The shit that this man was writing especially between 1971-1977 SHOCKED ME!!!!!! I just could not comprehend that could me done. Then I saw him at the Bottom LIne club in NYC, I was and am a fan for life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great upload. I think that in years to come the Captain will be recognized more and more as a major artist, both in painting and certainly as far as Rock'n'Roll is concerned. He was also very funny, I love listening to Safe As Milk, Clear Spot, The Spotlight Kid, Trout Mask Replica, Lick My Decals Off Baby, etc.. endless hours of enjoyment, but I think it might be too much for most people, who just don't get it. Anyway, you've done a great job, thanks for posting this
although i don't like autobiographic movies, but if some motherfucker tries to do it, i beg you give benicio del toro the lead part.... They are the same..
i went to music school in london and this documentary came on bbc II around 9pm on a sunday... i wish america would show respect like that to their own geniuses... even though he'd been out of the public eye for so long, it's still a rough loss... trout mask replica changed my life... much love and many blessings to the captain
Great docu! So great to hear Cooder, Drumbo, Zappa, Fowler, Feldman, JC Black talking about CB. I wish they could have gotten some other members of the Magic Band that played on Trout Mask like the 2 guitarists.
I'm so glad I saw CB at the Public Theater in NYC in 1980 w/ Blood Ulmer, who's also gone. What an unforgettable show.
There will never be another like him. Makes me so so sad. But we do have the music.
i first saw don in concert almost 40yrs. ago. he played a small club off lincoln center. cooder opened but i was scarcely prepared for what i saw next and i've seen a lot since but nothing musically as extraordinary as that night. it will always remain one of my fondest memories. thanx don, RIP.
It's funny I was into Frank Zappa and liked We are only in it for the Money album when I was about 14. I did not know anyone that was into Captain Beefheart... in fact when I was standing in J. C. Penneys debating on buying the two album Trout Mask Recplica produced by Frank Zappa I thought... the only person I know that is into Captain Beefheart was the guy on the album cover. I bought Led Zepplin 2 instead.
I came right to YouTube when I knew Beefheart made his transition...Excellent Documentary, Thank You... Focused... Aimed to get us out of the Catatonic State...unfortunately with MS he ended up in the most aware catatonic state...the split, the tension of the artist.
Just finished the documentary. Fantastic stuff. Many thanks to smash9grab. Having first heard the Captain when Clear Spot came out, and loving everything else he did from Safe As Milk to Ice Cream for Crow, I'm embarrassed to admit I didn't know this documentary existed. I don't recall any mention of Clear Spot, did I miss something?
Thanks for posting these videos. I always assumed he was the Captain from Captain & Tennile. That dude always wore a captain's hat. What was that all about, huh? I mean come on. But Love Will Keep Us Together is a classic song (and it's great for dancing).
@adderas I saw #3 on here... there's a full track on it that the record company has recorded a robotic voice over 'audio removed by...' or something. that must've been the problem, the record company wasn't getting their royalties when it was on youtube.
I watched this complete documentary without getting up. I understand Captain Beefheart better now. I think he is amazing. His songs attract me, and at the same time, push me away. I think that is his essence.
I'm sure he took it hard when Frank Died. In Frank's book, he said Beefheart would open the back of his Dad's Helms Bakery Truck, pull out some trays, and have his sister climb in to steal change from his Dad's belt changer. To buy smokes. I laughed, I used to buy donuts from the Helms man
Thank you, Beefheart, BBC, Mr. smash9grab. The BBC people did us (OK, me) a great service by making this footage, and you by posting it. Good to hear these grounded words from Beefheart and people who know him in the living sound and paint and in the flesh. CBH has found a way to keep it together even making art way out there on the edge. Thanks!
The rehearsal at 2:56 - 3:22 - playing the Smithsonian Institute Blues - anybody know where I can get exactly that version of the song but uninterrupted? Great version with lots of energy. Hope the original footage is available somewhere.

Get your tickets NOW folks. The Captain and the Magic Band are hitting the road for a tour after the new album is released on 7/6/2010. The tour begins in Vancouver, BC, slides down the west coast, and then zig zags the rest of the country. YES!
i remember don from over thirty years ago. i got to know him over a period of several months....he used to show up at the sand sailor to listen to the bands...a period of time in which he was almost destitute but well liked.....the thing i remember most was that he once poked a hole in his nose with a pencil to see if could whistle through it...here's to you don...peace be with you
Saw Don/Frank in Phx during the Bong Fury Tour(?) at the Celebrity Theater(stage spins 360). Sang Willie the Pimp and then promptly sat down with his bottle of whiskey. Saw him in Portland(OR) in 80-81 with his band and was fantastic. He's happier with his painting now. Very ill though. :(:(:(
Ultimate test of people if they know their music. Only one friend will let me play the Captain. On a limited bases. Wish Don and the Magic Band got the lifestyle, money and respect they deserved. Tortured Artist Effect I guess.
saw them do tmr at knebworth (uk) early 80's late 70's and the electric razor blade sound is still ringing in my head..... wonder how many people he showed the other side to.... shamanic .... i love you man... xxxxxx
When I meet someone who really seems to know their music I play them Trout Mask Replica. The range of reactions is brilliant. Some people can't handle it at all and just can't listen to it.
I have to admit that I never really heard of Captain Beefheart before this. I got here after some Zappa records.
After watching this I have to say I'm kinda scared of his way of living... Don't get me wrong, I do respect him, but there is something scary about it... "Onheilspellend" in Dutch, don't know the English word.
This man doesn't just create art, he IS art. Every move he makes or breath he takes is an inspiration to others.
Truly wonderful stuff. Thanks a lot for posting it. Nice to hear Peely again too. He was the first to play Beefheart in the UK back in the 60s.... on pirate radio, then on the BBC.
I was lucky enough to see Beefheart live in 1980. Wish I'd seen him in 74 at the Brighton Dome like a lot of my mates but I didn't go... i was a bit young.
If youlike Beefheart then check out Drumbo's book - Through the Eyes of Magic'. 900+ pages... an incredible story.
The thing that Matt Groening said about Trout Mask Replica growing on you... that's my experience too. It sounds like a bunch of noise at first... but you know, there are a lot of parallel rythms, sounds, harmonies.. after about 10 or 20 times listening to it.. it becomes a lot more obvious
Love the anecdote about John Peel driving the Captain to a gig at The Frank Freeman School of Dancing in Kidderminster. He thought it was a really groovy name until John informed him that it actually was a dancing school owned by a guy called Frank Freeman. I live near Kidder and can assure y'all that it is the least psychedelic place on earth.
the closing track is 'glider' from 'spotlight kid'. what a great documentary. i only saw him once in 1980 at the beacon theater in nyc with james blood ulmer opening. they were both fantastic! i love the last 3 albums as much as trout.
everybody here is all right I see? listening to beefheart almost twenty years ago had profound consequences. It is good to be back, I understand my life a bit more
guys who's sole motivation in life goes beyond being "knee deep in pussy". guys who have evolved from apes, unlike those who's sole desire is to be "knee deep in pussy".
essentially, guys who walk upright and who's knuckles arent dragging along the ground behind them.
unlike those who desire to be "knee deep in pussy".
ahem.
let me direct you back to the limp bizkit videos where you belong.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
LOL.
limp bizkit. A death worse than fate. Part of evolutionary success, one of the biggest parts, is attracting a mate and breeding. If you'd like to amuse yourself with these abstract noodlings, that's fine, but even 'evolved' women won't swoon o're this stuff. Knee deep? Not needed.
But one would be nice, and she won't want to do the courting dance with you if This is on your stereo I'll wager. Sorry boys.
well, seeing as i'm married with 2 children i think i might have completed my evoloutionary perogatives already, and i can assure you that primitive catatonic music was not required in the process.
the fact that you see this as "abstract noodling" when a good deal of it is highly structured suggests that this may be lost on you. fair enough.
you stick to what you know, i'll stick to what i know. and hopefully never the twain shall meet.
Congrats, you've just insulted every great man in history, who put the pursuit of their interests and passions ahead of being "knee deep in pussy". Einstein, Caesar, Confucius, Picasso, Hendrix, Hawking, Gates, etc. Now kindly go find yourself a drunk club chick for a night of meaningless sex.
MY GOD if you live in a house for 8 months and then..... Trout Mask Replica is sitting on my shelf and I thank you all for it: CBH, Zoot, etc. The Man With the Woman Head - Never go back to the desert.
Thank you for posting this, I was in a deep hole when this was a BBC broadcast and missed it. Shame about 3/6, but there you go with the corporate head up its arse thing. I'm the same age as the Captain and still think his music has the 'wow' factor and pleased he is there.
I remember in the early 70s, his music scared me.

Strange, disjointed beats. Unsentimental, illogical, unromantic lyrics. Wierdness for wierdness sake.
Interesting.
But it is no mystery why only guys like this music, and weird guys at that. Guys who aren't exactly knee deep in pussy.
ironbuttermilk 2 years ago
guys who's sole motivation in life goes beyond being "knee deep in pussy". guys who have evolved from apes, unlike those who's sole desire is to be "knee deep in pussy".
essentially, guys who walk upright and who's knuckles arent dragging along the ground behind them.
unlike those who desire to be "knee deep in pussy".
ahem.
let me direct you back to the limp bizkit videos where you belong.

LOL.
limp bizkit.
Sorry boys.

As an evolved woman, I am over the moon. Life on the edge is the only place to be. Granted, not many women are comfortable there.

well, seeing as i'm married with 2 children i think i might have completed my evoloutionary perogatives already, and i can assure you that primitive catatonic music was not required in the process.
the fact that you see this as "abstract noodling" when a good deal of it is highly structured suggests that this may be lost on you. fair enough.
you stick to what you know, i'll stick to what i know. and hopefully never the twain shall meet.

You're a tool with no clue. Anyhow, you never jammed with Ry Cooder, but I have several times. David Lindley too. Even Brownie McGee.
Sex is always 'meaningful' to me.
You boys crack me up.

dood, if i wanted to get "knee deep in pussy" i wouldnt be jamming with ry cooder!

Love the line up on Ice Cream For Crow, especially Cliff Martinez, a punk drummer who later drummed for The Dickies.

Thank you for posting this, I was in a deep hole when this was a BBC broadcast and missed it. Shame about 3/6, but there you go with the corporate head up its arse thing. I'm the same age as the Captain and still think his music has the 'wow' factor and pleased he is there.
