  • Are the stitches the same size on the back, as on the front? I get really tiny on the back, but larger on the front. I really have a tough time with this. This is very clear. THANKS!

  • @bikrgran The stitches are typically much smaller on the back.

  • i like your video very much!!! i studied hand quilting a few years ago, but i didn't have a quilt in progress then, i was just studying the process. but now i have my finished quilt top, and last night i was on my hands & knees pinning backing, batting & quilt top together, and now i'm ready to hand quilt!!! so your video has been a great refresher for me!!! haha! and i LOVE your analogy to building a curved fence! that makes so much sense in my brain!!!

  • @misfitknits Thanks! I'm always glad when this helps someone out! Good luck with your project!

  • So what type of frame do you use for a bed quilt?

  • @missmorgan04 You can use the same size hoop. Even with the 42" square quilt only a small portion of it is in the hoop at a time. Or you can get a big quilting frame that you sit at like a table, but it takes up a ton of space (as much as a big table does).

  • How big is that quilt?

  • @missmorgan04 The quilt is 42 inches square.

  • Thank you so much for this video! I had no idea what I was doing---this is completely different than what I was attempting, and now I'm able to make such tiny stitches. SO thankful you posted this. Thanks a lot!!

  • @mkorton1 You're welcome!!

  • Extremely clear explanations of each motion: thank you! I have trouble keeping all 3 layers on the tip of my needle AND keeping the stitch small. I think your explanations about the 3 thimbles will help: also the action of the thumb on the back. So appreciate the time you took to help us "newbies."

  • Thank You ! I just read "The Winding Ways Quilt", a novel by J. Chiaverini. She talks about hand piecing and of course handquilting. I am a new quilter in search of info about using a hoop, which I have. Never expected to find quilting on YOuTube, but it makes perfect sense. Instruction was very helpful. Now to practice.....

  • Excellent instructions. Thanks

  • I appreciate you explaining about not having your fabric in the hoop too tight...I think that has been one of my problems! And thank you for explaining how to use your bottom thumb to push the needle back up while using your top thumb...these are the tips we newbies need! Blessings!

  • Excellent instruction. This is just what I needed. :-) Thanks!!

  • I love this video, thank you! I took a hand quilting class from an award winning and even published quilting teacher...but she didn't elaborate much on the rocking stitch and I left feeling a bit like I still couldn't hand quilt correctly. This has really helped me! Thanks! ;)

  • There are probably all kinds of books on hand quilting patterns, but you can play off the quilt design, or designs in the fabric as well. Traditional hand quilting for quilts with lots of small pieces typically involved quilting within each small piece of fabric, about 1/4" in from the seam lines. In this way you emphasize the quilt design, while avoiding quilting across any of the seams where the fabric is going to be much bulkier and harder to stitch through. It's up to your imagination!

  • Thanks soo much for posting this vid. I've been trying to find instructions on how to do this for a while. Question: how do you decide on a pattern in which to quilt? Do you just play off the design in the fabric? or is there a book of patterns that can be traced? Thanks again!

  • This series is so helpful. Thank you for the detailed explanations!

  • i really love this and i cant wait to get started. thank you so much
