My doe just had her baby (only one) and ate it within the same day. Stress causes mothers to eat their babies, so that in the wild, the next litter would have a better chance of survival. You standing there talking really loudly probably did not help her stay calm.
@FeralWolfSoul my female mice ate all her babies too. but the male mice didnt eat a single one. and she also only gave birth to one baby , around 2-3cm excluding the tail.
Those mice had to be very stressed I actually breed mice and the father will actually help in the raising yes he will mate with her right after birth BUT mice generally will not eat their young like hamsters will only time they will is when they are stressed and and bothered
I don't know if you ended up with no babies in the end, but if you did it's because the male ate them! Immediately after the mom gives birth, she goes into heat, and this will make the male go to no ends to mate with her. She will refuse him, because she has babies to care for now, but the male WILL eat them all just to mate with her, so if you plan on breeding in the figure, take the male out as soon as you realize shes pregnant.
She, the male and the other pregnant female ate them all. Now I know to eliminate the male as soon as the females show signs of pregnancy.... I am going to get a bigger aquarium for them once the females get pregnant again. That's the only way I know to keep the females from eating their comrade's babies.
Yes, it is a sad thing, but at least you know now. ^_^ Mice, however, can recognize genetic abnormalities in babies immediately after birth, and if any are recognized, the mother or helper female will eat them. Aside from disease, and no male present, the mice should deliver all babies fine. Make sure you have much fresh food and water, though, if there isn't than the mother will think that there aren't the proper resources available for taking care of her children, so she will eat them.
@leviclancy Actually male mice are AMAZING fathers and very rarely eat the babies. If they ate the babies there could have been a number of reasons for it. Was it the first litter? New moms sometimes eat the babies because they don't know what to do. Were they sick? Was there enough food or water? It could have been a space issue as well. Removing the male before birth is still a good idea because mice moms that aren't given a break between litters will also eat the babies just for a break.
@Meatbagz: This is not always the case, my mouse had babies, and I kept the male in there the entire time... a month later, she had another litter, and then i seperated males from females, I had 22 mice. This is just stario typical. Not all males eat the babies. The dad who was the dad of both liters, would lay in the little house with the babies while the mom was gone.

@Meatbagz I had 3 mice 2 boys and a girl and they were all meant to be boys but anyway Georgina (the girl) gave birth to some babies and Ben (the father) didn't eat any of them because George (the other male) died two day before Georgina gave birth and they were fine but eventually we had to drown all 3 or 4 cages because my brother got some too and it was endless breeding and I didn't have enough money to buy more cages for them but anyway we had to drown them because they got sick :(
@Thecolete Couldn't mum drowned them all and I never got to choose the ones I could of kept I hated her for days after it happened but I have a new baby and he is very healthy and I am sticking to one mouse hahahha
@Thecolete haha shh and yeah Stripe is a little terror i had a bag next to his cage and I went in this morning and there was ripped bag every where I am just hoping he hasn't swallowed any :O
@Meatbagz well not always, i had a mouse have 16 babies and the male took care of them when the female was taking a break.... and then even after a month he still didnt mate with her bacause she still had babies.

if u knew she was eating them why didnt u stop her?!
haileyboper 2 years ago
maybe its cause the baby was probably sick or was diseased so she was just protecting the other ones, i dunno

What do you suggest they do? Pry a pregnant animal away from an already dead or dying baby, risking killing the unborn babies?
ride4lifekels 2 years ago
stop a mouse giving birth? What with a plug? If you interfere with a mouse giving birth she will eat ALL her babies.
