Of course they were, the stronger tribes enslaved the weaker. The whiteman bought slaves, that is true, but he did not round up slaves himself. He simply bought them off the Tribal Chiefs who kept slaves for themselves and had slaves to spare. Every culture in history had slaves,British the first to ban it.

In fact, the voting qualifications in Rhodesia were not racial. There were black people who were qualified to vote and white people who weren't. Also, in the bush war, whites and blacks fought and died along side each other. Mugabe's group killed innocent men, women and children in their fight for "freedom", and now he has financially crippled the country. He blames it on sanctions, but Smith was under worse sanctions than him, and fighting a war, and he kept the nation in great shape.

So do I. What is a fact is that the only part of the Zimbabwe economy that worked was white run farms, and now under black rule the fields lie fallow. It is a superb analogy of black ruled Africa in general. The easiest way for Zimbabwe to get an economy going is to restore white farms to their owners.

No it wasn't perfect under Smith but it had a reasonably robust economy, or so I've read, and people were not starving although civil liberties, and to some extent human rights, were not valued highly at all.
That being said I cannot see anything Smith did badly that Mugabe has done better.

what is missing from a lot of this dialog is that Democracy is a West/European idea that has been exported around the world. When it is put into a context (such as Zimbabwe) were it is a totally foreign concept back in the 60's, then 'education' is whats needed.
