  • Hey, awesome video! I am from Canada and okra really isn't popular here at all and I had some down in Tennessee a few months ago and I came back and grew some through the summer. I eat them raw, cooked, however they are, and thanks for the tips on the okra! Thanks a WHOLE lot!

  • Have you tried pickling some? Pickled Okra with a few hot wax peppers thrown in the jar with em is really, really good. Also, check out my video on the "Microwave Okra". Easy and quick......... Donald

  • Yes actually, I ate at a restaurant in Gatlinburg called The Pedlar and they have a salad bar where they served pickled okra and it's really good. Kind of like dill pickles without such a strong taste. And I will watch your video on the microwaved okra. I'm already planning on trying it. Also, do you have any recipes you would recommend for big meals consisting of mainly okra? Thanks a lot Donald

    - Sebastian

  • I've really been putting off doing some cooking videos but have had so many request for real Cajun recipes I may make an Okra Gumbo video this fall or winter....... Donald

  • Someone stopped by today to see how the garden was doing and told me she tried the microwave okra recipe and loved it. She had several other people try it and they all said it was great. I think you'll like it too. Pickling the small ones isn't bad either....... Donald

  • Hey Webcajun, Do you think you can still grow Okra in the End of aug? Anyhow, Keep up the EXELLENT WORK!

  • Well that all depends on how early you get a frost or freeze. It's probably too late right now but if you have the seed, roll the dice. I have some planted that's about 4 inches tall and a few about 2 ft. tall. The smaller ones I don't think will make but I do expect to harvest from the larger ones. August 1st is the recommended deadline for okra in Louisiana. Where do you live?

  • I live in Vancouver Bc and the first frost here is Nov 2

  • Way too late for your area.

  • Thank you very much :D

    Keep up the superb work!

  • Have you had luck growing Okra? I live in White Rock and would like to give it a try.

  • Found you last night. Planted my very frist backyard garden. Great job with your utube site. Please keep it up.

    Russ.

  • Thanks Russ ...... Donald

  • you are the man ,,,

  • Great Job as always. I really enjoy the videos.

  • Thanks, I enjoy making them.

  • "Plenty of beverages." hahahaha....I got that covered. Hey webcajun, just wanted to drop a line and tell you that I really enjoy your videos and website. You've inspired me to garden. I have my first one ever this year. I'm going to go a bit bigger next year. Keep the videos coming and thanks for all the tips!!!

  • Your first garden, that's great. Each year you'll learn a little more and one day you'll realize just how easy it is. Full sun, plenty fertilizer, water, keep the weeds down and you'll do just fine. Oh and plenty liquids of course.

  • Hey webcajun....how many plants does it take to get 6 lbs of okra?

  • That's a hard question to answer. It depends on a couple of factors. How big are the plants and how big are you picking the pods? Those 6 lbs. came off of about 150 plants that have just started to produce. They're about 24-36" tall and most of those pods were small. If you're asking how much should you plant for your own use, I'd say a few doz. plants would give you all the okra you'd want. They'll make all summer long.

  • thank you!!! i just got my seeds today... :) :) i'm going-a-plantin'!

  • I have never eaten Okra ill get some and try it.

  • To really get a taste of it try to find some fresh okra, not the one in the can.

  • fry it well... awesome!!!

  • It's been years since I had fried okra (good eating). in N.C., we had some really high temp.

in the beginning of June and it dried up my potatoes. everything else actually did well.

looks like you're having sucess in your garden this year. great work and great videos.

  • I cut a few up for frying today and had them for supper. Now that we're starting to get those afternoon showers pretty regular some of my tomatoes are starting to split. Looks like I'll have to start picking them a lot greener than I have been. Glad you enjoy the videos. Thanks ...... Donald

  • I never had okra. I think are growing season is to short for it. Are nights have been in the 40's barley reaching 70 during the day. Send some heat my way.

  • That would be way too cool for okra it likes heat and plenty of it. Wish I could send you some of these 90+ degree days with a real feel temp of 100+. High humidity is the killer down here in Louisiana. With that little shower we had yesterday it's going to be a muggy one today.

  • That looked so delicious...Okra is one of my favorite veggies. Thanks for the post, i enjoyed. it :)

  • I like my okra fried or in a gumbo. Fried ...... I like to cut it about 3/4 of an inch long to really get the taste of the okra.

  • You should have shown some footage of you cutting....I think you would have had some interesting comments about riding in the cart while cutting! (I would have like to see it myself!)....Greg

  • I might do that.

  • Hey Donald, Like you implied, picking in the heat is always a little easier with a coor's light.....uh, you meant water! I'm finally getting a rain so my first cutting of okra tomorrow should be pretty decent. Thanks for the videos!......Greg

  • Hey Greg,

Got a little rain this afternoon also. Maybe a 1/4" so far. Still hearing thunder so we may get a little more. My okra is still small and just starting to produce. I picked this mess off my golf cart. 400 ft. in less than 30 minutes. That's a record for me cause it usually takes a couple of hours with all the breaks I take. Wish it would stay about this height so I could use the cart all the time......Donald
