Batteries for laptops ARE rechargable.

Only if you charge them too long (or all the time), they can no more hold the charge, so they are no longer rechargable.

That's when this trick should come into action.

Lithium Ion batteries have a life span just like any battery for one. For another, lithium ion batteries have a poor cycle life. Each charge creates desposits in the electrolyte which reduce the capacity of the battery to diminish. The internal resistance of the battery also increases with age so the output voltage and current will reduce and thus so will the time that the battery can operate the device for.

Trickle charging is probably one of the best things for a Lithium Ion battery.

Lithium ion batteries have a cycle life for which they are good (roughly 300-500). You are NOT supposed to fully discharge the battery. The typical lifespan of a LiIon battery is usually 2-3years.
