Hey, all of you just calm down!!! I use the same "smudging technique" (and I learned it from Mark Crilley himself) and I also sometimes use "reference pictures" when I need ideas! I bet they aren't traced! BTW, I think your an awesome drawer! :)

first off: smudging the lines is unprofessional and a bad shading technique, it doesn't really shade, it just makes a mess.

secondly, in order to teach someone how to draw something, go through the entire rough sketch process as well, not just the final dark outline.

theres such a thing as guid lines

you draw them light so you know exactly were to darken them ect

they are not trace lines..and further more many successful artist know better than to just Draw extreamly dark lines straight of the bat untill the drawing is perfected..
