  • Wow! I feel like a great musical secret was revealed to me. Much thanks.

  • Really!!! get a real drum set electric sucks bro, but nice groove. R.I.P JAMES SULLIVAN

  • electric kit. FAIL

  • Hey man, is this some kind of blueprint of purdie shuffle?

  • @TheBrazenHell Well spotted, yeah it's definitely based on the Purdie/Bonham shuffle for sure! Such a cool groove :)

  • Thank you for this clear and slow demonstration of this. There are others lessons out there for this but the ones I found assume you can pick this up without explanation of the triplet structure. Once explained I was able to play this pretty simply at 160 BPM pretty much right away, it's just a matter of sticking. Great lesson man!

  • @ericgtr Thanks for the kind words. I'm chuffed that you found my video so useful. Thanks for your interest! Rob :)

  • Cheers...you have the best shuffle video out there mate!!

  • jus asking, do yu always play with an electric kit, cus i personally think acoustic is better

  • Nicely explained groove fella! Ignore all the muppets that seem to complain about guys like you, you add something positive to the drumming community... keep it up lad!

  • @justinriley13 Cheers mate! Rob

  • Good job trying but buddy. No one ever goes online and looks for these, they just pick up 2 sticks and start jamming. That's how people start, and I bet you did.

  • Hey @Likeforadislike, I think my online customers and private drum pupils would disagree with you there bud. Thanks for your interest though. You can find more videos on my website! Rob :)

  • @Likeforadislike you're wrong! you can learn the way you're talking about but it's always good to have these kinds of videos, it's always good to learn from someone that knows more than you. PS I'm learning drums.

  • @Likeforadislike How did you end up here then?

  • heyy...youre pretty good as a teacher..

why do you have all these fake comments??they dont sound genuine enough..

  • Hey @awpmarshall316, thanks for the compliment but are you suggesting that it was ME that wrote all of these comments? I guess drummers are just very good at sharing their love for each other. Some of the nicest people I know are drummers. Sorry if you think I'm being dishonest :(

  • Thats really usefull, and brilliantly explained !

  • Can you possibly try and teach how to do the beat in the song by "We are Scientists"

    "Nobody move nobody get hurt"

  • this is the groove chad smith does in higher ground

  • A+ brother!

I felt like I have hit a wall with my playing.

You have successfully helped me blow through this wall!

Thanks so much man! Keep it up! Love the video, simplicity, and your delivery!

  • Very well explained and shown man! Simplicity is the best way to explain and practice these things which are so important for a percussionist's arsenal.

    Cheers

  • Good teaching! Can't wait to practice by following what you taught!

  • Let me know how it goes, @vincent0923?

  • This is wonderful. :)

    Thank you so much.

  • Thank you for watching, @xXChuckXxSP!

  • dude if u can't say that there are 3 variations u can make at least 50 just by playing the most basic shuffle and u'll get the hang of it...

  • Nice video

  • very good teaching m8

  • hey thanks a lot! this helps me understand these beats very well ! I got to become good at playing cause Ian Paice and Bernard Purdie are gonna retire soon... Deep Purple may need a drummer :D

  • Let me know how the auditions go, @kidzsanlorenzo! ;)

  • Finally, a face.....learnt alot from your vidz bro!!!

  • He he, it's not a pretty one I'm afraid @plemyk!

  • Thanks!

  • harry potter without glasses

  • I prefer either John Lennon or Noel Gallagher thanks, @jonnyboulanger ;)

  • thanks a lot for this!!

  • This is a great instructional video! You are an ideal drummer teacher and a great drummer. Thank you so much for posting this. This is the only video I found that was clear, concise and thorough . I'm really glad you posted this. What about 16th note triplets? Is it the same hand pattern? Thanks again!

  • One good thing my band director always says is to think "Chew to-bacc-o" as you count a shuffle drum beat.

  • HEY ARE U SURGEO

  • Great. :)

    It helps me, really.

  • you play with 0.5% soul

  • Iv been playing a long while and that is one of the best and most methodical lessons for 'ghosted' shuffles I have seen.

  • No.......... The bird is the word.

  • I have been looking for someone to explain this slowly for ages, Thanks

  • You are an EXCELLENT TEACHER!

  • Absolutely BRILLIANT! I had so many drum teachers show me to mimic my hi-hat shuffle with the snare and the way you showed it was so much easier. I have been wanting to learn the shuffle properly for over 12 years now and I only knew one way to play it . Thanks so much.

  • Finally I understand what a shuffle is THANKS!!!!!

  • Great lesson thanks a lot! Can finally play a shuffle beat now.

  • great lesson

  • The triplet beat that you have written out is in 12/8 time, not 4/4 time. Very nice instructional video, regardless.

  • Hi HannieGirl,

You can write out triplet based rhythms using 4/4 triplets OR 12/8 eighth notes. A bar of triplets in 4/4 (you can see the little number 3 above each grouping) sound and can be counted exactly the same as a bar of 12/8 for this reason.

Shuffles grooves however are most commonly notated using 4/4 triplets. Drum grooves that play ALL three triplet based partials on the right hand are most commonly written in 12/8.

Hope this clears this up for you and thanks for the compliment!

  • @hanniegirl202 they're triplets. 12 triplets= 4 beats. 4/4 time

  • yes! very nice!

bin playin a few months, this should be nice to try :)

  • Playing anything triplet based is great practice when you're starting out!

  • I agree @EmilAhlback. There are basically two types of rhythm in this world - straight and/or swung. We spend most of our time playing in straight time and sometimes forget about our old friends the triplets.

  • Really nice lesson going to try this, thankyou :).
