396 CID Stock engine in 69. BAD ASS car. Chevelle SS. 1/4 MILE. Not always on a track. In 69 they would throw you in jail. You can outrun the cops but you can't outrun the radio.
probably my favourite Bruce song, it was a great track when I first heard it as a teenager when it first came out in the late 70's, but since then has become even more potent as the years have rolled by, finally getting to know what the song is all about, that sense of loss and longing that kicks in with certain apsects of adulthood
I am a big Bruce fan, and I can't stand it when people tell me that he "has such a raspy voice." They don't even know what they're missing! His music transcends the generations.
I listen to this and wonder if its the most wonderful 'rock ballad' (sorry that's horrid) ever. Then I think about the rest of this great album, and all of his back catalogue. And that alone makes me less sure.
@kossofyou I understand your dilemma! There is no way to pick a favourite song from Bruce's catalogue. For almost 40 years, I have tried. Songs appeal to one's mood and he has a song to fit every one we could ever have! In my humble opinion, there is no better artist. Bruce is the full package.
I remember listening to this on the Box album growing up and thinking, this man and his music will be with me and affect me all my days. Thanks Bruce for being a huge musical influence on my life.
I used to listen to this album over and over. A few of the songs had this kind of feeling about them. "Candy's Room," "Streets of Fire," "Something in the Night" and "Factory." A yearning for something....
We all love Bruce. We thank God in our darkest moments that he will echo the needs of our Hearts in music. And yet, there are always the E-Streeters in the Shadows. Was there ever a more talented, passionate piano player than Roy Bittan? We didn't miss you Roy. We never did. We never have. May your fingers keep dancin' for the rest of this Life, and beyond. -M.
Would just like to echo other positive sentiments here. We have been a troubled Generation. Embracing both the Freedom and the Terrorism that Change in our World has brought. Certainly we faced changes that were beyond us. And still there was a Friend named Bruce to comfort us. I may not be able to thank him in this Life. But I surely will in the next one. That's going to be some ride in that top-down '69 Chevy. An open road and the radio turned up... Thanks for uploading. -M.
This was the first Bruce song I remember way back when. My friends and I worked on hot rods and raced in the streets...the Branford on-ramp to thr 5 FWY. Those were great days.
@OzTwanger That's my point, it is simple but incredibly powerful. The body of this mans work, and what E Street has done with him, can make a lesser known song just absolutely incredible. Pure musical genius can make simple songs like this amazing. And that is what it is. Cheers, man.
@drowning4sid I am not sure it is that simple. Musically there is not a great deal to this song. The Boss undoubtedly a great song writer and performer though
amazing, quite possibly one of the most moving songs for the everyman....go home from work and wash up and go racing in the streets.....gonna ride to the sea and wash these sins off our hands.....no one writes lyrics like this anymore.....awesome
Possibly my favorite from "Darkness." I just wonder how many times Bruce has been reminded that you can't put "Fuelie" heads on a big block 396 over the years???
You know whats really unbelievable about these Paramount Theatre 2009 performances...there is no audience, they are playing to an empty theatre. And yet the passion and performance is still top notch. Count myself lucky to have been born in the era of Bruce and the band...and looking forward to 2012 tour, though Mr. C's plcae can never be taken.
I gotta '68 396 chevy in the shed that I haven't driven for 12 months. Time to do some livin'. She's getting dusted off sat morning to wake the neighbours....
this is the reason why this man truly is ! THE BOSS ! SEEN HIM ALL OVER THE WORLD FROM THE EARLY DAYS TO GLASTONBURY !! HE ALWAYS ROCKED THE PLACE OUT !! TRULY ONE OF THE ALL TIME GREATS !! RIP BIG MAN GONE BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN !! SHAME ON U 4 FOOLS THAT DISLIKE THIS !! WHATS YOUR IDEA OF MUSIC ? JUSTIN BIEBER EITHER THAT OR YOUR TOTALLY DEAF YOU FUCKING NOBODYS !!!
Saw Bruce 10 times in the last 20 years.Never got this song even 1 time.I prayed for it each show. Guess I have to watch these videos to hear my favorite Bruce song ever made
She just sits on the porch of her daddy's house and all her pretty dreams been torn and she stares off alone into the night with the eyes of one who hates for just being born. Thank you Bruce............
Every time I hear this song, I hope that they find redemption on the beach. And every time, I know that it's not very likely, that there's only emptiness and a kind of desperate defiance in that prolonged outro. And every time, I find another layer in this song, quite simply one of the greatest songs ever written.
Bruce, You habe been my companion all through the years...
First I`ve seen you in Hamburg/Germany in 1979, from this time I was infected, I learned playing guitar, I sing Your heart-warming songs, Your lyrics and Your music move me to tears. You will be my hero forever !!!!
@MrTimexspeed This is interesting. Where did you see Bruce in 1979? Because he only performed in a couple of places in Europe in 1975, and then was not back again till The River tour in 1981.
i can't even drive a stick shift or change my own oil. i'm not gay so i don't go for the sex-appeal stuff. but i was born in new jersey; and damn do i love this song! songs are about emotion/expression and this is one of the best ever!
when i drive down the garden st. parkway and the kids on motorcycles pass in betwen the lanes at 150, all i can do is give them the thumbs up and wish i had the balls that they have. bruce is a poet, and sums up freakish new jersey like shakespear in his way!
@Nicl3706 sono di Avellino si trova a 30 km da Napoli...questo concerto del boss non lo conoscevo è stupendo! non riesco a scaricarlo da nessuna parte... hai genitori italiani? ciao
Can pretty much sum up Springsteen's like this...Broken promises, torn apart friendships, people losing their jobs, people in street fights, songs about hope and shattered dreams, teenage hopeless romantics, hookers, bad relationships with their fathers and of course car racing :P Songs are very honest and paints a very dark picture of America and how us in America are struggling to get through life. People "that don't get it" are the ones chanting Born In The USA on Independence Day.
My older brother Terry and I used to race his red 72' notch back Vegas modified with a 300 aluminum block V-8 back in 79'. He introduced me to Bruce. This cassette tape used to play all night in the old pioneer. He died in 2001. He was 39 and still racing. I miss you Terry. Thank you for showing me the world and great music.
Hello, BOSS fans.I’m Japanese Boss fan and Roy Bittan fan. This song and Bittan's play makes me wanna cry............Wonderful song !!!Beautiful play!!!
I grew up with Bruce in my house everyday.....this performance is stunning...his band is his family...that is NOT something you see often......watch these guys play...they do it to make him be the BOSS...that is a love from friends you DO NOT find in this world these days...I am speechless watching them play this....and I'm a professional musician......unbelievable....!!!
I miss my 65 Formula S Cuda with my Hurst shifter, leaf springs, H's on back and G's in front, double overhead cam, factory tac, chrome air cleaner, All High Performance little muscle car. Nostalgia. It was a nice car until a priest hit me.
@CaliforniaStratCat Very, very true. You can take The Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones, U2, Dylan and anyone else you want but Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band are simply the greatest band of all time.
It does not get any better than that. Brilliant performance. I have been lucky enough to have seen him twice when he has been to Britain. Memories that will never die.
Bruce's music is magical...and no matter how hard you try to resist a song, it somehow manages to go straight to your heart and soul and pull out your emotions.
If you feel it in your soul, then that is what a passion for music is. I now appreciate this song more than ever because he sings from his own soul...
I think the 'twang' is just who he is now. As he's aged, the Boss has moved away from that full-throated, shooting for Roy Orbison sound. It's the voice of an optimist who's a little older, little wiser, and who had two or three dreams shorn off along the way. He's easily the artist of his generation who has aged the best, physically, musically, philosophically ...
