I was a big fan of David Letterman in the 80's, but I had never seen this before.
Carol Channing was such a good sport- going along with the "morning show" parody and playing to the crowd during her exercises. "He's not offended, he's a doctor." Very funny stuff and priceless reactions from Dave.
Capped off with a totally random bumper of "Next Week: Polynesian Week At The Mall" this had me in tears I laughed so much. Thanks for sharing this clip!
Yup, like others have said this is a show-length spoof Dave did on his Late Night show. The 'gimick' being that most viewers were watching the show on VHS in the morning after taping it the night before. Ha!
For me, Letterman's Late Night will always be the gold standard for network TV comedy. It was modern edgy and cutting edge, and still holds up all these years later. It's impossible to beat.
This was the most awesome show! It was live and Dave was totally impromptu and hilarious. Late Night with David Letterman was a pale imitation of that show.
This WAS Late Night with David Letterman! You're probably thinking this was Letterman's short-lived daytime talk show, "The David Letterman Show", but this was actually a gag-episode of Late Night with David Letterman where he pretends to be hosting a daytime talk show called "The Morning Show".
Dave used to really mess with your head. It used to be, when you'd watch his show, you'd never know what you'd get.
He did a variety show one night, "The Summertime Sunshine Happy Hour."
Another night he did a "Reverse Image Telecast," because science had allegedly discovered a way to transmit a reverse image. And, all night, the picture was backwards.
I remember all those shows (anyone have the Summertime Sunshine... episode that they wanna post?).
The rotating show was probably funnier in concept than in reality (but still amusing; I remember the guest reacting to their upside-down image on the studio monitors).
Yes. I remember the episode where the picture did a complete 360 degree rotation. Sir Peter Ustinov was the guest and made some witty comments about his appearance upside down.
This was obviously a parody Dave did in 1985on Late Night of his 1980 show. That show, BTW, was called "The David Letterman Show", not "The Morning Show". "The Morning Show" was on WABC in New York which later became "Live With Regis and Kathie Lee" in 1988.
Sorry, this segment is not from David Letterman's 1980 talk show, which did air mornings on NBC. This clip is from one of Dave's many theme shows from Late Night with David Letterman. In the mid '80s, Dave did a one shot parody episode of morning talk shows like the Today Show and Good Morning America (complete with a perky co-hostess) as a courtesy to those fans who taped Late Night and watched it in the morning. His 1980 morning talk show had no co-hostess.
I can confirm that this clip is from the regular "Late Night With David Letterman" show. It was one of his occasional goofs, like when he did the "It's too hot to do a real show" from his office. This was a parody of a morning show, but people today will be understandably confused because Dave did actually have a morning show once upon a long ago.
I love 7:02-7:17!! You can see a preview of Carol's choreography in "Jam Tomorrow, Jam Yesterday" from the "Alice in Wonderland" TV movie (search Carol Channing is Better Than You to see it in the film).

Geez, I remember when this aired originally. Actually we had most of the episodes from 1985 on tape and regrettably taped over them.

I wish Dave hadn't cut Carol short. That sounds like the best story ever.

Another night he did a "Reverse Image Telecast," because science had allegedly discovered a way to transmit a reverse image. And, all night, the picture was backwards.
Another night, the picture slowly rotated.
I wish he still did stuff like this.

Yes I know, but as you see in the clip... this episode was called "The Morning Show" Even though it is obviously "Late Night with David Letterman".

No, this was not his late night show. Before he went to nights, David Letterman did a morning show. Started during the summer of 1980.
