  • My husband did a favor for a friend . The next day he brought him a stack of vinyl's. Had a mint Odetta on Verve and Johnny Cash and The Tennessee Two on SUN...we were like kids at Christmas!

  • Marvelous!!!

  • Beautiful, thanks!

  • The original song is "fort holland calypso" (sir lancelot) shame and scandal in the family is a variation.

  • More stirring than an industrial stirring machine in the largest soup factory in the world.

  • love this video! many many thanks for letting me experience this moment in history!

  • An old hippy turned me on t her when i was 16 and she has been my Momma ever since.

  • I saw Odetta live in Toronto shortly before her passing. It was the most amazig concert I've ever experienced.

  • devastating, beautiful, powerful, compelling, true. The reason why people want to sing.

  • No need to weep for out children, turn them onto Odetta, Nina Simnone, Bob Dylan, etc......

  • I heard Odetta in 1969 perform as opening act for Neil Diamond. She performed a half hour set that emotionally drained the audience, including a rendition of the song Give a Damn. The next year her opening set at the subsequent Diamond concert was greatly limited. I still get goose bumps thinking about her performances !!!

  • I love how she does regal folk songs. So much respect for the voices of the formerly enslaved. Beautiful

  • Oh, my... Respect...

  • Amazing.

  • I have tears in my eyes. Simply wonderful!!!

  • The most beautiful, soul stirring music I have listened to to date,,,,,,,,,,,I wish I could have known about the wonderful woman with a beautiful voice. May you rest in peace Odetta...You are missed!

  • Johnny and Odetta. God bless 'em!!!

  • Just noticed how much Odetta looks like Buddy Miles...

  • 12-29-10 Yes...Odetta is a treasure and will always be remembered. Born in Dec. and passed in Dec. but with us always.

  • O_O

    Odetta.

    Just so stunning and amazing.

Even Johnny Cash can't contain his giddiness around her!

    Beautiful!!!!!!!

  • is there a recording out where odetta sings "black woman"? can't find it.

  • Thiese two are personalities, they are not streamlined, and they are not shallow!!!!

    Absolutely Fantastic number and clip!!!!

  • it doesn't get any better than this!

  • jesus what she does with her voice blows my mind away!

  • Awesome, and any other word that applies here! What is it like to really, REALLY feel songs like this? So good, so good....

  • Pop music today is crap. I weep for our children...

  • @abargle Right on! My mother listened to Odetta when I was a child... I KNOW how lucky I've been,

  • @abargle Right on! My mother listened to Odetta when I was a child... I KNOW how lucky I've been. I now collect vinyl records and my Odetta ones are among the most precious. nice to meet a kindered spirit!

  • @abargle Look beyound chart music then....

  • Pop music is mostly crap, yes, but there's plenty of good music around still, it's just not promoted thru mainstream channels. If I get on a bus or tram and play some good harmonica in an unusual style, say gypsy or ska, young people are usually the first to speak up and say how good it is, and how surprised they are that a small instrument can be so surprisingly versatile. It's up to us to play for our kids and expose them to good music, especially live stuff, 'cause that's making it real.

  • @abargle Yeah, but we have web skills to find good music. We don't need to put up with the radio trying to convince us that today's pop is good. There's Creative Commons, for example.

  • @abargle Oh lord, I got chills and can't help but weep or swoon or something, deeply impacted by this voice.

  • Why do we let people like Beyonce and Christina Aguilera think they are so good when we have this in our history? I'm a woman but I think if I was a man I would be more sexually aroused by this performance than watching those pop tarts! Jesus that woman is sizzling with grace and passion!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @LordGuinness

You are so right and i agree she is the bomb when it comes to pure raw talent.

  • My favourite Voice in this world.

God bless you Odetta, rest in peace in your death the kind of peace youve brought me in life.

    Love Jeff Taylor (stimmefrisstfeuer)

  • JUST BEAUTIFUL!

  • I love how Odetta sings her songs with feeling and story like...

  • If it wasn't for Youtube, I'll probably not had a chance to listen to her. Heard about her often but didn't expect her to be this good.

  • Amazing!

  • WOW! What a unique voice.

  • Odetta was and is amazing.

  • man this gives me goosebumps!

  • Fine Song Odetta and Johnny!

  • When Janis Joplin was first discovered she was imitating Odetta. so said Janis Joplin.

  • My Parents John and Bernie Egan sang all this stuff. They have their own Page on Myspace as well

  • wow youtube. such great things I can watch for free that I don't think I could find in any other places.... Her intro gave me chills over and over.

  • Charyzmatyczna

  • Love this peformance, she is awesome!!! I love the uniwue ending to Black Woman. She reminds me vocally of Jill Scott. Jill Must have been influenced by her somewhat.

  • pffffff ! so GREAT !!! RESPECT !! LOVE LOVE LOVE ....

  • Now they sing together in an other world...

    I love them!

  • Listen to Odetta sing "O Freedom". If it doesn't touch you to the core, then nothing will.

  • God Bless them both. They're now both ancestors for both sides.

Thank You Johnny - Love you Odetta!

See you in Heaven some day.

  • Elvis Presley first heard the Bob Dylan song from the album "Odetta Sings Dylan" and later covered the song.

  • What an incredible energy she has!

  • Odetta passed away December '08 .

  • This woman had one of the most phenomenal voices...

The first song she performs is based on a Negro "field blues" song known simply as "Black Woman"...

"Come here and sit on your Daddies knee."

  • Fantastic. Absolutely Fantastic.

  • So wonderful!!

  • Outstanding stuff. Cheers!

  • Can someone tell me the lyrics please I REALLY NEED THEM!!!!

  • I Just discoverd Odetta this week . man I have tears in my eyes , this is so badass .

I want to jam with Odetta and Johnny in Heaven .

  • @LAMF1968 when?

  • @LAMF1968 you should hear the woody guthrie tribute album with bob dylan..odetta is on that one..it is live and recorded at carnegie hall and hollywood bowl; it's awesome!

  • How nice. I think Odetta was really enjoying herself with Johnny.

  • WOW! Amazing. We are lucky to see this.

  • She did an album with Harry Belefonte. You need to Here that

  • Uau, thak you for this, man! That first performance just pierced me right through. No nothing, no no one quite like her.

  • this is a real treat.

  • thank you for posting!

  • Oh my god! Qhen she begans singing....it just make me shiver....

She was a genius, she expressed so much....got no words.

Odetta+ Cash = too much! When they were not singing, is so funny how they giggle like kids.

    Amazing vid.

  • * Ring my Bell*

    ahhaha

  • Es increíble que ahora debamos soportar el reggeaton, eso no es música. Esto lo es!

  • hermoso... realmente una voz maravillosa

  • This video makes me smile every time I am feeling down. Odetta and Cash were both such pure voices and pure people. The chemistry of friendship is unmistakable between them. I love the way Johnny acts like a little school boy when Odetta gives him a peck on the cheek! :)

  • AMAZING! AMAZING!

  • what a voice!!!!!!! love her

  • Okay.

I first discovered Odetta when she opened for Neil Diamond in a concert in Wichita, Kansas in '69 or '70.

She did a cover of Paul McCartney's "Every Night" that haunts me to this day since I've moved and lent out albums (the studio version was called "Odetta Sings..." (and a list of artists I can't remember. She released so many albums called "Odetta Sings.....)

She made every song her own; as if the thought and emotion and words and music just came to her at that very moment.

  • its a trinidad calypso standard

  • Great voice - pity she has passed on as well.

  • Thank You!

  • Wow, what a find! I got to see her perform in 2000 and I felt just as giddy. Her authority/power when she sings is mesmerising.

  • beautiful !

  • Great clip. I just discovered her a few days ago so I'm still trying to get a handle on how much I like her songs themselves, but I absolutely love the power/feeling in her voice (especially in "Waterboy").

Also, after seeing this I looked up several different versions of "Shame and Scandal" and almost every other version has a completely different set of lyrics from this one. Did they just make up this version/lyric set?

  • Follow-up to this: I just found/download the Sir Lancelot version from itunes. It has the same lyric set as this. After a little research, I found out that the other version was actually from a guy name Lord Melody, who essentially sampled this as the basis for his song.

  • Great, great, great! I LOVE them both!!!

  • like butter...ahh. why don't we have voices like this today? and if we do where are they?

  • I love this, Johnny is so sweet in this clip. I really miss that man, the country music isin't the same anymore and it's never gona be without Johnny. He was so young and good looking here and his voice was a voice of god. R.I.P Johnny, you have a special place in my music heart <3

  • Truly awesome to watch Odetta & Johnny Cash sing a duet. How young they looked in '69, now in 2009, they've both passed on & left us with musical legacies!

    RIP Odetta & Johnny Cash!

  • i love this video! thank you so much.

  • This is great.

  • I love the chemistry between Johnny and Odetta and it's obvious they are fans of each other. However, I have to admit I'm not a fan of her musical style or her voice. Still, it was fun to see these two together.

  • shut up you nieve idiot. what a proper uneducated proper knob!

  • I love how at ease they seem to be with each others company! Greatness!!!!!!

  • WOW would you look at that chemistry!?

looks like they are the ones bringing some shame and scandal hah =P

    RIP odetta and johnny!

  • What a gentleman Mr. Cash is. Odetta looked truly flattered at his complements, and he looked truly honored to have her as a guest and sing with her.

  • RIP

  • RIP blessed Odetta... I do wish I could have witnessed your greatness while you were here with us and to usher in Obama next month at his inauguration. bless you and Johnny, two greats in their own respects.

  • the good stuff

  • The 2nd one is called Shame And Scandal In The Family, was written by a calypso artist who went by Sir Lancelot, in the 40s. It has been recorded countless times. Don't know title to the first one.

  • Aren't both o'them fantastic? Thanks for sharing!

  • i love his laugh!!

    Thanks 4 Posting!!

    H@NN@H

  • He was clearly beside himself to be performing with her. Johnny Cash...and he was GIGGLING with glee.

    That's how amazing Odetta was.

RIP Johnny and Odetta. The world is a little more grey for the lack of you.
