Where did my comment of two months ago go?? You let two Trifonov fans argue about how high in the pantheon he stands, but you delete my comment about the pianist whose video we are actually listening to? FAIL.
I'm a big fan of him but I can't help but think he might look a little like Hugo Chavez when he's on his death bed. Oh and his voice sounds a little like that of a dyke.
I love Argerich ... once was seated on the stage about 15 feet from her. (She seemed VERY self-possessed and I would not have had the courage to jump on her.)
@rubestuh I find Rubinstein s sound a little too dry for me.He used to spray hair lacker on the keys before he played apparently it made him grip the keys in a certain way.Personally I just like the lovely smell.
@chadmaster410 I'm more in Rubinstein's corner than you are on that one, chadmaster. I think he had one of the great touches of the 20th century ... but to each his own. BTW, the hair spray just made his fingers less inclined to slip on the keys, a problem aggravated by his very thick fingers.
@rubestuh I ve heard some very thoughtful playing by Rubinstein and can t deny he s on a league.Personally I prefer hairspray on my hair not my fingers.;)
I think horseracing is exactly what Trinov doesn t offer as compared to say Cziffra, he is more sensitive and just oozes music with sound from the past. Do you realise how good he is? and Grimaud is very pretty but does nothing for me. Baramboim is as profound as a 5 year old and has no shades in his playing.Argerich is more like Trifonov.Goulds Bach is superior to Periah. What do you want from a recital.I want to be over whelmed as if I was listening to Mr Horowitz.
@chadmaster410 When I say music is not a horse race, I am referring to you and the way you want to rank people. Someone comes in first and the rest are all also-rans.
I like Trifonov, and Argerich, and Horowitz.
Grimaud doesn't do too much for me.
I find your dismissal of Barenboim and Perahia a bit Philistine.
@rubestuh the way I rank people is no hore race just I look for REALQuality, yes IM sure Periah and co are fine musicians but I hear no poetry.I had a CD of Periah playing Schumann and it was the most insulting playing I ve ever heard.bang bang no phrase no corners to hide.Just notes. I through it away. My teacher was a pupil of Yakov Flier and he is a fine musician because of the sound especially.Musn t forget the piano should be used like an orchestra .And tone can be personal too.
@rubestuh Somebody becomes first in the Tchaikovsky comp because the jury have their head screwed on. I once had a CD of Periah and it was so ugly I thre it away. MY teacher was a pupil of Flier and I never made it because of many complications including mental health problems but at least I know a great master when I hear one.And I have far to go.loll.Infact I ll never get there! But hey Im not bothered because Trifinov does the work 4 me.
Well, I won't argue about Trifonov. Somewhere on this board, I've called him "great," so you're preaching to the choir.
I'm surprised you find Perahia's phrasing weak. For me, he sometimes over-phrases so the music feels a bit manipulated. (You know, he became a much bigger pianist after working with Horowitz in the late 1980s. In fact, he was the last person outside the Horowitz household to see the maestro alive.)
You won't go wrong with Trifonov, so god bless you, chadmaestro.
@rubestuh yes I love to preach and spread the word.as IM a failed concert artist then I can still know a real master at the keyboard.and btw Periahs sound is not ugly quite clear actually but he doesn t seem to vary timbr.I don t dislike him.I like some Pollini especially early stuff at the competition.I met Argerich once after a concert and we got on really well I turned up with a blck leather waistcoat and pink tie and jumped on her.lol
@chadmaster410@rubestuh How did you two manage to have a youtube discussion without devolving into name calling? Bravi!! Anyway, to comment on the pianist featured in this video, I would add that I think Perahia's a good musician, but I find his Bach rather bland. A bit too metronomic, especially in those expressive sarabandes. Heard him play 6th partita live and was annoyed to hear him take every repeat piano. In the gigue, though, finally a more aggressive and angular sound - perfect!
@705JRC do not like to argue. Every person has their own opinion based on what they like or have heard is very good.I refer to sheep audiences because really most of them are not real musicians and haven t been to conservatoire. I have taught when I could and have had a great emphasise on tone and phrasing. And that is what I look for but it is nothing without a bit of excitement or profoundness.
counterpoint is counterpoint .Why not talk about your boring playing. The man that won this years Tchaikovsky lets the music tell a story he does not play notes only with no colour.
Daniil Trifonov is a fine player who certainly does not play mere notes - I'm with you on that point. But I can't see how anyone could suggest that Perahia plays notes only, nor how anyone could suggest there is no colour in his playing. If anything, I sometimes find he overplays.
@rubestuh a fine player there s more music in one note by Trifonov than a whole work of Periah Baramboim and Grimaud. They are mere robots who would not even get through the first round of the Tchaikovsky comp. Sorry but Trinov gets me excited and makes me cry and it s all from the composer. Counterpoint is not a hard subject Periah. a moron really.
Well, now we know you prefer Trifonov, and nothing wrong with that. As you know, I don't agree with you about Perahia. I think you underestimate both Barenboim and Grimaud. Barenboim is a very profound musician. I like Grimaud less, but I would never call her a 'robot' -- she plays with deep feeling, in my personal view. However, I don't personally rank her with the others we've mentioned. But that's just my (subjective) view.
Nice, but not much video of his fingers on the keys. Mr. Perahia speaks English although the other parts are not in English. Overall worthwhile but not compelling.
Esta gajo a tocar Bach, precisava de um gato morto no focinho.

Perahia introduces romanticism into Bach's keyboard works, which I think that's the most wonderful stuff.
hutianyi2007 5 months ago
He really makes it clear, that Bach is SPEAKING through his music, and every trill is important for the meaning. Exiting. Very deep.
