  • sounds like the German anthem

  • Comment removed

  • Haydn first wrote a hymn for the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation.

Later he took this hymn as basic theme for this string quartett.

When he wrote the hymn in 1897, there was no Austrian Emperor, as there was no Austrian Empire.

There was the Archduchy of Austria part of the Holy Roman Empire, and Archduke Francis of Austria was also the elected Emperor of the whole HRE.

As Haydn called it the emperor hymn, it's obviously ment for the emeror of the HRE not the Achduke of Austria.

  • correction: not 1897, 1797.

During the Napoleonic wars Austria declared itself an Empire in 1804, Archduke and Emperor of the HRE Francis II named himself now Emperor Francis I, to show, that with the new Austrian Empire starts a new count of emperors.

In 1806 the HRE was officially dissolved, but Francis kept the Hymn for his new Empire.

1841 Hoffmann v. Fallersleben wrote new lyrics to the melody, "Das Lied der Deutschen" a call for the German states to unite.

  • When Austria changed from Monarchy to Republic in 1918, they obviously couldn't keep a hymn with Lyrics about an Emperor.

As Germany also had a hymn about their emperor, sung to the melody of today's english national hymn, they needed something new too.

So in Germany the "Lied der Deutschen" was made the official hymn in 1922.

  • The nazis misused the first verse "Germany over all" as a sign of national supremacy, while the original intention of that line in 1841 was an appeal to unite all German states.

Meanwhile Austria couldn't use the same hymn, as the victory powers after WWI forbid with the treaty of St. Germain a unfication of Austria and Germany, after the first democratic Austrian Republic constitution called the country German-Austria and had a clear Intention for an unification.

  • After WWII the melody stayed the same in Western Germany, while Eastern Germany got a new hymn.

Because the nazis misused the first verse and also because the geographical borders of Germany in this verse weren't correct any-more, the western German federal President and Chancellor decided in an official note, that the 3 stanza of the "Lied der Deutschen" should be the only sung version of the hymn.

  • 1990 in the same way the hymn and the 3. stanza was declared the official hymn of the re-united Germany.

  • Lovin' it :)

  • youtube is for watching videos. its not called youARGUE now is it.?got an opinion about my comment? good for you. keep it to yourself and enjoy the music.

  • Wrong everybody here, was the Habsburg monarchy hymn, since 1798. Franz Joseph Haydn, composed this music for Emperor Franz I Holy Emperor and first Emperor of Austria (1805). "Gott erhalte, Gott beschütze unsern Kaiser, unser Land". The music was used by the German revolutionaries in 1848, and they just change the lyrics and created the "Deutscher Lied" Only used after WW1 by the Weimar Republic and then by Hitler and by the Bundesrepublik now.

  • @GrafvonPlanken07 No, but the closest yet. It was the Hohenzollern/Hapsburgh monarchy of Francis II (Franz II) and was used in Prussia after Bismarck declared it Germany and in Austria untill 1918, then again in Austria in 1936 after the Anchlusss absorbed Austria into the "Greater German Reich" The piece was originally thought of as a defiance of French threats against Austria-Hungary and Prussia.

  • My only question is:

If I attended a performance of this work, would it be proper etiquette to stand while this movement is played even though it was not originally intended to be used as a national anthem?

  • OSTERREICH

  • FIRST OF ALL... If Americans want to talk bad about Germans then they should trace their family history. I am of German descent, as are most people who are aware of their heritage. Having said that.. why is there a picture of George Washington for this video? haha jk

  • F.J. Haydn va ser seny i saviesa, saber fer, bones formes, composicions exquisides... Els seus quartets de corda assoleixen la perfecció, però també tota la seva obra. Fantàstic! Romàntic nocturn.

  • The Musik is so lovely!

  • @stevenm820

"Then, in the 1930's, Hitler, who was Austrian, decided to make this tune the national anthem of Germany"

    OMG

  • Life is short. we must not be wasting it fighting over outr countries. just relax and listen to the music.

Das Leben ist kurz. dürfen wir nicht vergeuden es im Streit um outr Ländern. einfach nur entspannen und Musik hören.

    now we can both understand.

  • Herzlichen Dank from Croatia-Dubrovnik.

  • Wir haben das nicht gewust!

  • Rip Prince Otto

  • There´s something wrong here, This is German Anthem, and Haydn was Austrian. This shouldn´t be austrian anthem????

  • @mentorgratis Haydn wrote this string quartet in 1797. The second movement became the national anthem of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. At the end of World War I in 1918, the Austro-Hungarian Empire was dissolved. The new nation of Austria did not use this anthem. Then, in the 1930's, Hitler, who was Austrian, decided to make this tune the national anthem of Germany. They wrote new lyrics. After WWII, neither East nor West Germany used this as its anthem, until after they were unified.

  • @stevenm820 i cant even begin to tell you how wrong you are. hitler didnt make this the national hymn. it was germanys national hymn since the early 20s. and west germany has never stopped using it. only the eastern part was forced to use a different hymn.

is it so hard to read up on history before telling other people incredibly wrong things.

  • @mentorgratis

Who cares, Germany, Austria or the German speaking part of Switzerland, it is all German culture

  • @chrisblueworld I think the Austrian would be pissed of if they read this comment^^

  • @MrGabbapiet

The Austrians are pissed of at a lot of things. ;-)

  • Does anyone know the font of writing at 0:03?

  • In the right frame of mind, this could evoke tears.

  • Love to here the anthem of my home country! :)

  • Violin concerto.........

  • Great piece. Is it just me or can you hear one of the players breathing?

  • @itamar82 Highly unlikely. The audio quality back in the 1700's-1800's was very poor and couldn't pick up on the subtle breaths of a player.

  • Godlike.

  • i know how to play it on the french horn

    such a great composer.....Beautiful

  • I'm learning to play this. So pretty. :)

  • elryan1982 Ignoring the 'fucking stupid' bit, if you can keep your lederhosen dry and re-read the comment made by me, I'm sure you will discover that it implies no criticism of Haydn whatsoever -- unless, of course , one is -- what did you call me?. . .

  • the most wonderful anthem in the world...

  • @sebreathnach You have absolutely no idea of history. Please, would you mind to shut the fuck up?

  • @sebreathnach i too am an atheist. i too despise fascism. but to criticize a beautiful piece of music because it reminds you of things the composer had nothing to do with is pretty fucking stupid.

  • Comment removed

  • @sebreathnach You have the most warped understanding of Fascism I've ever seen. There's nothing Christian about a political system where the "Leader" is worshiped. Communism and Nazism have that and much more in common, the differences are superficial in nature but I digress. A true Christian values human beings, as they are all made by, and in the image of, the same creator. There are fake Christians to be sure, but Nazism, Fascism, and Communism were/are equally Atheist my friend.

  • @gdbalck In fact, Fascism rather is a religious system in itself and thus naturally opposed to other religions, though I'd also disagree with the proposal that a "true Christian values human beings". Think of Cromwell.

  • @LestatxLouis1 Religious does not equal Christianity sir. Additionally, do you know what the central tenet of Christianity is?

    Allow me to enlighten you:

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

    Matthew 22:37-39

A faithful follower of Christ adheres to the above.

  • @gdbalck And that is what so many Christians claim to base their lives upon--whilst in fact I had to see oftentimes that their true beliefs, or rather their deeds, have next to nothing to do with it. Accuse me of hypocrisy--but if we do assume that Christianity, or any faith for that matter, is not defined by its scriptures but rather by its believers, as any faith is primarily based on its followers and changes accordingly, what they call "Christianity" has nothing to do with Jesus anymore.

  • @LestatxLouis1 You're applying simplistic logic to something that is beyond your grasp, given your answers. If you understood, you'll realize that this is a fallen world, that no human being will ever be perfect. That however shouldn't stop us from aspiring to do good and to serve our fellow man.

Let me ask you this, do you know every Christian on Earth? Was mother Theresa a Christian? Speaking out of ignorance doesn't reflect well upon your character.

    Good day

  • @gdbalck It should not, indeed. However, it does. I do not need to know every single "Christian" on earth (the mother Theresa argument, BTW, not exactly doing your cause much good) - I can simply look around myself, absorb all the information offered to me from as many causes as possible. One can naturally not know every "Christian"--and thus one must base ones assumptions on those one knows. Naturally the result will be biased to a degree, but it is best one can get. Religion=Believers.

  • Very nice - thanks for sharing!

  • Thank you for this illuminating insight. I had no idea this piece of music had such poignant origins. Thank you for posting it.

  • Such a beautiful piece of music. Thanks for sharing.

  • Deutschland, Deutschland über alles, über alles in der Welt...!

I'm English and still I can't help loving this...

    VIVA EUROPA

  • @NilSatis1983

Alright... but Deutschland über alles? Nein danke.

History has taught how that would end.

  • @Vleertouwer Not really, the war was 60 years ago, move on. And look at the Germans now, single-handedly manufacturing the entire Eurozone through the toughest world economy ever!

  • Oh god, do you really think Germany is the only one putting the Eurozone through this economic crisis? No. they might have spent much money on it, but they're also the ones who whine the most about it. because percentagewise they're not the biggest spenders.

I'm not saying that Germany is not playing an important role in European economy, but the role that they play is no key role in the first place.

Germany is a great place, don't get me wrong, but no need to let them rule the world.

  • But this is the German national anthem?

  • I prefer heavyier music and i still love this song (i play it on my trumpet)

  • si belle, mon Dieu je peux l'ecouter tout de la journee! so beautiful my god i could listen to it all day long. so shon, mein Got ich kann ganzen Tag es horen! besides ich bin le polonais et je ne sais pas si I have ii written corectly... cheers and fuck you all. je vous aime meine bruder und sours

Zachovej nám, Hospodine die Böhmen usw. usw.

    . usw. ist lang her

  • This really is a beautiful piece of music. However, I'm not so sure I agree with JLjuju. Holland has a very beautiful national anthem!

  • Deutschland Deutschland uber alles, uber alles in der Welt, Eingeheit und Rechts und Freiheit. ich glaube es ist wirklich sehr schoen

  • whys it in A major??

  • i lvoe this, it gets stuck in my head so easily, and i can remember the main sound and melody of it by ear, so simple yet elegant and beautiful

  • Haydn's finest.... however Germany's anthem has a very fast tempo which makes it less soothing.

  • soothing .........

  • @JLjuju

Thanks. But why came this kommentar not from a german people. I like zhe Hollands, greathings from far germany

  • I'm Dutch, but I gotta admit that Germany has the most beautiful national anthem of the world

    Ade! Ade! Ade!

    Es geht um Deutschlands gloria,

    Gloria, gloria !

    Sieg Heil, Sieg Heil Viktoria

    Sieg Heil Viktoria

  • soothing!

  • Classical Music creates tranquility, while half of the modern music focuses on violence and agression. Whats next?

  • ceci est si beauiful et relâcher

  • This is so beautiful!!!

    (a Luxembourger)

  • Deutschland! Deutschland, Uberalles... And it took 27 million Russians to put paid to that myth...

  • is this really in c???

  • well, actually, this movement itself is in G Major, but the quartet that this movement came from is overall in C.

  • Nobody should down the Fatherland. Praise Germany.

  • No one should down anyone or any country.Give praise where praise is due. Unfortunately, the world is not perfect, so let's take it easy and enjoy the Musik

  • Beautiful music, great country all agreed, but can we leave politics behind and just enjoy the music. I am sure Hayden would be pleased to know that his music is being appreciated by people all over the world. Thank you for this wonderful music, yes Germany is a great country and I am not German or Austrian

  • @jaygees100 thank you for your kind words!

  • There's not much to be said here, among this heap of verbal twaddlel, and, perhaps, nothing should be mentioned. Think, however, of this: part of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, along with the words from the Ode to Joy(Freude Schoner Gotterfunken)by the German poet, Friedrich Schiller, became the national anthem of the European Union. Does that make every European a German?(sic)Or do the European steal more tunes than Americans or Canadians or Russians?(Sic)Yes, think about it.

  • Blühe im glanze dieses Glückes, blühe deutsches Vaterland!

    Proud to be german!

  • This is the beauty of life, and Music, the creation of man and God in Harmony believing in ever lasting life, with the most magnifisant peices of existance together in one peice of art.

  • Österreich ist Deutschland nicht.

  • What the ----- are you talking about

  • Just a great tune. I'm impressed.

    Haydn was a man!

  • Simply beautiful.

  • Pretty =)

  • So, did Hayden write the German anthem, or did the Germans steal it and add lyrics? O.o

  • Haydn was Austrian.

  • what was his language?

  • @sonnet43

There not really was an Austria at this time, and no Germany too... so you all wrote bullshit.

  • Yes, both the Austrian and German anthems are based on this theme by Haydn :) He composed this during the Napoleonic wars and dedicated it to Emperor Francis I.

  • @gdbalck At the time of its creation, he was still Holy Roman Emperor Francis II. It was not until a few years later that the Holy Roman Empire was dissolved and he instead adopted the title of Emperor Francis I of Austria. ;)

  • @PPAChao Ah yes, very true. He dedicated it originally to a Hungarian noble. Thanks for the correction :)

  • @PPAChao no acctually he was still emperor of the holy roman empire when he was coroned to the emperor of austria it was napoléon who made him dissolve the holy roman empire..

  • @gdbalck who was the austrian emperor!

  • Comment removed

  • Steal is a harsh word. They used a great piece for a great country. :)

  • Hi, i was wondering if someone could answer something for me. I know this is gonna sound stupid to those who know, but what does "Op." stand for in a song title? (Concertino, Op. 107, in this case). Thanx^^

  • Op. is short for Opus.

The word 'opus' means 'work'. Each piece a composer writes is given an opus number - either by him, or by someone who later put them in mainly chronological order. Sometimes the organizers use their OWN system - which is why you get K (Koechel) number for Mozart, D (Deutsch) numbers for Schubert, etc.

  • Well that clears things up. Thanks so much!

  • One more note - in Latin, the plural of opus is opera... Makes sense now, doesn't it =)

  • awesome

  • What a man he must have been.

  • I award this 3 ESTERHAZYS...as in spite of lyrical and affectual intent....the mechanical approach which you take destroys most of the gestural interest,(and the gestures themselves)THIS GOES ON MY HAYDN AS A SUBLIMELY FRAGRANT THUNDER MUG PLAYLIST
