaha that was unexcpectedd

  • i'm a star...a bright and shining star

  • Haha, it shows how Westerern media are fond of distorting Japan as they like.

Compare them with what was performed for Japanese audience in Japan. You can see it quite different!

  • x_x

  • oh snap...chines girls,like the dress

  • lol awsome lol hapy feet

  • they look like robots..for some strange reason that was hot though..

  • Just for the record, they did learn the lyrics phonetically. I was a dancer on the show. They were sweet girls. Sid and Marty had some "unusual" ideas. Remember, they also brought "Donny & Marie" to prime time. Worked that show too!

  • u were really a dancer on that show or another lie i mean ahhh fucking cool this girls are so beautiful did they ever came to Mexico by chance someday i mean at that time not now of course but still is that true waht ur saying?? u were a dancer???

  • I remember this show! It was with a comedian named Jeff Altman. I heard that they sang the english songs phonetically. Thanks for posting!

  • finally something by them i could understand ...lol some stuff they did was actually kinda catchy

  • Is it the best "Boogie Wonderland" I've ever heard? No.

Have I heard worse covers of various songs? Oh yeah.

Imagine that you don't speak any Japanese, and suddenly you're asked to sing "Neko Hanten"... in Japanese... in Japan. I doubt that even our best singers would do any better, and would probably do worse.

I give Pink Lady points for having the guts. And you know, it wasn't that bad.

  • This is kinda creepy..

  • GOD DAMN, THIS IS WEIRD!!!

  • They looked starved and exhausted. The show must have been a misrable experience for them - bet they were pleased to go back home and put this crap behind them

  • This girl in my class keeps on singing this!

    She cant sing for shit!

  • Boogie runderand?

  • they speak a different language

sue them if they cant sing with the same exact dialect as you?

  • Um, humor, it's otay Sparky. I'm asian myself me so sorry.

  • sorry my mistake

im just used to being around sarcastic ass holes so i misunderstood

  • If you are not used to being around sarcastic assholes, what on earth are you doing on the Internet? Me thinks you need to lighten up, all that worry bother will really make you bitter. btw - I never eat dolphin safe tuna.

  • i said i AM used to being around sarcastic assholes and i thought you were being one

  • Yes you were correct, then again you were being rather trite with you PC finger-shaking self righteously indignant and snarky reply. In the words of Seargant Hulka "lighten up, Francis."

  • a massacre a crime for this song

  • Very leggy!

  • Um..are those dancing girls the other muses from "Xanadu"? LOL

  • iTs niCe

  • ok, so theyre not drag queens..

  • aww...... they sing pretty!

  • OMG im azn and that's just embaressing....

  • gag.

  • Where's Jeff? Did they throw him under a bus once they became stars??

    Yarp!

  • Beautiful, sweet, and talented. I don't care if their English was limited. We need more beautiful, talented girl acts from the Far East like Pink Lady, and less exposure to people like Britney Spears, Ashley Simpson, etc.!

  • xDD Bless Pink Lady... Japan loves them. I love them. W fans....love them.....and those are the greatest people on earth!

  • I can't imagine being thrown into a situation where as an English speaker I was thrown onto a weekly TV show where I had to sing songs and deliver lines in Japanese. Taking that into consideration, they held up as well as anyone who had no prior experience in the English language would have.

  • Who cares about legendary performers like Barbra Streisand when stories like this haven't been told!

  • Me love this long time!

  • I'm kind of surpised their voices went perfectly with the song

  • The problem with the entire series was, that after Fred Silverman saw Mei and Kei on the cover of a magazine and decided to "build" a variety show around them, he never inquired if they could speak a word of English. They couldn't...and that didn't help if you were trying to stage comedy sketches around them (fortunately, Sid Caesar could perform his "Japanese double-talk" and carry some of those sketches in a few episodes).

  • very beautiful and talented singers - very delightful video - thank you for up loading -

  • God bless this cheese. I wish it hadn't been canceled. Seriously, this is kitsch gold.

  • Before there was Sanjaya...there was PINK LADY!!! lol!

  • When I saw that it was Boogie Wonderland,it is my favorite song,I thought it was the latest version from Happy Feet.

  • Dude, that's how I wake up every day!

  • Oh god, rofl.

Pink Lady. Gotta love the classics. :D

  • Japanese women,,,,wow!! Stripping kimono, great legs.

  • I wanna see PL in NBS more!

    GREAT PINKLADY!

  • This show was the lowest television had sunk until the premier of "Growing Up Gotti". Forget cocaine, they were huffing paint when they thought this up.

  • I was just going to comment that what seems like a good idea on cocaine rarely is. Just speculation, of course.

  • Thank heaven for Sid and Marty Kroft! And Rhino! "Uh uh it don't work." Actually it does. But not in the way intended. Fab-u-lous!

  • Jesus, that was abysmal.

  • I like in Happy Feet

  • I'm guessing a lot of cocaine was involved in the production of this show.

  • lol what a crap

  • This is the first time I've heard Pink Lady in english sing,I love it.

  • where are there tap shoes

  • Not as good as PL's original songs, but brings back great memories of finally seeing Mie and Kei perform again. I'd only seen them on Leif Garrett's special, singing just one song. Too bad this series didn't live up to the hype. :(
