I would love to have some exotic pets, but a hippo is just too damn big. Plus, they don't have fur so they're not really cuddly. I prefer to stick with more of the safe exotic animals as pets like clouded leopards, wolverines and red pandas. Any wild animal is dangerous but as long as I keep a 44 magnum handy I can take down any of the wimpier wild pets. For a hippo need a damn cannon or bazooka. That is simply too bulky to bother with for me.

there's so much more to this story people should know! jessica isn't a baby, she's been with them for 10 YEARS. for the first 8, she spent time with other wild hippos who live in her area of the river, and she was free to come and go just as they are. the fences mentioned in the video weren't put up to keep jessica in, but to keep people OUT - idiots heard about her or saw her on tv and kept sneaking around trying to "swim with her." she IS still a wild animal, and her "family" respects that!

I think it would be hard to raise an animal to be wild once a person decides to be it's care giver because if they raised it to be wild and didnt give it any affection or handling, it would be an even greater danger for the people just trying to take care of the animal. As for the hippo specifically, I think their behavior is a little too unpredictable and they grow to be a little too large to live harmoniously with humans.

Its great what they did for her, but they should of raised her to be the wild animal she is. No matter how much love and how "tame" she seems to be...she IS still a wild animal and she can decide to be that wild animal in a split second. I think she showed this the most when she cracked the camera at the end.

Everyone thinks its cute and great what they are doing until someone gets hurt then its the animal that gets blamed. She should be raised to go back to the wild, not be their pet. jmho

I totally agree with you there Bella. That is indeed a wild animal regardless of the size/age. Instead of keeping her as a house pet, they should give her to a wild life sanctuary so that she could be properly cared for and live as she should out in the open instead of like she is now. There spoiling her too much to where she'll soon become dependent on humans for a food source. And you don't want to do that to an animal. They wont survive in the wild.

It probably would have been more ethical to bring her up wild, BUT she might live longer being adopted, so maybe it's a case of weighing up the risks. If the two people owning it protect other people (electric fencing), and if it's one of them that gets hurt then they knew the risks. So I guess it's not a black and white debate.
