  • wow.....not great...not great at all. sorry CZJ, not sure you "got" it

  • just watch bernadette peters do this. her performance stopped the show. she truly is an actress who sings. i've only seen a handful of perfomances as strong in 40 years of going to the theater.

  • is she watching some tennis match while singing this song......LOL

  • So what if she moves her head a lot? It was still an amazing performance, and the poor girl was probably dying of nerves inside.

  • This wasn't CZJ best but believe me I have seen worse.

  • that's because she used Judy dentch as a protege instead of taking it from Judy Collins

  • this is so bad...

  • Really love her ,great looking pom.

  • what's up with the head movements?

  • To much head movement. I thought she would have been better than that.

The voice is okay but it's not about the voice, it's about the emotion of the situation she finds herself in. She didn't seem to feel it.

  • I didn't like her Tony Performance but saw her in a normal performance and thought she was lovely.

  • CZJ, shut up already

  • The movements of her head are excessive...Her acting is pretentious...Not real at all...

  • Well, she DID have a cold... she was sick or something.

I still can't stand her, though. She was so pretentious in her speech. UGH.

  • Will someone please explain to me why she is constantly twitching her head? And why she said "Where are the cRowns?"?

  • she was on the verge of tears at the end. But I didn't like the head moving

  • She sounds like an extremely heavy smoker!! How did she win the tony????????

  • Not only sick, but trying to smoke in the dressing room before her performance.

  • I just don't know how to feel about all the head movement she's got going on :(

  • I saw her at the beginning of the run and sat in the 6th row center. She so overacted the song that I could hardly understand many of the words. I adore her but this performance was misdirected and the entire production doesn't rate with some of the marginal summer stock productions of ALNM I have seen through the years.

  • as much as i like her in this role, this was a TERRIBLE tony performance. The Vuvuzela button makes this better

  • It's like she's channeling Norma Desmond. Pretty horrible.

  • question, why didn't Bernadette Peters come on board when her pal Steven asked her to? check out ALNM's final performance farewell in praise of Angela!

  • Difficult to sing while you cry, more difficult to emote in Radio City, and the most difficult part for Catherine had to be singing when she was sick. Add to the mix she showed up to be a part of the Broadway experience not expecting to win, and to pay respect to the pros like Sondheim that invited her. I loved Catherine's Desiree, great chemistry with entire cast! The ALNM CD is perfection and so was Catherine, kudos and welcome to Broadway Catherine!

  • I am so glad people agree. This was a horribly painful performance. Ok, her voice was not in good shape. However, what were those odd facial expressions and the halting reading of the lyric, It's "Aren't we a pair" NOT "Aren't we ....... (look in the other direction).... a pair." Yikes! She won for that????

  • She E-NUN-SEE-ATES poorly. It sounds like she says "Cwons" Terrible. Who was directing that mess?

  • I guess she turned down the vocal coach. Could that possibly be a product of the direction? Jeez... just horribly painful to watch.

  • You don't have to be a singer to play this role well. It is often played by non-singers. I saw Dame Judy Dench play the role in London in the 90's and it was amazing. Heartbreaking. And she mostly didn't sing. She also didn't overact, feign anger, stick her lips out in an exaggerated pout or whip her head around like a freak so she had that going for her as well.

  • she was losing her voice so she wasnt at her best

  • So, how did Christiane Noll not get the Tony up against her? This performance was terrible. I understand she was sick, but that doesn't excuse the atrocious acting!

  • Breathtakingly bad and amateurish; she has no stage chops, she's a film actress, dependent on multiple takes and special effects to make her look good.

  • @chipernie She was a big thing in West End during 90's.

  • did anyone else notice the weird way she moves her head during this song?

  • Her performance on the Tony awards was not the performance she does in the show. Maybe because she was solo here instead of having "Fredrick" to play to, she eay over-emoted this performance as if she had to do something extra here. In the show, her performance is very different, so don't think she is like this every night. She actually does an effective and appropriate reading of it and she is very, very good in this role.

  • @kalmusc I agree.

  • both odd and bad

  • Ugh. Sherie is so much better and way more deserving than CZJ.

  • okay now i hate this performance because it was over done. she was he last person i expected to win the tony.

  • i cant. that was like, tear inducingly bad.

    "neeeeeehhhh...xt year."

i cant even. that was just....I CANT.

  • All that head jerking, what's up with that? Makes me re-evaluate her performance in Chicago, they must have sweetened the track considerably.

  • She's channeling Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond. Ack!

  • She really is bad, why did they give her that part. What a beautiful song to be ruined by that clown.

  • "Me here who what in the what?" 0:20- 0:25

  • Wow. This is atrocious.

  • is it possible to win a razzie and a tony for the same performance? lol

  • Yikes! Wow, she fucking sucks ass. She says she's recovering from being sick??Jesus, if I knew I was going to SING AT THE TONY AWARDS I'd make dam well sure I stayed healthy.

  • I know how bad one can sound when they are sick. However, if you are getting paid copious amounts of money to perform when sick, then I recommend getting your ass in gear and sounding good in order to not embarass yourself or the people paying you said money. Thank God Bernadette is taking over this role. I might go see it now.

  • you've got to remember shes recovering from sickness, hense why during her speech she said her voice is coming back so shed probably be there for tuesday.

  • She's beyond bad.

  • Crooooooooak!

  • Terrible.......a disgrace to Welsh singing!

  • *facepalm* *kills self* There is no hope left.

  • SOOOOOO funny. What is she looking at? a fly in the room?

  • @land411 lol ! love your comment..!thinking of my acting teacher who says "stop looking high when you speak, you re not talking to God !!"

  • God...shes dreadful!

  • Giving herself whiplash?

  • embarrassing.

  • Bloody awful. The people clapping should be ashamed.

    Gays never have good taste.

  • @JewishVegan

    You are a bigot.

  • From the recording and other footage I've seen of her in this role, I really like her performance. However, her performance here for the Tony's is awful. She's wayyyy too big, her eyes almost look crazy, and, like everyone else, the head-whipping was driving me nuts! I think Zeta-Jones has a terrific voice (though I think she's 'singing' it too much here). I've heard she's great in the show, so perhaps it was her nerves...

  • wow that was terrible

  • Such bad phrasing! And super sweaty!

Ironically she sings of losing her timing this late in her career .

  • I think I'll need to watch this again to count how many times she whips her head from side to side.

Me here at last on the ground (0:21-0:25) = 5 times!!!

    You in mid-air = 1 more

We were laughing at how many times she did this thoughout the song. My hubby & daughter were shocked, especially since they're both singers.

  • this isnt horrible but it isnt good...its amateur.

the leads in my musical could sing this ten times better...

    the acting sucks too

  • and to think, bernadette peters will be singing this shortly..

    I WANNA SEE IT!!

  • Atrocious!!!!

  • Please watch Judi Dench performing this. There is no comparison.

  • her singing wasn't great, but this was a powerful performance emotionally. I actually think she did a good job. But yeah, that singing is really not so good.

  • That is just plain horrible. Dang, she should stick to just acting. She just wrecked this beautiful song...

  • It's a shame she was sick and and oversang this song at the tonys. I saw a totally different ( and wonderful) performance of her in the show in previews. She may have been a bit nervous as well since this was one of her dreams of a lifetime. Too bad.

  • Awful, amateur hour crap. Not good enough for the smallest community theater, and all the worse because she pauses and drags it out so self-indulgently. This is not a hard song to sing, people.

Sore throat my ass- she smokes like a oil fire, what the hell does she expect?

Broadway made itself look completely foolish for giving her an award just because she's famous.

  • she BLOWS wtf did she win anything??

  • Terrible. Her voice is all wrong for this song - forget the sore throat - it's her voice and it's does not fit. And that head!!! Overacting for sure.

  • WHY is she moving her head so much STOP IT!!!

  • I praise her for performing last night, even though she clearly had a sore throat. Anyone who saw her acceptance speeah could hear that she was really hoarse.

    I think she deserved it.

  • Just the other day I saw a video of Judi Dench performing the same song and, well...she is certainly no Judi Dench.

  • dreadful

  • Remember in the 2008 Tony's when Patti LuPone blew the fucking house down and won the damned Tony - what a night. That was correct winning and correct performing!! Woop!!

  • @fountainchain126 YESSSS, but Patti brings the house down anytime she opens her mouth.

  • God! She sucked! And she got the TONY!!! This is just to show you how MONEY talks over talent any time.... She just destroy one of Sondheim's most beautiful songs!

  • Are you serious?!!!! She does not have the chops pure and simple and she won the Tony...Broadway then is going to shit!! Go to any rehersal today on Broadway and you will hear beautiful strong talented singers. This is Shit!!

  • She does not deserve to be on Broadway. If I had to sit through her performance I would demand my money back.

  • This is the worst embarrassment of a Tony performance I have ever seen. She reminds me of one of those Hawaiian dolls that people have on their dashboards.

And, no, a musical is not supposed to be performed big. Only BAD musicals are. Acting should be real, regardless of the venue.

  • This is the epitome of bad acting. When I saw it I was laughing, but when she won I just wanted to cry. Her winning the Tony is simply confusing. Her head was bobbing everywhere, she had terrible tension, she couldn't sing, and she was overly dramatic. She should definitely take a couple acting lessons from Judi Dench. Less is more baby- less is more.

  • This was a hideous performance.

But in her defense, a friend of mine said that when he saw her live she was much more relaxed, and she did it beautifully. No Glynis Johns, but still.

...but yeah. She butchered this on the Tonys.

  • I thought this performance was strange and pitiful. Sondheim deserves better.

  • Yea this performance didnt blow me away but I didnt see what the big deal was people said she look possessed.. I dont see that at all... But either way this years Tony Awards Sucked!!!

  • it is a beautiful song....but she kills it...and she cant keep her head stright for 30 seconds...looks like she is all juiced up....

  • Just couldn't hold the camera steady while sitting in a chair??

  • Isn't heeeeet rich?

  • I'm no expert, but I don't think it's as bad as everyone says.

  • I've watche the Tony Awards every year for over 15 years and I've never seen a performance so big and exaggerated. By the way, Bernadette Peters was really sick when they filmed Sunday in the park with George and she was brilliant in it!

  • @magoini Bernadette Peters was even sicker when she performed at the Tony's in '03. And she brought the house down in a controlled, subtle and brilliant performance. She also received one of the longest standing-O's in Tony history. So, yeah, you're right. A stage performance captured on video won't always be so exaggerated...she's CZJ is doing wayyy too much here...

Speaking of Bernadette, she's taking over this role in July!!!!

  • A musical is supposed to be performed big and when filmed and seen on TV it'll seem too big & exaggerated. She did good considering she's ill. The show must go on~

  • Man, looks like FatherTime curb stomped dis brod!

  • great, considering she was ill!

  • It's like she's on crack!!

  • Her performance is as pushed and as phony as her acceptance speech. Ugh!

  • Her head is bobbing ALL over the place...
