@cypresspeter2008 Turk was 59 inches Greek 64" I believe 64 kilo class = 141lbs do the math the Greek beat the Turk on height to weight ratio and came close to absolute win. Turk official winner Greek unofficial winner on more actual merit but figuring in height will probably never happen in lifting, only body weight. Cholakov was 6.5" taller than Reza, snatched only 12pounds less, taller man also weighed 17pounds less & had to pull weight over greater distance did not seem a limit lift.
That's quite a subjective declaration. If you wanna go based on Olympic medal count, Dimas wins (three golds, one bronze, although Kakhiashvilis and Mutlu are also three-time olympic gold medalists and Ronny Weller is also a four-time medalist). If you want to go based on world records, no one even comes close to Alekseyev (80 world records and also the first man to clean and jerk 500 pounds). I could go on, but case in point, your criteria for "the greatest, period" seems to be a bit arbitrary.
Naim won more world championships, 83,85,86,89,91,93-95. and could have won gold in 84 had there not been a boycott. Naim also set more world records than Dimas and won more world championship titles and has the all time greatest pound for pound lift in history. Those other lifters are great lifters, kakhi my personal favorite technician, but Naim won more titles and set more records than him or Dimas or Weller.
@ChildsPlay2008 Have you heard of something called Sinlair points? The Sinclair Coefficients are a means to compare different weight classes in olympic weightlifting. Naim Suleymanoglu lifted 152.5kg in snatch, 190kg in jerk and 342.5kg in total for the class of 60kg. This amounts to 505 Sinclair points, i.e., equivalent of lifting 505kg in total for the category of +105kg, which is the best ever performance in world history and will always be.
@caskurlu Re-read what I wrote and define "greatest". Is it the most weight lifted relative to BW? If so, Naim wins hands down. What about the most world championships? Most Olympic medals? Sets the most world records? Lifts the most weight? If any one of those is the answer, Naim is not the greatest. I'm not denigrating his lifting at all. He is without question ONE OF the greatest lifters of all time but he is NOT the most ACCOMPLISHED lifter of all time. "Greatness" has many definitions, sir.

lol. and the ignorant fool thinks he's using common logic by saying what is patently absurd. how is determining an athletes strength not a sport? and the saddest part is, we dont leave grafitti on your crappy music videos. youve definately got some issues.
@Realite58 Modern times does not cover times long past while there was no great science of lifting and training till modern days, we must assume there were some exceptional specimens. Like Thomas Topham, who might have been able to clean and jerk 4x bodyweight. It would have been before his knees were damaged by accident holding back a team of horses, not the pull, but the crash against other object. Undocumentable feats must be regarded as possibly fictitious but somethings are known of TT.
A generalization. Tom Topham was strongest man on percent in recorded history---an Englishman. Leonidas was BETTER lifter than his adversary. Why? Four and a half inches taller, same bodyweight. Less muscle per inch of height, more merit in his lifts. With that handicap of being more slender and having to move weight over longer distance, he still almost won. Whatever is true deserves to be said. I'm French, not Greek.
Obviously, you did not watch Naim at that time. He could have lifted more weight, and he did while he was training. He knew his opponent's limits and so he lifted the amount that would win him the gold medal. Please keep in mind that in weight lifting competitions, best wins all the time.
Turks are not comparing relative merits of competitors, they are engaging in aggressive nationalistic partisanship. This is like Protestants and Catholics in Northern Ireland. Not sportsmanship but hate, hate, hate.
I believe this was the 62kg weight class or something along those lines. Naim was roughly 120 lbs. to the best of my knowledge, and about 4'11". One of the strongest men ever.

I don't know his blood, if he thinks he is a Turk - OK. Only I said was, he became a big young athlete in the Bulgarian weightlifting school.
About the propaganda, maybe true, maybe not. "almost killed" - if communists want someone dead - he will be dead. Bulgarian government was ruled by USSR, everything was complicated, not only for the Turks in Bulgaria, but for the Bulgarians - too.
Turks in BG had some advantages - an example is education - no entrance examination for free university education. A decade later, the government decided to change the names of the Turks... and nothing good happened after that. Today they have an ethic party in the government, a TV programs in Turkish.
I am Bulgarian and I don't have problems with the people in Turkey and/or Greece. I visit this countries regularly.
Valerios moved the bar a shorter distance to catch, and got under it more quickly than Naim. Both phenoms, but I think Valerios was slightly the better artist.
Bulgarians say give us our Nain back, well here is what i have to say, if naim wouldn't have such a great lifter as he is now no bulgarians would say give us our Naim back so shut up
hehe yeah except for the greater part of history. Naim is shorter, so he has better leverage for the activity, and doesn't need to move the weight as far. the fact that he didn't completely wipe out "the Greek" means that he wasn't the better lifter
A great battle between two competitors. There was a good chance Valerios could have succeeded in the 419 Clean and Jerk. Unfortunately, it just didn't happen. Excellent performance by both of them. It's inspired me.
Pirros Dimas is regarded as the best weightlifter ever,in the world,as he holds the best record ever, with 3 gold olympic medals and one bronz. However,Chakiasvili is regarded by many wightlifting critics as the the best weightlifter by far,as he has done the best world records ever, with a huge variety of lifts.Souleimanoglou also hold an awesome record of 3 gold olympic medals, but he has been defeated more than once from Valerios Leonidis, the guy who is his opponent in this video.
sinclair doesn't account for height. if I lifted, I'd have a horrible sinclair, but not that horrible of technical form. at least... not in the jerk...
I wouldnt say shit on dimas, however his first gold with 370kg was a gift even lighter class lifters had lifted more including Oradurdiev who Alexeev wouldnt allow to lift
His name is Naim not Niam. Please change the title...

I don't know a lot about weightlifting, but Niam is just amazing!

Valerios moved the bar a shorter distance to catch, and got under it more quickly than Naim. Both phenoms, but I think Valerios was slightly the better artist.

Turks power is the best.

The Greek has a lot longer limbs than Suleymanoglu, makes the jerk definetly harder with longer arms.

in 96 valerios would be a champ but he met Naim and could not beat him ,after they met again and again
and valerios lost again and again

TURKS FUCK THE GREEKS AGAIN
ErmeniPKKSiken 4 years ago
hehe yeah except for the greater part of history. Naim is shorter, so he has better leverage for the activity, and doesn't need to move the weight as far. the fact that he didn't completely wipe out "the Greek" means that he wasn't the better lifter
andrewtheblacksheep 4 years ago
if pushed Naim would have lifted 190kg right there, and I don't think the greek would have done it.

If valerios had a problem with the height disadvantage, he could easily gain some weight and compete in heavier weight class. Dont be ignorant

Great battle

absolutely brilliant. valerios has nothing to be ashamed of.
wilwn 4 years ago

Naim Suleymanoglu also has the highest ever recorded sinclair, which was just over 500 points in the 1988 olympic games
Aaronian1 4 years ago 2
sinclair doesn't account for height. if I lifted, I'd have a horrible sinclair, but not that horrible of technical form. at least... not in the jerk...
andrewtheblacksheep 4 years ago
both were great

too much easy for suleymanoglu.
he really was ,is and will be the best lifter of the world.

WiseCoxis 4 years ago
I wouldnt say shit on dimas, however his first gold with 370kg was a gift even lighter class lifters had lifted more including Oradurdiev who Alexeev wouldnt allow to lift
