Interesting. I always use a way of addition he doesn't mention. if you have the example at 7.22, I do something like : 3+5(x100), 4+2(x10) and 5+3(x1), counting from left to right and from up to down. So in my head I only see 800+60+8=868, and you don't really have to count ;)
