Hi Donald, thanks for the video and I enjoyed watching it. I never cooked okra before so I'm doing some research on it. Will try okra gumbo this weekend.
Great vid, am from the England & i have never tried Okra at all, infact never heard of it. but i have just bought some from a really good veg shop near me & am going to cook it tomorrow, is this ok to stir fry with other veg??
@webcajun thanks Donald, i will try them that way today will let you no how they taste! your vids are great by the way. you have a great lifestyle "would love to see your garden" cheers mark
Hey, awesome video! I am from Canada and okra really isn't popular here at all and I had some down in Tennessee a few months ago and I came back and grew some through the summer. I eat them raw, cooked, however they are, and thanks for the tips on the okra! Thanks a WHOLE lot!
Have you tried pickling some? Pickled Okra with a few hot wax peppers thrown in the jar with em is really, really good. Also, check out my video on the "Microwave Okra". Easy and quick......... Donald
Yes actually, I ate at a restaurant in Gatlinburg called The Pedlar and they have a salad bar where they served pickled okra and it's really good. Kind of like dill pickles without such a strong taste. And I will watch your video on the microwaved okra. I'm already planning on trying it. Also, do you have any recipes you would recommend for big meals consisting of mainly okra? Thanks a lot Donald
I've really been putting off doing some cooking videos but have had so many request for real Cajun recipes I may make an Okra Gumbo video this fall or winter....... Donald
the seed you sent me is growing fast i cant wait to try some gave my brother the rest to grow out on are farm i cant wait to try some new ways of eatting it . you know i am a misplaced yankee we didnt eat it in ohio lol
Someone stopped by today to see how the garden was doing and told me she tried the microwave okra recipe and loved it. She had several other people try it and they all said it was great. I think you'll like it too. Pickling the small ones isn't bad either....... Donald
Well that all depends on how early you get a frost or freeze. It's probably too late right now but if you have the seed, roll the dice. I have some planted that's about 4 inches tall and a few about 2 ft. tall. The smaller ones I don't think will make but I do expect to harvest from the larger ones. August 1st is the recommended deadline for okra in Louisiana. Where do you live?
"Plenty of beverages." hahahaha....I got that covered. Hey webcajun, just wanted to drop a line and tell you that I really enjoy your videos and website. You've inspired me to garden. I have my first one ever this year. I'm going to go a bit bigger next year. Keep the videos coming and thanks for all the tips!!!
Your first garden, that's great. Each year you'll learn a little more and one day you'll realize just how easy it is. Full sun, plenty fertilizer, water, keep the weeds down and you'll do just fine. Oh and plenty liquids of course.
That's a hard question to answer. It depends on a couple of factors. How big are the plants and how big are you picking the pods? Those 6 lbs. came off of about 150 plants that have just started to produce. They're about 24-36" tall and most of those pods were small. If you're asking how much should you plant for your own use, I'd say a few doz. plants would give you all the okra you'd want. They'll make all summer long.
I cut a few up for frying today and had them for supper. Now that we're starting to get those afternoon showers pretty regular some of my tomatoes are starting to split. Looks like I'll have to start picking them a lot greener than I have been. Glad you enjoy the videos. Thanks ...... Donald
I never had okra. I think are growing season is to short for it. Are nights have been in the 40's barley reaching 70 during the day. Send some heat my way.
That would be way too cool for okra it likes heat and plenty of it. Wish I could send you some of these 90+ degree days with a real feel temp of 100+. High humidity is the killer down here in Louisiana. With that little shower we had yesterday it's going to be a muggy one today.
You should have shown some footage of you cutting....I think you would have had some interesting comments about riding in the cart while cutting! (I would have like to see it myself!)....Greg
Hey Donald, Like you implied, picking in the heat is always a little easier with a coor's light.....uh, you meant water! I'm finally getting a rain so my first cutting of okra tomorrow should be pretty decent. Thanks for the videos!......Greg
Got a little rain this afternoon also. Maybe a 1/4" so far. Still hearing thunder so we may get a little more. My okra is still small and just starting to produce. I picked this mess off my golf cart. 400 ft. in less than 30 minutes. That's a record for me cause it usually takes a couple of hours with all the breaks I take. Wish it would stay about this height so I could use the cart all the time......Donald
