  • i always thought it was a type of baby talk but it does sound like "it's a good year"

  • "That's a good girl." That's what I always thought.

  • Hmmm........he CLEARLY says;

"Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends...."

  • Also RIP to Iris Adrian, the waitress. She was in a lot of Disney movies, and always played a funny loud boisterous lady. She was great. Also , you can see her on several Lucy Shows in the 50s and 60s, and she was a regular on the Jack Benny Show.

  • Morning dickhead!!!!

  • According to the subtitles: Is she cute?!

  • It sounds more like he's saying "That's a good girl."

  • dagnammit

  • Gunther, I'm just talking to your daddy

    on the telephone.

He's going to the ice-cream store.

He wants to take you with him.

  • @Janglez311 hahaha, oh dennis the menace.

  • Adam Sandler and Kevin James are remaking this movie. I can't wait. They'll put Matthau and Lemmon to shame.

  • @Spartacus217 adam sandler puits all actors to shame, they can't believe he is even allowed to appear on a film screen. they hang their head IN SHAME ! for their profesion

  • @etrax2000 That's a very good joke!

  • @etrax2000 You cant even spell "puts" and "profession"why should anyone take your comment seriously? lool

  • @Spartacus217 Adam Sandler and Kevin James are trash compared to Matthau and Lemmon duo. This remake, if there is going to be a remake, will be in the long list of Failures that Sandler has done for the past 5 years.

  • What are you talking about? That has nothing to do with what I said?

I was explaning to someone else what we said, which was "it's a good yearrrrr."

Not sure where your vintage comment comes into play.

  • Ain't she cute?

  • It's a good year is what he said. This is my favorite Walter Matthau movie.....oh yeh, and Little Miss Marker (1980)

  • itcy goo goooooo...

  • this scene is fuckin hilarious. Lolz. . could u imagine grabbin a big piece of waitress ass and then snickering, i love this era of movies.

  • "It's a good year."

  • that's a good girl

  • lovesbatmans got it right

  • as revealed earlier in the scene, Oscar & the waitress obviously know each other & are quite friendly and flirty with each other...often

  • lol.. wtf.

  • "Isa gu-guooooo!" Hey, it was the sixties. What do you expect.

  • You couldn't get away with grabbing a waitress's butt nowadays. She'd either sue him or mace him!

  • The script said "It's a good yearrrrrr!"

    - as a reference to wine

  • @Kampster32 it meant that the lady was a "VINTAGE" another word for old !

  • @etrax2000 Vintage in this case would mean a classic or delicious...as in "this wine is a good year."

  • @stephanietheteacher I still think he meant that she was a bit "seasoned" but, still had a few years on her" much like a vintage car. No disrespect to the females, but I do believe that that is what he meant..that she may be a bit old but still a good ride.

  • @etrax2000 LOL

  • not sure what he says...but i AM pretty sure that all women love to have their ass squeezed while a guy simultaneously speaks in baby talk

  • they have "high-calorie cream soda" listed on the menu? what a diner...

  • The waitress is played by actress Iris Adrian. She has appeared in quite a few classic movies and tv shows (over 150 acting credits!), and has worked with some of the biggest names in show business including Jack Benny and Lucille Ball

Here she is on The Lucy Show as Hardhead Hogan:

    watch?v=R_EAN5GuwLE

  • @classicphile Thanks for giving her the attention she deserves!!!! What an actress!!!

  • "Isn't she cuu-cuute!"

    (Isn't she cute)

  • he says "Give me a high calorie cream soda"

  • I want a high calorie cream soda! As long as it's a good year, again!

  • ooochee...goo goo...I got plenty of those in my day...umm, well, back in the day.

  • Sexual harrassment in the 60's that you could get away with. Hilarious!

  • he's saying it's a good girl

  • It's a good year! duh

  • you're right. that's what he said

  • He's not saying "she's a good girl" or "its a good year". yeah, the people below make sense..."coochie coo coo" or "agyoo-gyooo". trust me, I know this movie.

  • hes saying coochie coo

  • Agyoo-gyooo

it's a quote from cicero, I think, or Janis Joplin i forget

  • this part is good, but the best is when he is at the ballgame. "are you crazy!!!"

  • Haha, 90 comments for this.

  • i agree, its said in a type of baby talk fasion,

  • well he kind of sais, thats a good girl, but its more of a noise as he pinches her ass

  • he said : ain't she a good girl.

thats the correct trust me.. but he said it in a strange accent.

  • This is clearly dubbed. The audio comes out a fraction of a second before the corresponding lip movements are made. What textfilesdotcom says makes more sense than anything else I've read.

The way it comes out to me is something like "its a good year" and it fits but its a pretty loose fit. The only argument I can make to support it is that Oscar can be held out as a model for someone who lives loose... hehe :)

Its great dialogue all the way through though. Has a radio play ever been done?

  • "If you don't try how are you going to find out?" lol.

  • He's saying: Buy war bonds.

  • "'at's a good girl"

  • he said "it's a good year"

  • R.I.P to both Jack Lemmon & Walter Matthau :(

  • It's like a form of baby talk Itchy coo goo!It is not actual words

  • i thought he said She's a cookie! ol

  • The subtitle on the British DVD says "ain't she cute?" To me it sounds like "Itchycoo GOO"...as a previous viewer noted, babytalk.

  • I think part of the problem is that the line is obviously looped (re-recorded later in a studio), possibly by someone who isn't Matthau, and may have been changed slightly to reflect the notes/requests of either the director of a studio person.

In "Dr. Strangelove", a line by Slim Pickens about "Dallas" was dubbed because Kennedy had been shot there very recently. It can be very weird to see. Same here. Nowadays, they'd either CGI his face or modify his words with much more finesse.

  • @textfilesdotcom: good explanation, I think you're right, but it's still hard to hear what exactly he's supposed to say, I think.

  • lol..hilarious.

Personally, I think it's gibberish. Like if you were pinching someone's...er...cheek, and speaking in baby talk.

    Idga goo GOOOOoo

    that's my opinion....hahaha

  • Pretending he was measuring her up by smacking on her bottom, he says "Its a good year" [as in a bottle of wine].

  • It's a Goodyear! or It's a good year!

  • Yeah, some of the previously posted lines could be.

What I instantly heard is "It's a good year.", but that doesn't make any sense.

Then I think he indeed uses a 'g' on the last word, sooo... not sure. :D

  • "thats a good girl!!!"

  • It's "ain't she cute" look on the Closed Captions

  • "...and if you could, YOOOUUUU."

But I am hard of hearing but thats my vote.

  • "High calorie creme soda."

  • he said; and you can quote me on this:

    "and she COULD HEAR"

because the other guy told him she couldnt hear

  • On the DVD I think it's "Isn't she c-cute?", but I'm not sure..

  • since you have this clip could you please please add the movie

  • As the waitress turns, you can hear a subtle "thud" or what probably what was supposed to be a slap of her butt ... also watch his right shoulder dip as you hear the noise. I'm pretty sure his words are "At's'a good girl" and followed by "If you don't try, how you gonna find out" all seems to make that make sense. But I could be wrong ;)

Oh, also, as a waitress she was standing practically leaning on him as she was writing ... it all makes sense, no?

  • Sounds like, "That's a good girl."

  • he said "it's a good year"

  • "I just had an ice cream....get me a corned beef on rye...all fat and a high-calorie cream soda."

    classic.

  • sounds like, that's a good geal(girl).

  • Why don't you just buy the DVD and put on subtitles?

  • "That's a good girl"

  • It's a good year

  • What he's making sounds of is the same thing you do to a baby to get a laugh, or smile or a reaction from.

  • itch ah goo gueuuu

  • hahahahaha!!! i always crack up at this part! Thanks for posting it--I think I may have misspelled it!

  • Maybe 'It's a good rear!' :D

  • No one rocks more than Walter! Hilarious!

  • Terrible ending!!!

  • I think he is saying, "That's a good girl."

  • Sounds like he says "Its a good year"

  • agree a nod to the cream soda

  • The subtitles say "Ain't she cute?" but he's just saying it in a daft way :)

  • listen all dopey gentiles he says 'aint she cah cuuuuute' the same way u might say 'beeeeyoouuutiful' get it now

  • You could grab ass back then, without some severe styled woman trying to sue ya! They enjoyed it!

  • basically he says something like "itchie-goo-goo" to show off in front of Felix, while he pinches her arse. He definitely does not say "It's a good year" or "It's a good girl" or anything like that. The "If you don't try how are you gonna find out" refers to the arse-pinch, not the food.

  • "It's a good year!"

  • He says "It will kill you" ... he's referring to the fatty meal Oscar just ordered. Oscar then says "if you don't try, how are you gonna find out?" referring to how are you going to find out it will kill you unless you try.

  • I love this movie! I wish this scene was in the play. I know it basically is, but I like it when it's in a diner. Especially when Felix makes those noises trying to clear his ears. Jack Lemmon was so funny!

  • Well if you're talking about how she turns around because he says something, I'm pretty sure she turns out because she just got her ass pinched.

But "It's a good year" sounds about closest to actual words. Otherwise it's just flirty talk.

  • If you dont try how you gonna find out ?

  • he said, it's a good year.

  • He's obviously saying "Itchie Cute Year" Am I the only one on the planet with ears?!? He's refering to how her ass is both itchy and cute this year.

  • "ITSAGOOGGEEURL"

    Translation = "That's A Good Girl."

  • I saw it on the captions it says "ain't she cute"

  • the only odd couple movie clip with lemmon and matthau? common folks...

  • hes cutely and flirtatiously saying thats a good girl, like in a woochie wochie woo way

  • Baby talk for "that's a good girl"

  • Looking at the subtitles on the dvd it says "Ain't she cute" he's saying "Ain't she cu-cute" as others have already pointed out.

  • for god sake,he says its a good year

  • "It's a good yearrrrr...." :)

  • I couldn't agree more with bapyou...

  • I believe he says "ain't it cutie" talking about the wairess's behind... These two men are pure genius!

  • Who the hell posted this? Someone from Latvia? HE ISN'T SAYING ANYTHING FOR CHRIST'S SAKE! It's just gibberish he's saying...gibberish. IT'S JUST A NOISE TO GO ALONG WITH HIS FEELING FOR THE WAITRESS. JESUS! ARE YOU ALL INSANE?

  • I couldn't agree more...

  • he goes : "it´s a good year" because he seems to like the waitress. rest in peace, walter! you been great !

  • He's saying "It's a good year" in reference to the waitress' behind, which he has just slapped off camera. Notice her facial expression.

  • He's actually saying "Isn't she cuu-cute?".

  • He's saying; "It's a good year"...

  • Hey everyone :), I know this one as I have watched and cried in laughter at this movie a few times now, especially the next 2 minutes after the end of this clip :) LMAO

Anyways, if you listen carefuly, Walter is actuually saying "Itchie-goo-goo", the way he says it is pretty funny though :)

I hope this solves the mystery and thanks for the upload, top rating :)

  • I think its just baby talk as grabs her ass

  • he says, "ichaguguer!"

  • sounds to me like "thats a good girl", but who knows?? I'll have to read neil simons play and see!

  • This scene isn't in the play. They never leave the apartment in the script of the stage play.

  • It's still funny. <read the play too>

  • he says "eechaguguu"

  • That's what I thought he said.

  • lol, actually I was talking about the line before that one...

  • He says, "If you don't try it, how ya gonna find out?"

  • its a good year.

  • "It's a good year" is correct. Love this film.

  • I always hought it was "Isn't she cuuute" too :-)

  • Walter is funny as hell.

  • brilliant films. 1 better than 2, but that was ok. like waynes world

  • I have always thought he says, "She's a cute girl!"

An absolute classic of a film.

  • It's a good year. Thats what he said.

  • This is a great movie!

When my daughter bought me a DVD for Mother's Day 2005, this was one of the first movies I bought on DVD.

  • I want to see this film!

  • Isn't she cu-cute!! hope this helps!! (seen it over 200 times)
