  • This is just one of those songs that are better live. Ive always liked the song from the radio, but LOVE it here. Some other songs Ive noticed better with the live recordings are Wagon Wheel and Jane Says....so damn good!!!

  • i saw him in about 72 or 73 it was totally amazing.

  • were FIVE, now we are SIX 24/41

105 - are all the same,

106 - WE ARE FROM THE SOCIETY.

    107 - RAIATEA is an island;

    108 - Also called HAVAI'I.

were FIVE, now we are SIX 25/41

  • This song just oozes decadence.

  • I guess three people walk on the boring side.

  • Cocaine is a Hell of a drug.

  • a great song, perfect for the time, and still apropos today... transending ... a sign of great art!

  • * * * * *

  • I have seen Lou twice, the first show at the Hammersmith odeon back in the late 70's totally sucked, ... 20 years later at Universal Amp in L.A. was totally superlative.

    Go figure huh.

  • LOVE THIS SONG!

  • I said "Hey Lou! Take a Walk on the Wild Side!" Love this song! Great version, thanks for posting!

  • Better than Bob Zimmerman's "Like a Rolling Stone"

  • Yep! best version

  • Saw Lou at the Roxy, LA, late seventies / early eighties. The Roxy theater is incredible, intimate setting, seats around 300, small tables and booths.

The second time we saw him was the late show on a two show per night gig. Did not get seated until around 1:30 AM. They rocked us till 5:30 in the morn. Lou and his band cannot be compared to any other, they are in thier own realm. The time was when all things just fall into place; perfect. Lou ROCKS. It was a special time.....

  • @iloveoregon5411 that is so awesome! I wish I had seen him, especially when you did, sounds like a great time!

  • @preshtime

When the gig finally started we were waiting for Lou to come out on the stage, I myself expected to see him as he looked back in the days of "Berlin". Lou came out in a black tee shirt and was totally buffed out, I mean he was totally cleaned up. However, his bass player was really high on something, coudn't play. Two songs into the gig they took a break and came back out with no bass player. It was OK to see Lou clean, he might have been gone by now if he had not.

  • See, there was thing called 'radio' and some of remember hearing songs like this on iot.....giving head as it were...

  • I am so proud that l still have this album...go there Lou!

  • i saw him in Montreal Canada in about 1973 amazing...Love Lou we use to have so much with this song...

  • Can I Kick It?

  • the great rock n roll animal

i am 13 and i love him and hate justin bieber

    so rock

  • oh my , wow, TIMELESS !!

  • i used to have this damn vinyl album!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1damn german import,i wasthe only person i knew that had it..ever...some cheap bootleg with charlies girl, lisa says etc....but now its friggin gone!!!!!!!!!!!1 dont know wherre to get a copy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!pissed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • why the hell does he do it all disjointed in these live versions. like yeah its always good in live versions to vary it up, but the quality of the song is the way he sung it in the recorded version, just hell chilled and in time.

  • honestly...to see this song live, outdoors, at sunset, with the manmade lake and roman (grecian?) columns of the univ. buffalo campus in the background, fallfest 1986, was really something nice (of course, lou doesn't allow local bands as opening acts, so he was trumped by my friends 'the moment' who had been scheduled but nixed by 'the coolest man alive' (???)--they rocked the washboard, acoustic git and standup bass aside a campus building afterwards...

  • Can anyone remember what song had the original earlier "do duh do duh do" backup vocals song by some women? Or was it just a musical riff in some song? I'm thinking maybe an old soul or Motown song, Jackie Wilson, or Chuck Jackson or Shirelles or something?

  • @gonzocurt The Thunder Thighs from the UK, were the backup singers on this song.

  • definately the best version :) better than original

  • Do you have the MP3 to this? Send it to me, please.

  • grandiosa ciaoooo

  • LOU used to be the KOOLEST DUDE MAN. He tries to be so politacally correct now a days that it is hard to believe it's the same DUDE. This is the lou i love... the REBELL, thanks for posting DUDE.

  • Does ANYBODY remember The Velvet Underground? Check him out there.

  • @Chipgirl222 course we do

  • Everybody must get stoned ;)

  • Very good live version. Absolute preference was the original album version, but this was VERY good. This was enjoyable alternative.

  • F"IN AMAZING!!!

  • this is definately the best version! Lou Reed is the man. does anyone know if there's a video of this performance?

  • this is brilliant! i love how this song's so simple and great! And Lou really does it well, doesn't he?!

  • I love this performance. Amazing!

  • funky guitar - love this version, thanks for posting! Makes it a disco classic along the same lines as the Stones Miss You

  • it was a few years before disco though.. also lou's music is too gloom and introspective to be disco...

  • this is raw...woooo.......check out my vid of "Lou Reed - perfect day (animated)"..

  • That was reality.

Now a days a censorship guy walks up to anything of value puts a huge censorship stamp on it. Then he walks back into a Church and talks about his role in local government to all the little girlys who are willing to kiss his ass due to his so called "importance".

This same guy who preaches how clean cut we should be pays for lap dances at the local titty bar and buys call girls weekly while drinking himself into oblivion nightly because he cant handle his own hypocrisy...

  • ADR, you are a fuckhead.

  • There's far more censorship coming from the PC crowd than anywhere else these days. They even censor religion now.

If there's any higher form of hypocrisy, it's the thought that limited speech = freedom.

Lou Reed could never have sung this song today.

  • simplicity is best musically

  • The very best version! Outstanding! Why don´t they play this one on the radio?//Petroff

  • can't write "Lou Reed" without the first part: "The Great"!

  • Could we get a date for this amazing piece of music?

    Thanks a lot for posting!

  • 1974 ;-)

How this escaped the censors of the time...

  • guess it was too clever ;p

  • I bought this album after seeing the concert in New zealand about 1974. hope this helps

  • classic, great performance, like this laid back voice ... kind of seductive...

  • Hmmm Great song, but I don't really like this version...

  • Great performance, one of the best.

  • That is one stoned Jew!

  • What does the fact that he's Jewish got to do with anything?

  • he's groovy man ^^.

  • the first time i got properly stoned was to this tune.i still get a buzz hearing now

  • right on.

  • prob one of the best songs ever

  • I know so true

  • God made this song and chose Lou Reed to perform it in order to make the "Coca Cola " people to see what life is all about.!!

  • agreed

  • lovely phrase!

  • his voice, so cool...

  • one of those song i can listen to over and over again...

  • I love it colored girls! I love colored girls!

  • This is one of the most brilliant songs ever written - gritty and real ....

  • yep and unique

  • definitely! one of my fav songs EVER! 1st time heard in the netherlands on a trip^^

  • The funny thing is that it was such a big hit. Drag queens, gay hustling, speed, valium, back rooms, blowjobs - and America ate it up. I bet most people didn't know the lyrics and those who did probably didn't understand them.

  • Hi! You're right! I am a professional singer and have to get lyrics for my work - it is surprising - or maybe not - just how many songs have very interesting lyrics which are quite unclear on the recordings. Interpretation of words of songs, speeches, stories etc.etc. can be very difficult and personal. I have a uni. degree and am trained to "interpret" texts etc. This song does not try to disguise what it's about in my opinion!

Another clever one I like is the Stones' "Gimmee Shelter"

  • sweet az!!...just wish could c him perform thiz live version!!

  • It's on the record with Lou wearing a cool hat on the cover. LOU REED LIVE. It's a great album and was my first LOU ever!

  • That was my first Lou Reed album as well. I heard the studio version of this song on the radio, bought the lou reed live album because it was the only Lou record the store had, was blown away, wore the wax out and now over 30 years later I'm still a fan.

  • nice version

  • Amazing this song played on AM radio. Guess many people didn't listen to the lyrics. Hey babe ...

  • man those lyrics are fucked up

  • What really makes it suck now, is that it's censored now. Back in the day it wasn't that big of a deal, but now in a "more progressive" time it's suddenly bad?

In my belief censorship is what makes things bad, not the word or topic itself. You can't say it or talk about it and that puts a dirty feeling to it and then it's a four letter word. It's really backwards.

  • Well said man. Hit the nail on the head.

  • you hit the nail on the head there brother

  • cool

  • Love you always Lou

  • I like the part about little joe never giving it away. Nice version

  • YES!!!!!!
