I guess you just have to learn to be cynical of politicians and not be fooled by anything they try to deceive you with. At least in America. Voting democrats or Republicans is not going to get you anywhere, you just vote for the lesser or greater of 2 evils. As for alternatives? I don’t know, I don’t live in the states anyways but I’m close to it.

Ah ok thanks. Unfortunately I think then that Saramago also fell for the personality and marketing that's used for presidents in the US. Interesting what Chomsky is saying, and I think it's true, that the rhetoric and personality are used to hide what policies the pres. might have. What's also been said is that the two parties are two factions of one party, which is the business, and there never was a left position, it's only centrist and right. Poor analysis on Saramago's part :(.
"S's" comments are from the presidential campaign, I reckon! Still, he's a great writing artist! His first wife, Isabel da Nóbrega,"discovered" him while he was one of many no name journalists & right she was! But his political & filosofical public statements were always quite starry-eyed, embarrassingly unsophisticated, frumpishly apodictic & annoyingly simplistic! Always found him a populist, certainly NOT an intelectual sui generis, let alone a great thinker! His literature, however, is fab!
Well the only logical truth can be is that he is a great thinker and a great philosopher, because he is when you read his books, at least what I think. He is my favorite along with Chomsky, and I can't stand reading much anything else. His reflections are so numerous that I can't imagine anyone else writing so many. It just so happens, like you say, that his public statements are poor. It's true he didn't go to university, but I hate university people the most, they are stupid.
Regrettably, youtube replies are to be short! It favours false dichotomies, i.e.black-and-white thinking! I'll try: I'm absolutely sure, artists find "other" accesses to reality! German philosopher, writer & mining engineer Novalis ( 1772-1801), even wrote: "a poet (i.e.artist) is more knowing than a scholar", referring to intuition! S's words&writings, however, were very disparate! So, you loathe "univ. people"?Well, thinkers&philosophers are university people & Chomsky is a univ. professor;-)
Yeah I know, I had the same feeling too when Obama started his campaign, but back then I didn't know about certain things. I also too felt that he gave off a certain atmosphere, he has an electric positive personality, and uses nice rhetoric. It's quite striking what I think of him now. And Chomsky has said that not much policy changed, he is mostly carrying out Bush. Though I still love Saramago so it's no hard feelings.

Não estou a gozar: como vivo cá há centenas d'anos, não estou a par das novas etimologias do português vivido! O mesmo passa-se com a "nova" reforma ortográfica, que ainda me escapa completamente:
agora escreve-se "híbrido" sem "h", é? Em vez disso escreve-se "íbrido" como se lê mais abaixo no comentário do Kakusesha? Aguardarei resposta...

anhar, é utilizado em calão cá em Portugal, e neste caso significa, falar sem noção ou com falta de conhecimento, aplica-se quando alguém não sabe bem o que está a fazer ou a falar.
r.i.p. são as iniciais da expressão inglesa "rest in peace" que traduzido para português literalmente, descansa em paz.
Quanto ao novo acordo ortográfico, há muita gente a usar, mas português que é português escreve em português e não, segundo acordos que depreciam a nossa língua.
