You are a wonderful teacher! Very clear. I've been doing very simple crochet for years but am thrilled to be learning new things. I'm working on a circle rug but after about 7 rings (rows) i can't keep it flat. What is the guide for increasing? My circle keeps getting "ruffled" around the edges and i have to rip it all out and go back to row 7!! Help!
@MAWDRW increase by the same number of stitches in the first round for every round. If it begins to ripple, try increasing every other round. If it cups, then increase by more stitches.
It's really hard to know when i need to start the next round (i.e do a slip stitch). It's also really hard to remember if i started the previos round with an increase or not. Is there an easy way to find this out? I'm using a size 4.0 crochet hook so its quite small.. therefore very hard to see the individual rounds. Any suggestions? I know you mentioned the pi shape for the ss... but everything looks the same! :-(
@brentwood321 When using a smaller hook, use finer yarn. You can place a stitch marker in the first stitch of the round to see when you make a slip stitch.
do u do those loops loosely? i find after the first "layer" i have trouble finding the initial loops and VERY difficult to loop them over the yarn overs D:
@Rienei I'm not sure what you mean. You allow your crochet hook determine the size of your stitches. Do not pull the stitches tightly. It IS difficult to see that center circle that you work in, but once you get that first stitch, place each consecutive stitch next to the first one. This is why beginners should use a smooth non-fuzzy light colored yarn.
I love your tutorials, but in this video I find it hard to see where you are inserting the hook when you make the first single crochet, and then subsequent single crochets.
@wockynerd Sorry about that. It's difficult to show with single crochet because the stitches are smaller. check out the dc flat circle and then come back to this. Also Teresa of The Crochet Geek has an excellent tutorial on working in rounds with single crochet.
I have tried so many times to keep my circles flat and the way you explained what you were doing was such an eye opener and made so much sense! Thank you so so much!
I am a beginner and I have watched so many "how to crochet circles" that I've lost count but none were like this...I am proud to say I have made my first circle!!!! thank you so much for the tutorial!!!
@kritika1120JB The best way to get the most of tutorial videos is to watch them without having anything in your hands, then re- watch, holding your work. watch s tep, pause the video, do the stitch, watch the nest step, pause, do a stitch, etc.
if im on the 15th row how dc would i need between increases. i wabuts fine upto w30 there after i was off. eg. if im in the 15th row do i dc 15 then in creas ? making some round place mats i will need 30 row. Your videos have been great i never cacded and i have learn watching you .
@99lovingmom Your question is very difficult to read. Is English your second language? If so, I apologize. I appreciate the effort to use my language.
Answering your question, When You make increases and the piece lays flat, then you are doing good. If it cups, then you need to undo the crochet and increase more. If it ruffles, then undo the crochet and increase less.
I just wanted to update you and let you know that I tried this last night while making my baby hats and it worked great. This was so simple it made the hat look so great with a flat top I have watched so many videos and the hat looks wonderful. Thank you so much for this video.
@brandy2brandy I would start with thinking how many stitches you will use to make it lie flat divisible by six. Then the circle increases by six stitches evenly spaced around every row.
Hello! Just wanted to let you know that out of most tutorials to crochet a circle, yours makes the nicest circle!! Thank you so much for sharing and making me feel accomplished today! :)
@ross1955 I have a video for that called, "Finishing your crochet project."
I also have one called "Changing colors & adding new yarn."
Go to my channel by clicking on my user name. Then click the uploads and type the title into the search bar on my channel page. They are easier to see if you click the grid view (it looks like a tic tac toe board).
Hi, in the rounds were we increase every other stitch or every 2 stitches, does it matter which stitch has the increase? for example in round 3, does it matter if the first stitch has the increase or not? i.e. would the following 2 patterns give the same result?
- first stitch increase, second stitch regular, third stitch increase, etc...
- first stitch regular, second stitch increase, third stitch regular, etc...
Hello! I want to ask a question: it may ve a stupid thing but I wanted to know if it is possible to make a circle on basis 8. IS that possible? I'm not usre if it could cause the circle not to lie flat but to get sure I wanted to ask. Adn if it's possible, do I need a different logic behind the stiches? I wouldn't mind too much doing it like you described it in the video but I was just really curious!
@toxicfarma Yes you can. Just like an octagon is flat. Be sure to stagger your increases so it does not turn into an octagon. Do not start with 4 because the middle of your circle will have a bump. Start with the magic circle and do 8 stitches, increase in the same manner as shown here, but remember the stitch count will be a multiple of 8 and each round will have 8 more stitches than the round before it.
Your tutorials have been a very big help to both my daughter and I. Your a great teacher and instructor as I'm sure that all of your students (subscribers), would no doubt agree with me. Keep up the great tutorials. We look forward to your knowledgee and up coming videos! Thank you so much.
@ utuber618 and bethintx1: Agreed. You are a very good teacher. I'm learning crochet faster than i ever thought iw ould thanks to you. Thanks so much dearie! : )
You're a really good instructor. Now I know exactly how to identify the ss, the ch 1 and the first sc after I complete a round. Thank you. Keep the EXCELLENT tutorials coming.
sorry, but i think you go way to fast...does anyone know of any other videos tthat go at a slower more beginner friendly pace?

@Darr3nDav1s that is what pause & rewind is for. Also, if you learn the basic single crochet first, it will be easier to do the flat circle.

T01Millet 1 year ago
@T01Millet Yes. it's actually better to stagger the increases, but be sure to spread the increases around the circle evenly.
Round 2: increase in every stitch.
Round 3: 1 stitch between increases.
round 4: 2 stitches between increases.
round 5: 3 stitches between increases.
etc.
Bethintx1 1 year ago
Round 4 and 5 is it a 2x double crochet in every stitch - confused?
RustyTroller 1 year ago
@RustyTroller no. watch the video again without crocheting.
This is a single crochet video. round 2 results in 12 sc, round 3 in 18 sc, round 4 in 18 +6, etc.
Add one more stitch between increases on each round.
