I dont get these people.... cycil mudered a woman and was called a saint??
This can not be religion. Over time A lot of innocent people died in the name of relagion, in the hands of these so called god loving 'saint's.
Even today, many people die because of blind religious belief. ( dont belive me? google it ).
Dont get me wrong... I do belive in God. I just dont belive in the divide religion causes. We are all created by the same God. No matter what name we call him by.
don't you love films that realy shows the ugly face of christianity and, by an extention, of all religions?
I do!
Atheism, critical thinking, always inquiring, skepticism, INTELLIGENCE... and, above all, science: THESE ARE THE WAYS THAT LEADS YOU TOWARD WHAT IS TRUE, IN LIFE AND IN UNIVERSE
@Cacacos Ohhh man I feel sorry for you :) I don't know where you're from but here in Bulgaria there is this writer Svetoslav Minkov that exposes the naive view that science is something that can never be wrong and is the key to all, etc. You should watch the movie Gattaca it shares similar motifs with his books.
@Cacacos these people weren't following their religion properly. this isn't an "ugly face" of christianity - it ISN'T true christianity - there is no compulsion in religion, get your facts straight.
you can always inquire, even if you're religious - you can be intelligent enough to know that there is a boundary of unknown which no one can cross with the help of science as you are suggesting.
religion without science is blind
science without religion is lame.empiricism can only take you so far
i am a Christian but this movie amongst other historical 'issues' makes u question things. it is unbelievable the atrocities people commit in the name of religion
its a good thing the library was burnt, its a good thing, religious fervor gripped the world... cause the ash, blood, tears and sweat have never stopped since, and never will.. the world will never know peace.. ever.
@noushk18 sarcasm ? >< well atleast u get the idea.. that no one has the right to kill another.. Although it wouldve been funny, if Hero's steam combustion engine, was re-discovered earlier, compared to, 1200 years later.. the library of Alexander, is a tragic instance of sarcasm.. if the world is round, u'd fall off. Science is born, from the human grace to question.. so is religion born, from the ashes of that same grace, to question.. or not to question.
BOTH, MOVIE AND MUSIC JUST EXCELENT. I LOVE HYPATIA'S LIFE... SHE LIVES WITH PASSION FOR HIS WORK. WE CAN LEARN VERY MUCH ABOUT PASSION MEANS WITH HER
@GABY24MARCH ... perhaps not. for those who go beyond the realm of the day, of the bounds that restrains the passage of knowledge, impart the protection of the world, of the soul, and of the laws of life. if we, be it enginners, scientists, ecologists, politicians.. drove our lives with passion. the world as we know it, would not exist. she, hypatia, reminds us, of the ethos and pathos of man.
The next person to discover what Hypatia knew was Kepler - almost 1400 years later! This should be a warning to those who espouse religuous fervor (i.e. Creationism, Intelligent Design)! It will send us back into the dark ages!
@gotribe78 but the religious fervor that the Christians had back in those days wasn't exactly correct. Christian women are allowed to teach but Hypatia was told they're not - the scriptures Cyril read were twisted, as Orestes said. So religious fervor isn't exactly a bad thing, if the right message is sent across.. so it won't necessarily send us back to the dark ages?
@gotribe78 And what's wrong with that? You speak blindly, the Middle Ages were a great time in human development. Chivalry, loyalty. Those virtues were highly praised. People didn't rely on slaves and therefore they came up with a lot of inventions to improve their daily lives, unlike people in the 17th and 18th century. All those tortures and bloodsheds and terrible plagues they are merely an exaggeration of contemporary filmmakers.
@DestroyerAlexandros Actually, this movie does the opposite of exaggerating Hypatia's fate. In truth she was skinned and burnt alive. And you ask what is wrong with that? What is wrong with genocide of thousands? Thess are not just stories made up by filmmakers, these are proven facts taken from history.
@AustenFugitive Same way they "proved" that in the Middle Ages they put an iron apple into your mouth which expanded until your jaw cracked. The postmodernist view on history is extremely naive and the belief that all previous generations were savages is just outrageous. People are just the same as 5000 years ago and the people that lived before us were just as tender and complex as us, if not more.
@DestroyerAlexandros I'm not sure what your point is. I'm not saying people then are worse than people now. Genocide is still happening today. I'm saying that they didn't just make up the wars and genocides which happened way back then.
@AustenFugitive This isn't genocide. Genocide is when people are exterminated because of their inherent genetic traits. I just wanted to give you a hint that a lot of the so called "horrors" of religious prosecution are mostly stylized products of modern day. Like I said, just as the Iron Maiden and the apple that was supposed to expand in your mouth - all supposed torture devices that turned out to have a different purpose.
Creationism and Intelligent Design are not the result of blind religious belief. Even in the Big Bang Theory the original materials had to have been created, unless we want to scrap the most basic laws of physics. With any belief system we can find people that abuse it, but that doesn't mean the belief system is at fault.
this story is true...so sad...hypatia is a inspiration... she devoted her life to science and philosophy for the better of mankind... but mankind never appreciate it because she's a woman and a pagan...
The ending broke my heart =( Was not fair!!!

@teddythebenny i dont understand your comment..
youre saying the library being burned is a good thing because it caused religious fervor?
but then youre saying blood tears and sweat have never stopped since it was burned, as if its a bad thing?
