got her blasphemy album and really didn't like it. this is what i like about her, just the acoustic guitar and her voice. none of the drums, electric guitar, bass, all the junk that takes away from the tiny inflections in her voice that create real emotion.
@icantfindadangsn Maybe, its just that I play guitar, and for me an out of tune guitar is a thousand times worse than fingernails on a chalk board, but its really not that important for a live performance, and I don't think her guitar is out of tune in the other video from this performance so i wouldn't be surprised if she noticed it too and tuned it.
@onlyeyesabove I play guitar too. And saxophone, clarinet, bass, and I sing. I have played guitar for about 14 years and spent 8 of those in semi-professional and touring bands (now I'm just trying to sound pretentious myself. In my opinion, in certain contexts, being slightly out of tune adds character to a song.
Also, this isn't a live performance, per se. It's a live studio recording, or so it says in the title.
@icantfindadangsn well yea its just an opinion, and my opinion is, its hard to listen to a performance of any kind live or not when there is an out of tune instrument, its as bad as hitting a note out of key
and for the record, this IS a live performance, considering it was broadasted LIVE on the radio
@onlyeyesabove I'd disagree with you as well. Lots of musicians intentionally let their instruments get slightly out of tune, a slight bit of dissonance can create a sort of natural reverb it's really quite nice in certain contexts. And a live performance implies that their is one take but since this was in a studio I can almost be certain that this video is the product of a day or so of recording. They most likely did multiple takes until she nailed it, you can't do that on stage. Cheers.
@BlueAvenue22 what are you talking about? do you even play an instrument? dissonance and reverb are two completely different things, if they wanted reverb they woulda just put reverb on it. and this is the only song from te whole performance that her guitar was out of tune, she probably tuned it right after, its not that big of a deal i mean it was live, but dont try and say she put it out of tune on purpose because that is just stupid
@onlyeyesabove It's not 'just stupid' as I said many musicians do that. And yes I am a musician I've been active for the past seven years and have been trained formally. Ever so slight dissonance on chords can imitate the natural decay of tones in true reverberation, adding an airy and almost ethereal quality to your playing. Whether or not she did this on purpose is conjecture, but the result is a legitimate one whether intentional or not.
@BlueAvenue22 Actually, I go to this club in historic North Carolina to watch live performances, and a lot of the artists do in fact throw off the tune a little bit to give it a more raw and less refined sound. For the same reason, a lot of them switch to worn strings, as they say newer strings sound to clean. Anywho, love this song. If you want to see a great cover by two amateur artists, search for channel TheWeightOfLies. Those two have some great talent to share.
she is so very awesome. i love hearing her sing this song. it reminds me of an almost ex-boyfriend of mine :) i think i'll learn this song and sing it to him
She's amazing! She has soul and substance. I haven't felt this way about an artist in quite some time. Heard her on Father's Day on PHC while driving in the middle of nowhere Alaska. Thank you, Garrison K.!
She's so fucking brilliant! Every other song that she sings makes me cry, even bawl. I'm crying right now as I hear this. I saw her last night, it was mesmerizing!
@musicphan1 Thank God for A Prairie Home Companion and their doing their Father's Day show in OH. I have only now had the pleasure of hearing this angel...we are a lil off the main stream in KY. I am with you on the crying thing!! I was riding in the car with my parents while we listened to the show yesterday, and needless to say, its a little uncomfortable for a 39 year old man to explain why a song moves him to tears to his parents!!
@monizzle22 I heard her on Prairie Home Companion as well, and had to scribble down her name on a bit of paper while driving, so I could listen to more later. On the same bit of paper, I had written the name of a discount shoe store earlier. My girlfriend later found this scrap of paper in my jeans, demanding to know who this bitch was, and why I was meeting her at the shoe store.
Anyway, lovely voice on her, will be buying her music in album form, a rare thing for me.
Are you kidding? being a hipster is inescapable. The fact that she has a shaved head only adds to the irony of a folk singer with a septum ring. My theory... everyone is a hipster.
@Medium0Rare being a "hipster" or not is a label people put on others because they care what people think of them. the only thing that matters is if you like the song(or the band, movie, show ect). the real world has fewer and fewer labels thees days except the ones we create to make ourselves feel superior to others. grow up and see all the shads of gray.
@Gorlon1111 What's a hipster? Is that some sort of stereotype? Perhaps, when it all folds down we'll realize that stereotypes are simply silly. We're just people. And that thing in her nose is simply a piercing, a personal choice, it doesn't have anything to do with her character or her musical ability.
Her and her band are too good. Her brother David plays base and sings with her. The guitar player is unreal, he also goes be "ghost finger". The drummer is awesome. You got to see them live, ya won't hate it.
I love this song! It's about a guy in a relationship with a girl he cares nothing about, but she loves him. And the guy wants to get out of the relationship b/c it is holding him back. But he will let the girl "hold" him for another day because he just wants some. I totally get this song, it describes most of my relationships.
* Song could also be about a girl, I just relate to it as a guy
I saw her play a really rough version of this in a coffee shop when she was 16 and I was 11. I talked to her after the set. A wonderfully sweet person. I was pleased to know she loved the Allman Brothers lol. Amazing talent.
