My husband did a favor for a friend . The next day he brought him a stack of vinyl's. Had a mint Odetta on Verve and Johnny Cash and The Tennessee Two on SUN...we were like kids at Christmas!
I heard Odetta in 1969 perform as opening act for Neil Diamond. She performed a half hour set that emotionally drained the audience, including a rendition of the song Give a Damn. The next year her opening set at the subsequent Diamond concert was greatly limited. I still get goose bumps thinking about her performances !!!
The most beautiful, soul stirring music I have listened to to date,,,,,,,,,,,I wish I could have known about the wonderful woman with a beautiful voice. May you rest in peace Odetta...You are missed!
@abargle Right on! My mother listened to Odetta when I was a child... I KNOW how lucky I've been. I now collect vinyl records and my Odetta ones are among the most precious. nice to meet a kindered spirit!
Pop music is mostly crap, yes, but there's plenty of good music around still, it's just not promoted thru mainstream channels. If I get on a bus or tram and play some good harmonica in an unusual style, say gypsy or ska, young people are usually the first to speak up and say how good it is, and how surprised they are that a small instrument can be so surprisingly versatile. It's up to us to play for our kids and expose them to good music, especially live stuff, 'cause that's making it real.
@abargle Yeah, but we have web skills to find good music. We don't need to put up with the radio trying to convince us that today's pop is good. There's Creative Commons, for example.
Why do we let people like Beyonce and Christina Aguilera think they are so good when we have this in our history? I'm a woman but I think if I was a man I would be more sexually aroused by this performance than watching those pop tarts! Jesus that woman is sizzling with grace and passion!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love this peformance, she is awesome!!! I love the uniwue ending to Black Woman. She reminds me vocally of Jill Scott. Jill Must have been influenced by her somewhat.
@LAMF1968 you should hear the woody guthrie tribute album with bob dylan..odetta is on that one..it is live and recorded at carnegie hall and hollywood bowl; it's awesome!
This video makes me smile every time I am feeling down. Odetta and Cash were both such pure voices and pure people. The chemistry of friendship is unmistakable between them. I love the way Johnny acts like a little school boy when Odetta gives him a peck on the cheek! :)
I first discovered Odetta when she opened for Neil Diamond in a concert in Wichita, Kansas in '69 or '70.
She did a cover of Paul McCartney's "Every Night" that haunts me to this day since I've moved and lent out albums (the studio version was called "Odetta Sings..." (and a list of artists I can't remember. She released so many albums called "Odetta Sings.....)
She made every song her own; as if the thought and emotion and words and music just came to her at that very moment.
Great clip. I just discovered her a few days ago so I'm still trying to get a handle on how much I like her songs themselves, but I absolutely love the power/feeling in her voice (especially in "Waterboy").
Also, after seeing this I looked up several different versions of "Shame and Scandal" and almost every other version has a completely different set of lyrics from this one. Did they just make up this version/lyric set?
Follow-up to this: I just found/download the Sir Lancelot version from itunes. It has the same lyric set as this. After a little research, I found out that the other version was actually from a guy name Lord Melody, who essentially sampled this as the basis for his song.
I love this, Johnny is so sweet in this clip. I really miss that man, the country music isin't the same anymore and it's never gona be without Johnny. He was so young and good looking here and his voice was a voice of god. R.I.P Johnny, you have a special place in my music heart <3
Truly awesome to watch Odetta & Johnny Cash sing a duet. How young they looked in '69, now in 2009, they've both passed on & left us with musical legacies!
I love the chemistry between Johnny and Odetta and it's obvious they are fans of each other. However, I have to admit I'm not a fan of her musical style or her voice. Still, it was fun to see these two together.
RIP blessed Odetta... I do wish I could have witnessed your greatness while you were here with us and to usher in Obama next month at his inauguration. bless you and Johnny, two greats in their own respects.
The 2nd one is called Shame And Scandal In The Family, was written by a calypso artist who went by Sir Lancelot, in the 40s. It has been recorded countless times. Don't know title to the first one.
