  • SPIN TO WIN

  • I know absolutely nothing about this method or its tradition, but I see one way realization could be obtained... If one looks within for That which is not moving, but within which the movement is taking place... that is to what I am pointing. My guess would be that Rumi reached a point where he realized that he was not dancing at all, rather the Cosmos was dancing within his own awareness. Again, I know nothing, but if this is of assistance to anyone, I am glad.

  • morgana

  • So tell me, do THESE ppl bcome enlightened after they fall from their swirling? i doubt it. Rumi was only a poet...why copy wat he did and make it a ritual? REAL Sufism is not like this. Nor is Islam. And Sufism IS a sect of Islam the poster of this video doesnt have to say that. this swirling to music looks like plain bid3aa. dont get me wrong, im a Hanafi Muslim training to be an Imam in a couple years, i love Sufism. this....this is not Sufism

  • @MookieDaCookie You will not be able to produce a legitimate meditation technique that guarantees enlightenment after doing it. But if ONE person, Rumi in this case, attains enlightenment with a technique, then it is a door for others as well. Rumi was a poet, Kabir was a shoe maker, God can make his home in anyone, their profession does not matter.

  • I always pay attention to the mystics in every religion. They are the courageous explorers who get closest to the great mystery.

  • @createallow3126 Nicely put. Much respect.

  • beautiful, divine, humans have the ability to rise to divine evolution and also to become victim to bestiality and this beautiful meditation restores hope in mankind that through love, meditation and celebration, one can rise to the higher realms of divinity.

  • Can you pls tell what kind of meditation is this?

  • @aherrns The SEMA meditation lasts app. 45 minutes. Rumi, the man who discovered the efffects of whirling, did it for a long time. He simply started whirling, and whirled for 36 hours continuously, after which he fell down enlightened.

  • @4transform Thankyou for the enlightement. I appreciate you taking time to explain.

  • I have never seen this anywhere in my life. Where did this spinning thing come from in Islam? I dont think that Allah would like people spinning around to a rhythm to show the balance of the sun.

I dunno, maybe this is just a cultural-religion thing, rather then being just a religion thing.

Not here to argue, just here to learn and understand. :)

  • @rajonmd Allow me to explain. Sufism is an Islamic sect. The turn, whirl, or sema, is an form of meditation that ideally should lead to enlightenment. It is not to show the balance of the sun. This form of meditation was discovered by Rumi, a Sufi poet whose writings are largely read even in the western world. Tradition says that he heard the music of pipes out of nowhere and instinctively began to spin, and fell down thirty six hours later enlightened. Hope that clears things up a little. :]

  • how wonderfull to see the centre of thehuman spirit spin in harmoney within those that partake. are we not then dancers within the centre of our lives in the cosmos. thank you

  • mevlana is from afghanistan

  • what is the secret for them NOT falling down, after continous spinning ?

  • sufism is reality of İSLAM..all religions in same time..who said is not islam must read a little more!!!

  • @4transform IGNORE @Bilal011uz 5

  • crazy... sufism is not islam!!!

  • @Bilal011uz et al:

The poster of this video never said sufism is islam. I was thinking that a discussion of this nature would evolve for this video, and allowed it up till now. Following this set of comments about the prophet and what is and what is not islam, there will be no more comments allowed about the subject. That discussion has nothing to do with this video nor the reason it is posted here.

  • boring, spinning assholes

  • @BrendanIsCool chill douchebag

  • Name one sahaba or prophet who did something the sufis do today. did the prophet or any of his followers dance? NO. so you think your better than the prophet? good luck

  • @Quran871 Rumi's enlightenment (from whirling, the origin of this meditation) is neither better nor worse than the prophet's door to wisdom, or his sahabas. But it is different. Different does not mean better or worse, but many times we want to cast it that way.

  • @4transform yes but bringing it to a religion is very haram. like i watch tv and the prophet didnt have a tv but i dont associate the tv with religion. and yes music is haram in islam see the hadith on my channel in the music section. its were it says about me. you know it asks for name and music and all that go and see. im not sufi alhamdullillah. sunni

  • @Quran871 hi, I don't care at all for your deified men and your idolatry of beings your raising and imposing of spells from books above and upon others. Spiraling creates accelerated inward compression toward neutral center/god, Compression is the consciousness self referring. If you do not self refer you do not gain a soul, read as many words as you like believe in whatever names you like they won't save you from failing to develop your self, if you cannot create how can you recreate in death.

  • @Quran871 Name one of the sahabas or the prophet (peace be upon him) that used the internet like you are. 'NO. so you think your better than the prophet? good luck'

  • faszinierend ..unglaublich schön

  • that's beautiful

  • I tell ya! If they keep doing that they're gonna get Dizzy!!!

  • Seems bit tibetan things in it

  • this is not dervish dance or whatever you call it

it THE FIRST DANCE OF dari speaking people of afghanistan found and created by MAWLANA JALALLUDIN BALKHI

this is the first dance we had

i know the culture of balkh even reached even to turkey (where the persian empire ended) lol

    I KNOW I AM RIGHT

you dont need to discuss with me ok!

  • SALAAM

WAS THIS PRACTICED BY THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD(SAW) OR THE SAHABA (RAA)?

    JAZAKAL'ALLAH

  • the music was so relaxing. and the dancers seemed to be in a trance like state as they were spinning. very beautifully done, if i may say so

  • How fast are they spinning?!! Wow!

  • All my respects to your noble work. The dervish (to me) is indeed the most important thing of Islam. I am not muslim though.

  • The Dewishen dance is really only a form of meditation. With the thoughts, to turn around as the earth rotates. Since this "Dance" is so interesting for tourists, there are very many organizers such "look" organize dances, such as in this video. So don't be fooled, the person in this video are not real Derwish's. There are simple dancers to provide amusement for the tourists.

The real Derwish "Dance" will be carried out by the Islamic Sufi orders.

  • relaxing dance

  • I used to have this workout DVD.

  • are they even muslims

  • @famemonster1993 it's obvious that you didn't get the essence of it.

  • Don't they ever get dizzy?

  • @mynameisnterin No, they don't get dizzy at all; part of the training as a child is to use a stake in the ground as the physical focus, and to only look at one, single point for the mental focus. They don't look at anything but that one point as they're spinning, so they don't get dizzy. The spiritual focus is to remember and praise God as you're spinning. This was in a film I saw at high school.

  • It takes some real legwork and balance to keep going like that.

  • It really isn't difficult to do this, it takes practice, like riding a bike. I think we place limits on ourselves that are unnecessary. If you practice this, when you start, you will spin in one direction and start to feel dizzy. To fix this, you spin in the other direction. Do this until you can spin in one direction for longer and longer periods of time. There's beauty in this because it's so simple and anyone can do it, some of us did this as children, why should that change?

  • When could I go see this if I got to the Mevlevi Lodge? It's something they do very often in the year?

  • @hyst3ricglamour About twice a week.

  • @hyst3ricglamour

we are doing this seromoni each week on thursday nights..please view web page

    ww.emav.org

  • I'd like to ask a question if I may. I notice the array of colours in their clothing. Is there a purpose to those colours in any specifics?

    Thank you for the vid!

    E

  • @Existantia see the answer to @TheJimzhe842 . The symbolic meanings were all asigned to the ritual AFTER the event of Rumi's enlightenment. What happened to him was, he simply started whirling. For no reason at all, just because he felt to, and kept going for something like 36 hours, until there was no one left inside, only the whirling. It is something which happens in the inner world with whirling, there is no explanation for it.

  • @Existantia

those colours are a non sense.

they were white because it is a "shroud". before dancing they were a black cape which is the coffin. I filmed a documentary film on Dervishes 20 years ago in Konya and Istambul, I never saw such a non-sense!

  • For some reason I keep expecting them to use the moves of the Dervish from Guild Wars, but some of them are physically impossible.

  • I probably wouldn't be able to spin for five minutes, let alone an hour.

  • That is so hard to do. Those people are amazing. Very impressive.

  • I just keep waiting for something else to happen......they could at least jump or change formation.......I want that happiness but I don't have a big hat and hoop skirt. Or an Indian band......

  • Come, come again, whoever you are, come

Heathen, fire worshipper or idolatrous, come

Come even if you broke your penitence a hundred times

Ours is the portal of hope, come as you are

    MEVLANA

  • Beautyful!...

  • Undone such an PROPHET DANCE! Fitting DANCE! ENTITIES NOT MUSIC!

  • i get dizzy on my computer chair, how can they last?

  • What the hell is that.

  • @cintique123

    watch?v=UjSig4DxU_M&feature=related

thats what the 'hell' it is

  • Thanx for this video.Beautyful!

  • es lo mas mistico que he visto en mi vida :O

  • those guys are wearing skirts.......

  • @MrVitiello1 so what ? you idiot !

  • it seems it would make u dizzy untill u got used to it veryinteresting i love exploering other culters excuse my spellin

  • When Celaleddin met ''sems-i tebrizi'' it was the time he became Mevlana, Some belives şems-i tebrizi killed by fanatics... I like this part when Şems threw away Mevlana's books and said that forget them because real enlightenment in your soul..

i suggest you to read Mevlana's life and poems,It is Fantastic,

  • i like the music, there;s actually people within the autistic spectrum that do this to no music well the music we all hear,it's a wonderful, colourful video :)

  • ¡Eso es un serio nivel de meditación!

  • i'm surprised they didn't vomit.

must take a lot of practice and hard work.

  • whats the secret of doin that without gettin dizzy?

  • do not try this at home!!!its not as easy as you think!!!!

  • looks like their in a really hardcore trance. how do they do this?

  • Care to learn how to achieve real enlightenment?Want to really wake up from the lies?paranormal powers, psychic readings, it is all possible.THE-HIDDEN-SPIRITdotCOM it is time to wake up.

  • If spinning around in circles makes you happy and you feel it brings you closer to the divine, then I say: spin to your heart's content!

I know I like to spin around in my office chair, and i loved spinning around as a little girl (I still do it sometimes)

No matter what your religion or ethnicity, we are all far more similar than we are different. It would benefit humankind for us all to choose to see that instead of our differences.

  • why they do like that?

  • they r guna b sooo dizzy hahaha

  • hahaha

    what they are doing...

    it looks so silly.

  • @StylaHasani Yeah to Americans it does.

  • 10 people have never left the USA

  • Come, come, whoever you are.

Wanderer, worshipper, lover of leaving — it doesn't matter,

Ours is not a caravan of despair.

Come, even if you have broken your vow a hundred times,

    Come, come again, come.

  • How do they not get dizzy and fall over? Is it just from regular practice?

  • This is admittedly very pretty to look at. Tourists in polyester pantsuits just love this kind of stuff (!).

Now . . . if, on the other hand, you'd like something more authentic and sincere, search for this YouTube video instead:

The Naqshbandi Sufi Whirling Dervishes of Montreal

And observe especially the woman in white blouse in the rear . . .

  • @greenrate : it appears both groups are doing sincere work. Montreal is rocking, love to sit in on that meeting. BTW, there was no one wearing pantsuits made of polyester that I could see there in Istanbul. Most of those attending were Turkish people.

  • @greenrate I find it Dismaying & unbelievable that you dismiss the work of this group because of a couple of tourist in polyester pants! (whom I did not notice I might add till you pointed it out) This is a lovely video of dedicated Sufi's

  • @greenrate I didn't know Naqshbandi sufis did the whirling meditation I thought that it was mostly the Mevlevi order (forgive me if i just spelled that wrong). I was under the assumption that the Naqshbandi Sufi order used mostly sitting in quite inner silence meditation. Correct me if I'm wrong because I'm very interested in learning as much as I can. Thanks.

  • @greenrate Confusing. you denegrate this amazing world spiritual treasure

saying it is less 'sincere and authentic' than another; yet the Naqushs open say

they took their Sema performance from the Mevlevis even playing the Turkish

Mevlevi ayins as they perform. So why the judgment or comparison? not necessary.

    Go deeper ....it's all there.

  • @greenrate well... i saw both the vdos... and I liked this one much more than the other one you prescribed... this one is flawless... as if the dancers have got united with the universal rhythm... in the one you mentioned... the dancers were still forcing themselves in their moves... they were still TRYING! they would need time to get at this level of unification... try till then!

  • i love Annemarie Schimmel's Book about Jalaluddin Arrumi. I know alot sama from this book, and get how this culture enrich islam.

  • The one in the pure white and the one in red I find particularly hypnotic. Thank you for the vid!!

    : )

  • this is bidaa...dont put the name of islam on this action...and whats up with the instruments? come on...Dont differ from the sunnah and quran ....astaghfirullah...

  • See how one hand faces up towards heaven and the other faces down towards earth?

  • I'd vomit!

  • who would spin for 1 hour like that??????

  • @TheJimzhe842 see the comment below beginning:

"The SEMA meditation lasts app. 45 minutes. Rumi, the man who discovered the efffects of whirling," . . .

  • @TheJimzhe842 Any one who dont smoke pot

  • @TheJimzhe842 - I bet they is pretty dizzy by the end of it!

  • i wonder why they whirl,

    the music sounds so spiritual

  • @TheJimzhe842 They whirl to escape everyday consciousness and reach a spiritual dimension.

  • so strange its like they're in a trance almost meditating

  • @benhd1 that's exactly what they are doing: the continuous movement puts them in a trance-like state. It's a form of meditation with the aim of discarding the ego and reaching union with God. (The hat represents the ego's tomstone and the white skirt the shroud of the ego.)

  • Hu Dost

  • do not spin to the left with your head turned to the left right hand down and left hand up. by doing it the way they do it to the right you can find yourself in a high place feeling as if you are moving on auto pilot. you'll get new knowledge and ppl will think you're going thru a manic state of depression. one way to get back to the norm is to spend the opposite way but if you go that way for to long from my experience you can end up scared and confused and lost for months. mentally.

  • I don't know why but I'm completely drawn to this. It's so simple yet so elegent. It's so cool

  • why?

  • Wow very poised thats really amazing i tried it but i just stumbled around a lot amazing

  • makes me sleepy!!! zzzzzz

  • There is no Tasawuf without Sha'riah.

  • beautiful but strange

  • Beautiful....very beautiful.....what peace...thanks for the clip

  • Well, they look in peace until you saw their legs moving not to fall down. That's why they use women dresses? Not a lot of fags, of course. Yeah.

  • This is true mysticism. Truly sufism is very peaceful. Sufism is beautiful just as beautiful as mowlana rumis poems itself. I wish to one day travel to istanbul and learn more about sufism. It is truly peaceful to watch this

  • Fascinating! ... and beautiful.

  • The constant swirling is a symbol, symbolizes how man is slowly leaving behind all his material, superficial and emotional ties to this earth and is moving towards a spiritual state of mind. This goes with the old Sufi saying "I looked for God and found only myself, I looked at myself and found only God". The more they turn the closer they get to themselves and finally find God. This is more or less the symbol of the Dervish dance. I am free to open debate if you don't like this explanation.

  • i can do that whirley thing. it usually takes about 7 or 8 pints, then i get whirley as f*ck. otherwise i dont generally mind. i do like getting squiggley, whirley i'm not sure of, squiggley, then i'm all for it.

  • Brought tears to my eyes to see people so connected to the divine and am searching so that I can have just a small amount of the connection that they have with the divine, So beautiful! Thank you for sharing!

  • Too much consistancy. Could not keep my attention span on spinning.

  • saw this live in istanbul. such a tourist trap.. most excruciatingly painful/boring hour of my life.. can't believe we spent money to watch men in dresses twirl.

  • @NOrtiz2009 it is not your fault if God did not open your eyes..

  • saw this live in istanbul. what a tourist trap. most excruciatingly painful/boring hour of my life. my father fell asleep.

  • Asalam o Alikum to all my brothers if u want any topic or search regarding suffisum than most welcome and visit my web blog

    suffisum.tk

  • a refreshing vid to share

  • Wow, that looks like such fun...

    They would be so dizzy...

  • The whirling gets hypnotizing after a while.

  • beautiful, absolutely beautiful!

  • i'm sorry.. so sorry.. but a thought just crossed my mind as i saw the hands gesture.. one hand up and one down.. it sorts of resemble.. -sorry.. so sorry.. just a thought- it resembles the hands gesture of the baphomet.. so i was a bit creeped out.. oh please don't think i'm suggesting anything by this remark.. it's just a thought that crossed my mind.. didnt mean to offend anyone or start anything bad..

  • thank you for posting this beauty, I am really touch by it, so much peace on their faces, Gracias,

  • so gay

  • @glower125 . yup its happy

  • back in times, when alcohol was forbidden, muslims were whirling to get drunk. this is our cultural heritage..

    lol just kidding.

  • @norelojon

    it is not funny..

they are making it for their believes..not funny

  • It's fun when you spin round and round dizzy wizzy style and then when you are about to ralph, you drop down to the ground laying on your back.

The entire world feels like it's bobby around on the ocean.

  • Watching dervishes always makes me feel so at ease.

  • This guys are reaaaaaally amazing !!!

One hand to God, one to the Earth

  • I bet they are dizzy as crap

  • So boring...

  • one of the most beautiful things i have seen in my life. i hope to travel to turkey and witness this first hand.

  • Is there a particular reason why Dervishes always spin counter-clockwise?

  • @bishonenrancher -most dancers spin counter clockwise...skaters also. There is one ice skater who spins clock-wise, Johnny Weir. It really sets him apart. As someone who took ballet for many years, turns which start clock wise are few & far between (they can be, spatially, very disorienting)...

  • Thank you for this video...it made me cry, it gave me joy, it is so peaceful. The music was gorgeous, especially the second piece or movement..

  • I too did this as a child and still do to this day (I'm 25). I still climb trees too. I don't see why adults think they have to give up lifes simple pleasures. Now spin for a while, then when your not dizzy anymore, go climb a tree or 2. I dare you! :)

  • @Hobblefish I'm just the same. Trees are the best places for thinking :) I'm not so good with spinning though - makes me feel a bit queezy haha! (i'm a year younger than you)

  • i'd probably trip over my feet on the first spin! sooooo not cordinated:)) but turkey is awesome, love it there:)

  • I've done this since I was a child and still do! I am now 46 yrs old! I was born and live in america and never had any exposure to this or even knew other people did it besides me. I would do it in my room, in private with music and then later with headphones. When i was younger I could do it for 2-4 hrs at a time only taking a quick break to drink something or go pee...lol...now I will do it anywhere from 20 mins to 2 hrs depending on how long I am called to do it for...if that makes sense.

  • I'd have to meditate on not getting sick. I wonder how long one has train for this. It's very peaceful to watch. I guess once you get "in the zone" there's no discomfort at all.

  • When I saw how at peace and in the moment the were as they whirled it literally brought tears to my eyes to know someone could find such a level of happiness.

  • @Utubepirate that kind of happiness is available to most people, but interestingly, not many people want it.

  • @4transform "Real happiness is cheap enough, yet how dearly we pay for it's counterfeit" - Hosea Ballou

  • @4transform Well said.

  • @Utubepirate I have to agree with you. I have heard of Whirling Dervishes before and wanted to look at some videos. For some reason, I couldn't stop crying. I am glad to know I am not the only one. Such peace!

  • trance..... they can get in full contanct with the cosmos or the spiritual side of this earth

  • molto bello!

  • I used to do this as a child! Wish I could do it now/

  • @tobesograteful you can. What prevents you?

  • I heard Will Ferrel mention whirling dervishes in Kicking and Screaming. I youtubed it and was surprised to find out they actually exist

  • Was Rasulullah saw ever did this?

  • @rabiahaladawieyah no recoredd in any hadith or hestorical sources say the rasoolallah did this I'm a sunni not a sufi but i in enjoy the proformance

  • It certainly is a beautiful ritual

  • Mevlana?konya ..all I said ..if you're not writing good comment don't write anything.. wonderful dancing . for all things for God ..

  • My friend is a Sufi and a tattoo artist and she showed me her tattoo of a Whirling Dervish, so I had to look this up. It's beautiful!

  • beautiful and I am delighted to see some woman whirling with the men, i find that unexpected and surprising

  • @crystaldragonwoman I felt the same delight and surprise.

  • anybody knows the title of the music which starts at 1:50 ?? so sweet

  • @cosmauze Yes I agree with Cosmauze- I would love to know the name of the song or who plays/conducts it.

Beautiful video :] It really captures the essence of whirling with such simplicity.

  • Oh my God!!

  • 蘇菲轉轉舞, 比王力宏還會轉

  • I tried this after lunch and puked up after only 3 spins.

  • A bewitchingly beautiful work of videotography, thanks for posting.

  • One of the most beautiful spiritual things you'll ever witness. This takes years of training.

  • Your comment agrees exactly with the facts.

  • They probably remain disoriented for hours after this performance.

  • @drav1dan

not really, they leave the stage walking a pretty straight line, and it takes about 15 minutes to come back to "normal." They practice a lot tho.

  • @4transform I thought that it was a form of meditation for them rather than a performance.

  • @4transform

actually i've heard that you cannot practice this, some of world greatest dancers coudn't spin in one side for more than two-three minutes.

I've watched this in Istanbul, do you know where i can get this music? (i was idiot for not buying at Istanbul).

  • one hand up (taking from god), one hand down( giving to all people)... they r whirling n they head whirling, they just feeling god...

  • what happens when they start puking?

  • What's so special about this? I searched for "dervish" and all i get is men in dresses spinning around...

  • If you look closely at the video you'll see half of them are women. The word you have searched for "dervish" refers to one who practices this meditation, the SEMA meditation, which is whirling. What were you looking for instead?

  • I'm not sure, but this was quite surprising. Is the whirling a form of meditation?
