When I first heard this song/album in 1985, it was a lil strange to hear ZZ Top doing dance music with heavy synth's cuz it was such a long ways from the blues/rock that they were known for but I think they pulled it off quite well & Velcro Fly is still a kick ass song even after all these years.
ZZ really started getting from their roots with Eliminator, and went over the top with this record. Gone were the raw blues and in were the slick overdubs and techno sounding stuff. I miss the old ZZ!
why do they show zz danceing and crap but they don't show billy gibbons playing the guitar solo in fact you don't ever see a guitar in the whole video except the bass guitar
Yeah! I was reading the waste lands last night and I got to the Lud part where Eddie said the drumming reminded him of Velcro Fly. Thats the very reason I just looked up this song xD
i was wondering as i searced this song if there was gonaa be anyone else just listening cause the Dark Tower. aparently evry person whos ever wached this video
I'm in the middle of Dark Tower III at the moment (third read through and that is the truth) and I've finally decided to find out how this goes. Now if King had used Sharp Dressed Man as the soundtrack to a post-apocalyptic firefight... THAT would've been a surreal image...
I am ALSO checking this because of reading the Dark Tower series... I am familiar with ZZ Top though, just not this song. I think it's kinda funny that King chose this song to be played in that wacky place in the book. I guess it's cause the drums are so loud in the first place.
wow... that's funny. I finally decided to see what the drums sounded like on the song because I'm reading The Dark Tower III. They don't make me want to kill, but perhaps if I was living in a wasteland they might. How many people are reading this book right now?
While Geddy Lee is a fantastic arist, I have never seen a double neck bass/lead with Rush. Perhaps I am wrong, (ever been worng? happened to me) But Billy is the king of lead & rhythm playing. But I am not a big Rush fan and I am a big ZZ fan. just personal prefrence.
Ah technicality. I was referring mainly to Geddy's simultaneous superb bass-soloing/keyboarding/singing skill. Actually, I don't remember what your original comment was, and I'm going to dispute the supreme awesomeness of ZZ Top and their basslines because I'd surely lose. (but you gotta admit, some of Lee's are pretty sweet),
Actually I my comment was Not another person in the world could play lead, rhythm and bass all at the same time. Geddy Lee is probably the best at singing and bass I have ever heard. If he has played lead gutar, I'd would love to hear it, because of the bass licks that guy does is so dang good!
Level 42 and Rush are not in the same genre (L42 is funk/rock/jazz) and I believe Mark King has recorded some songs playing lead guitar but their music has more focus on bass sound. And maybe I'm just opinionated but I think Mark has a better singing voice than Geddy...but that's just me! ;)
King's dark tower series inspired me to look this up as well, I'm familiar with many ZZ top songs (I keep several in my Ipod at all times) but his one I didn't know and had to check it out to help visualize King's vision of the city of Lud.
it's a book series from Stephen king. and wow i didnt know everyone listened this song just because of the book...i thaught it was because they actually liked classic rock.
I read somewhere when this came out that Paula Abdul did the choreography for them in this video. LOL! I am totally serious! Whether that was true, that's another story.
That funky little band from Texas brought their gritty asses to the techno 80s and played the game better than those new wave wimps. They sure as hell made MTV fun to watch back then.
So i had to look this up having just read Stephen King's "The Wastelands". the drum beat blares over the speakers in a war-torn city, driving the people on to keep fighting.
Wow, I miss the 1980s. What a different time that was- no credit crisis, no War on Terror, much less tension in the air. The music was so fun at that time. It was like the music smiled through sound. I miss those days.
uh huh... the sticky stuff they refer to in this song is velcro. And on the song "Pearl Necklace" what they're referring to is an actual necklace made of pearls... can't slide one by you, can we?
ok.. i wanna hear drums from Dark Tower from Lud too xD... but i have a question.. do you remeber some titles of other songs from Dark Tower - i wanna listen this "soundtrack" xD.. now i know only The Beatles - Hey Jude, ZZ Top - Velcro Fly, Rolling's Stones - Paint in Black, Tony Orlando - Knock Three Times
Even being 15 year old girl, (this being my father's account), I've always loved ZZ Top, and have listened to this song. When I came across it in the Dark Tower series, I nearly shit myself with joy. It's those things that makes me love Stephen King. (:
I wonder what ZZ top or Stephen King would say if they knew about this ... surely would make them smile... i only came to hear the drums of LUD but to be honest i did not expect them to be that fast .. in my mind they sounded more like drums from a jungle tribe or even slower and without a rythm..just a constant bum .... bum...
I'm so glad that I'm not the only one here just cos of Stephen King...I'm literally on the page where they first hear the drumbeat and had to find out what it sounded like. Its a pretty good song!
God i envy you for being only there, it's the best saga i've ever read, made me cry several times, i got depressed when i was finished with it, because it was so nice. And the drumbeat really does sound a little scary if not hearing the other stuff
the dark tower books are awsome except for the wizard and glass that one i didnt care for but the one with lud was good "if you dont ask him silly questions he wont play silly games"
Basically, in the book, a computer in the city is fried and it plays this song at about the same time every day. The people don't know, exactly, what it is, so they assume it's war drums played by the Gods, and so they attack each other until the song ends. They think that's what the Gods want them to do. At least that's what I remember. Been a while since I read it.
And to answer a question you were probably about to ask, the book takes place way way way in the future... I think... Probably...
Wow. I came here for the Dark Tower as well. I just finished the third yesterday. Good to see there's plenty of other Dark Tower fans out there. I've never actually met another person who's read any other than people I've forced to read it.
