When I was a child I had a Mega Drive, a Master System III and a SNES. I used to play mostly my snes, but Sonic aways owned Mario, to me. Haha

Given that their primary mode of attack is to jump on the head of their enemy, I think Sonic being covered in spines gives him a bit of an advantage in that regard. That and the just insane speed. Though, I'd imagine Mario is physically tougher.

As far as the games goes, the 2D games are about identical in quality, despite their similarities and differences. The 3D games... not so much. Aside from the Sonic Adventure games, the rest of the 3D Sonic games just don't hold up to 3D Mario titles.

Sonic and Mario are not comparable. They don't have the same kind of adventure. Mario explorers every nook and Cranny, sonic speeds past everything. SEGA had an exploring game, ALEX Kidd in Miracle World, Nintendo then put some of the best things similar to Alex Kidd inside Mario 3: Over world Map, inventory gadgets, etc. Sega then stopped progressing Alex Adventures. So only one nice Alex Kidd game was made IMO and that cannot compete with tons of Mario games

I see it this way: Sonic looks way cooler and more bad ass than a fat plumber who fits the cliche Italian stereotype, but I really love just about every Mario game that i ever played; Sonic games went down hill after the Dreamcast, or maybe a little bit afterwards. I like the character of Sonic, but i also like the games with Mario in it (every character in any form of media has their faults). At least that's my take on the debate; i can't really choose one definite character...I choose Link!
