  • Nixon did go to Independence, MO the day before the funeral and paid his respects at the bier. LBJ's funeral was at National City Cathedral in DC, and Nixon attended that (but did not speak).

  • This is not RFK's funeral. Nixon is shown in the video, and he was not President in 1968 when RFK's funeral was held. Also, RFK's funeral was held at night, because the train was late arriving in Washington from New York.

  • the man that lied killed for power

  • Is this the only vidoe of Lyndon's funeral? My uncle was the agent assigned to stay w/ him from the time they left the Ranch until his interment. If anyone knows of more on the funeral would you please let me know?

  • "After tomorrow those goddamn Kennedys will never embarrass me again—that's no threat—that's a promise."

That's what Johnson said one day before JFK was slaughtered.

Johnson should have been dragged naked up those steps.

Then hung from the building and have people whip his dead body.

  • RIP, Mr. President...Johnson was a president for the people, we have not seem a man such as him since.....the rest that followed, lip-service...

  • its ironic three presidents died during nixons turn yet the next president to die was nixon himself

  • It's definitely LBJ's. I remember it well. Truman's, I believe, took place in Independence, Mo., as mentioned here. President Nixon attended both funerals. Another president, Eisenhower, died while he was president, in 1969. Ike meant a lot to Nixon, of course. He lied in state at the Rotunda before being taken home by train.

  • IIRC, weren't there VTRs (Video Tape Recorders) during that time period?

  • It's LBJ's... The casket went up the Senate side steps. Only LBJ's funeral had that feature.

  • They made us watch both LBJ and Truman's funerals when I was in second grade, I remember them very well, or at least that two presidents died like a month apart.

  • LBJ did not die in '72. It either '73 or '74. Hoover died in '72.

  • He died January 22,1973

  • LBJ died on 1/22/1973. Hoover died on 10/20/1964.

  • This was a very good idea by your parents - a little ahead of their time. The pictures actually came out better than one would think. I think this is LBJ's funeral (Nixon attended both Truman's and LBJ's funerals) but the Christmas card in the background may indicate this was Truman's funeral after all. Truman's funeral was just before New Year's Eve and LBJ's was the last week of Janaury. Thanks for posting this, very interesting.

  • Actually this is Harry Truman's funeral. President Truman died on December 26th, 1972.Johnson passed about one month later.

  • I'm pretty sure it's not President Truman. While he did have a state funeral, it wasn't in Washington and I don't believe he lay in state in the rotunda. I believe all his services took place in MO.

  • Truman's body never went to Washington, because of the circumstances that made him Vice President and President. The entire funeral observances took place in Independence per his wishes, I saw it and it was boring, no eulogies, Dean Acheson would have probably given one but he died the year before.

  • Actually, Truman orginally planned a state funeral with all the pageantry in Washington. He even bragged that it was going to be a "damn fine show". But as the years went on, it was obvious that Bess was in frail health and would not be able to travel. So they changed the plans not too many years before Truman died to have the entire service and burial at the Truman Library, to spare Bess from either trying to make it to DC or missing a signifcant part of her husband's funeral.

  • @vitoduval What Circumstance which prevented him from having a state funeral? His orginal plan was to have a big state funeral, but Mrs. Truman was too old so the funeral plans were change to have it at the library.

  • @vitoduval No matter how you become President, you are still entitled to a state funeral. President Roosevalt actually picked Truman at the DNC in '44. Truman is the only President with a college degree.

  • @vitoduval I meant without a college degree...lol

  • @norr4636 You mean the LAST President without a college degree. Several 19th century Presidents never went to college (e.g. Lincoln, Andrew Johnson).

  • @Suprkit This is Johnson funeral...Truman didn't come back to D.C. in order to save Mrs. Truman a long trip back and forth....So his state funeral was at his library

  • @Suprkit It is not President Truman. Harry died the day after Christmas here in Independence and his body never left the city. He did not want a state funeral and his services were held at the Truman Library. President Nixon did not attend

  • As you stated in your response this is Lyndon Johnson's funeral I think also. This is a fascinating video. There is a photo of a 61 Lincoln which is in a still photo you have in 1973. That was the actual limousine which President Kennedy was shot in 1963. They had it rebuilt and that is exactly how it looks now in Dearborne Michigan. It was used until 1977. Did you see the still? I didn't know they used it in such high profile events then, but apparently they did.

  • I think this is the funeral of Lyndon Johnson not Bobby Kennedy. Bobby Kennedy was buried in Arlington at night time since the train got in late. His body was not at the rotunda, and this shows Richard Nixon as President, and he was not President when Robert Kennedy was killed.
