  • i think the issue with the Blue Gropers (blue wrasse) is that over here in NSW it's illegal to plugg them because they are soo dopey you can hand feed them. also there is a $20,000 fine to taking one.

but i under stand that they can be quite flighty over in WA and that its completely legal to grab one.

good fish and i hope this clears up some shit

  • @MrLazyj It is a wierd debate this one. It's the same with people who shoot sharks or wobbies etc. Everyone has a view point. Blues over here are much the same as Dhuies, Baldies, Queenies and other dermersals. If you sit on the bottom they will come in to check you out. I aim just to get enough fish to have a feed for me and the family for a couple of nights. We move about and don't hammer spots. At present the Blues are a legal catch as are Baldies, Pinks, Dhuies etc. I recon nets do more harm

  • @dstick1 it's not really that weird. it's just that eastern blue groper are illegal to take and western are not. they are pretty much a different species. however in NSW the blue groper is our state fish, and clearly anyone who has commented negatively about taking blues are from places where you can't

  • @MrLazyj I understand what you are saying, but the debate rages over here as well and not all comments are from the eastern states. The same noises are made about spearing on gas etc. I guess my point is that who are we to criticize others about thier enjoyment of a legal activity. It would be like me having a crack at people who spear crayfish. I appreciate your input, wierd was probably the wrong choice of word. I'm all for sustainable fishing. I enjoy the sport and eating the prizes cheers

  • you guys are awesome. i like the new gun!!

  • @matthewrogers897 Mate it is a ripper, Skip is happy with it. We have been using a new weapon of late that has been a ball tearer! will be posting new videos soon :)

  • nice vid mate. dont worry about the haters that just jealous coz they dont have the skill to spear fish like that themselves, if i see a nice groper there is no way im not gonna shoot it!

  • @rhysospear Cheers mate, We've got a pretty thick skin these days. I just laugh that people think Blues are the only fish that will swim right up to you when you are diving. We try not to over indulge ourselves.

Cheers for watching the vids :)

  • you guys are real geniuses.. spearing the friendliest fish on the reef.. takes real talent when they swim right to you...

  • @dhempton Well Spotted Sport. Lucky we have your expert knowlege and sharp eye keeping a watch over the ocean. Well now that we have been exposed Guess that rules out us chasing Dhuies, Baldies and all the other friendlies swimming right up next to us. Better go and buy bait hey and rip them up from depth randomly.

  • @dhempton dude...shut up. lots of fish swim around divers, its called curiosity.

  • you guys are really talented.. spearing the friendliest fish on the reef... geniuses..

  • @dhempton You forgot to mention good looking also :)

  • Great Vid mate, i love your speargun!!!

  • @spearo144 Cheers for that, the Riffe rocks. Just bought an Aimrite to complement it :)

  • ledge point. google it!

  • 8iiipii[

    ;k'k;'

  • Exactly!

  • Mate just awsome vid. looks like an awsome area for some big fish.

  • Cheers for that mate, was a ripper spot and we really got fed well LOL. Took just enough for a good cook up and left plenty for next time!!

  • LOL @ 1:32 the guy has the same expression as the fish hahaha

  • Ha ha ha Classic! I'll have to let him know. Cheers for that - cracked me up!

  • haha anytime man anytime, great video by the way, looks like you guys had a great time and caught some real beautys!

  • Yeah i got a reel on my gun so can jus unclip da line and pull it trough just li dat. Kinda overkill sometimes here in lana'i hawaii lol.

  • i have the same barb set up on my riffe and it has trouble coming out after securing the fish. nice fish btw

  • Mahalo for the comments, These days I have a shark clip on my bungee and unclip my shot line from the gun and push the spear through and drag the shot line through the fish rather than try and pull the spear back through the fish. Makes life way easier. The fish was great chew!! Cheers for watching

  • I LOVED WA...great beaches, nice reefs...would gove to go back.

thx for uploading some nice vid.

looks like you ate well after these hunts.

  • Cheers for that, WA is a very nice part of the world no doubt, we are very privileged to live and fish here for sure. The wooden guns were out in force LOL. The fish were great eating, the family was very pleased with our days efforts. That lot fed three familys well!! Thanks for watching!

  • Hiya mate, brilliant video. Im coming over to Oz in June on a working holiday (tree surgeon) and was planning on flying into Sydney and working my way upto Cairns. I hadn't even really given WA much of a thought to be honest, but this video makes me think twice big time! is the spearing pretty good in WA in general and do you guys normally hunt reef fish or pelagics?

    Cheers Ian

  • Hey Ian, Thanks for the comments, Glad you enjoyed. Here in WA we can Hunt both pelagics and reefies. It's a big landmass with a wicked Biodiversity. Common pelagics include Dolphin fish, Mackerel, Tuna, Kingfish, Australian Salmon, Trevally, Amberjack Samson fish. There is plenty of reefies. Have a look at some of my videos and check out my subscriptions / friends for more videos giving you a snap shot on what is on offer. Also google Spearfishing Down Under Magazine for more info. Cheers

  • Looks like i am going to have try and get residency! i don't think a year will be anywhere long enough to have a good crack at spearing in Australia. What thickness suits and what size guns do you guys tend to use? i'm guessing 3mm and 120cm/ 140cm. . .

  • Mate you'd need at least a year to get round Australia for sure. To be fair, If you love water and out doors life style Aussie is a great place to live! Freediving most people wear 3mm suits on ave , Though up north in the tropics people go less, wear Rashies etc. Reef country people using 90/100cm, Open water 160cm and all rounders 140cm is common. 120-140cm is a blend. Most my mates are 130/140. I love my Riffe Islander LOL and just Load as many rubbers as I need, I do love the 8mm Spear!

  • just so you know mate, what your seeing isn't legal everywhere in australia. It is totally illegal to shoot blues in NSW. make sure you know the rules as they will change throughout your travells.

  • Good point to make, What you are seeing here is Western Blue Grouper and not Eastern Blue Grouper, different fish different rules. Another Difference is you are not allowed to spear Cray fish in some states like WA, but in QLD you are. Always check your local Fisheries Dept rules, 4 catch limits, sizes and filleting and no go zones. Everything thing you see here is perfectly legal in West Coast region WA, we even rang Fisheries from the boat to confirm that we were allowed to keep Big boy!

  • Hey guys I have just started SF and i absoloutley love it!

But can anyone give me some tips on how to hold my breath longer and how to equalize my ears properly cheers =]

    Great vid by the way!

  • Hey there, thanks for the feedback. Tips for improving your Breath hold. There are freediving clubs and people with experience who can help you train your body for freediving. There is a lot to learn on how to be effiecient with your air, how to relax and how2 minimize risks of shallow water blackout. Equalizing ears, things that help include a Low volume mask eg Mares mattrix mask as example. If you are having problems get your ears checked by diving acredited Doctor to make sure your ears R OK

  • Okay cheers mate.

  • No probs sent a PM with way more details as not enough room here to really answer your questions fully due to word count! Good luck, welcome to the club LOL!

  • nice vid. hope those blues were on different days coz it is only 1 per boat lol. or is it diffrent were your diving from? wat was the bigges blue there? how much it tip the scales at?

  • Different rules down here, we actually rang Fisheries while on the boat to double check, we were allowed 1 fish each and boat was allowed a mixed bag limit of cat1 fish! The big blue was over 30kgs. Fattest thing we ever filleted LOL, about 1.2 meters long. Thanks for watching, hope you had a laugh!

  • great vid!!!
