Fool. Capitalism is still new and has plenty of opportunity to fail. And communism didn't fail, the Soviet Union did. So-called capitalist nations incorporate many socialist policies. Things shift all the time, and we can move away from such extreme centralized authority in which the vast majority of people are exploited daily.

Though, you're right that many "capitalist" nations use socialist policies. Pure capitalism works about as well as pure communism. Which is, of course, to say that it doesn't work very well at all.

What videos like this leave out is that the trash bins they get their food from also have broken glass, rotten food, floor sweepings, spit, used tissues, and GOD knows what else in it, making the food they eat way unsanitary. I catch these freegans all the time and laugh at them outside my store.

Homeless people in New York don't do it because they think it's gross and get money by panhandling. However, every time I've ever gathered a cart of food, I pass out as much as I can to homeless people I pass on the way home. One old lady (whom I gave food to several nights in a row) had tears streaming down her face and said "God bless you!" Didn't tell her where it came from, though.

Think about what you're saying. Someone that is homeless and has no job has all day to look for food. If they were getting food out of those dumpster it would be long gone before the these guy got off work to look for it.

This video is only about pre-consumer waste. We waste a lot more food than what is shown. Years ago, I heard US consumers waste about 1/3 the food they buy. Don't know if that's still true. Also, it's not true that the US FDA prohibits sale of "expired" food. A local dollar store will still sell candy that is past its "best date".

the Food and Drug administration says that any food past it's expiration must be destroyed, or thrown away.. something to that extent. This is why grocery stores can't donate it. I'm sure this law made slightly better sense when it was written, in the days before food preservatives. Unfortunately, a large majority of Americans are wasteful people... but not all.

so long as capitalism exists, based on the obscene and inefficient overproduction of goods which doesn't care if resources are wasted as long as profit is made, so long as such a model, anti-human to the degree that excess food is trashed rather than given to the poor, allows certain countries to have so much that extra food is wasted while most of the rest of the world starves trying to export raw materials and cash crops to the rich exploiters, may everyone think and act more like freegans.

A lot of freegans share their food with the homeless through Food Not Bombs events. Here in Sarasota they share dinner every friday night in a downtown park with about fifty homeless people.

This is wonderful. Normally only gutter punks and those of us who chill with them know about this shit. Glad to see more people are catching on. At the end of the school year the dumpster outside of dorms in my town get so full that stuff is just put next to them. I go every year with a truck and get designer clothing, art supplies, bedding still in it's plastic...you name it, they throw it out.  Amazing.
