  • Scotty you should mention safety more in your videos, I really like them but I've noticed you don't mention things like how brake fluid eats paint, so be careful around it, and to keep a bucket handy when draining as it's horrible for the environment. Keep up the good work.

  • Thanks Scotty your a life saver man! My dog chewed off my rear driver side break hose and both the filler hoses from my 97 Ford explorer and I really needed some refreshing on how to swap the hoses and bleed the breaks :) I'm jut hoping my breaks will have a bleeder screw and I won't have to use on of those suction kits :) thanks a million! Your videos actualy make a difrence trust me

  • This is why i get a mechanic to fix my car, because its a pain in the fuckin ass.

  • @blarson12 BUT, we mechanics get lots of money fixing em, and many people like to save money. Or, don't even have much money to spend in the first place.

  • @scottykilmer So your point is?

  • @blarson12 that's why I make these videos to make it easier for people to fix their own, you should take a course in inferring.

  • hey scotty, what if the brake lines aint clogged, that was the first thing i checked on my chevy suburban. the wheels pull to the right slightly. i had the alignment done and the only problem was it being out of camber. the wheels still pull

  • @tomtrek1986 then odds are the callipers are bad and sticking IF the alignment was done correctly.

  • Hey Scotty.excellent video as usua l! the only thing I would add is for people to always use jack stands whenever raising a vehicle..most people would know to do this , but just in case there are some that don't. (.especially when someone is going to be inside the car stepping on the brakes ,while your under it tighting the bleeder screw.)

keep up the good work !

    keep up the great videos!

  • perfect video. A note to add. You said "have someone press on the brakes" ( while bleeding them) etc. I need to note that when they do press on it,tell them do not let up until you retighten the brake bleeder,or it'll just suck more air in. Other then that. good video. :)

  • Scotty, would u buy a bmw? like shown in ur video? me as a beginner mechanic my opinion is audi an bmw is good from germany, volkswagon an benz is endless money pits an junk

  • @gmcarfreak well, add audi and bmw to your money pit list, cause they are no different than VW or benz, perhaps even worse in some respects.

  • is there no way you could have just cleaned the hose out so Great clips btw! :)

  • @exsosist123 no, they collapse, that things' almost 30 years old. Once collapsed they are shot.

  • i wish if had such a talented mechanic like u in our town !

  • Excelent videos thank you

  • Thanks for the video its just what started happpening to my car it pulls when I step on the gas and when I break. Maybe one is stuck a little wish me luck

  • You clearly know what you are talking about. Your videos are educational and entertaining. And you are a Ford guy. Subscribed.

  • I have no question, just a thanks for all your vids :+)

  • it's all logical

  • Thanks for your videos! I thought I knew a little about cars, but I learn something new with every video I watch from you. I'm saving tons! Thanks again!

  • What if the steering wheel consistently turns only slightly to the right side while braking, not as dramatic as shown in this video (from 12 o'clock to about 1 o'clock)? Its on e46 BMW, all stock, no accidents.

  • @MrShtirlitz often a front end alignment or worn front end part will do that.

  • I've seen this happen hundreds of times. Most of them are caused by clamping the rubber line. This literally cuts the inner liner and creates a one way check valve that prevents the fluid from either going in or coming out. If you still have that hose I'd be willing to bet thats what happened. If you're curious enough cut it down the middle and take a peak! :)

  • The drivers side hose was clogged, yet when you stopped in the beginning you pulled to the left. It should pull to the right.

  • @GraniteBees not always, it pulled to the left on that road the way it was pitched as that wheel continued to move on the left following the drainage of the road. which side pulls where is always dependant on many variables. that's why you check both sides before doing any work.

  • Hi skotty my car pull somtime right ans somtime left when I driving. I did not even press the brake. What is broken

  • @blummiiii the front end has serious wear, have it checked out as I show in my video "how to check your car's suspension"

  • Why the hell would a brake hose get clogged? What was clogging it?

  • @sbdem1986 old age, they collapse like the veins in a heavy smoker.

  • Hi, I dont know where to post a request but I wonder if you can make a video about how to install an "outer temperature-sensor" and the display in a volvo 940 ? Have a nice day

  • @farerse I make em as i fix actual cars. if I get one, I'll film it.

  • Only thin gi'd like to say is I hope you didn't get brake fluid on the paint of that bonnet from your gloves because that would SUCK.

  • @RelentlessIntentions there's hardly any paint left on this beemer. It's getting a full paint job when it runs fine.

  • @RelentlessIntentions DOT 5 Brake fluid does not eat paint. If this is DOT 3 or DOT 4 it will eat paint. But I'm sure Scotty had a can of brake clean handy either way.

  • can you do a video about putting a steering wheel on the rite way?

  • thanks scotty your the best.us non a holes really appreciate you.

  • i will always come here to get good expert tips and advice!

  • Great video Scotty. And thanks for taking the time to answer our questions via email!

  • hye scot...can you show to us about component inside the caliper brakes such as pistons and etc??if the pistons inside the brakes caliper is not working properly, what is need to do??

  • @hafizi5689 generally just buy a rebuilt calliper assembly, they cost so little these days, it beats trying to rebuild em yourself. Let the chinese dudes do the hard work, stuff costs so little that way.

  • Who doesnt love dirty hoes? j/k.. Another great video!

  • thanks scotty for your response :D

  • what about when the car pull when it hit a bump or uneven road??

  • @blackandwhiteslalom worn suspension parts, such as bad ball joints

  • @blackandwhiteslalom bad alignment will do that too

  • Hey Scotty 3:18 is that rear window electric? cool

  • scotty rules

  • I like the video

  • he also didnt mention that the alignment could be off. and that isnt the correct way to bleed the brakes. you have to pump the pedal until it gets hard, then open the bleeder screw and when you friend is helping you and the pedal goes to the floor...hold it there close to bleeder screw and then repeat process until all air is out.

  • @916MustangRacer Ah, it could also be tons of other things too. Wise Acre. I just went and stopped when I fixed this particular car. Get a life jack, make your own videos if you think you're so wise. Then I can comment on what you didn't talk about.

  • @scottykilmer hey scotty when are you going to teach classes ill pay big bucks to learn from you your great and i value everything i learn from

  • @916MustangRacer lol you're a fucktard !

  • Scotty Ur my new hero ! Lol keep up the great work

  • is it possible for something in the steering/suspension to cause a car to pull (or lean) slightly to one side when stopping? I know for sure all my brakes are good and the calipers are working as they should. or could it be possible my pads are worn down more on one side, or would that not make a difference?

  • @Vacmasterthegreat of course it is, you analyze the whole car till you find the problem and fix it. In this case, a hose fixed it.

  • Gotta love those old beemers!

  • Ok to Scotty & the commenters here's the deal. For as many videos Scotty's posted here it would just seem prudent to add some words and caution regarding safety. Overall the advice on these videos is intelligent from having 44 years of experience, however I add:

    1. When jacking any vehicle to work on it, always support with quality jackstands, a must!

    2. Generally speaking brakes line are very rusted and don't break loose this easily.

    3. Brake fluid is caustic to paint, use caution.

    Good luck!

  • @11234567890ajung NO, you can't do that, the computers are completely different.

  • Comment removed

  • scotty you the best

  • So what is the solution what do I have to change I mean do I have to change the Roter ,caliper, pads, break hoses.bearing ????????Thank you.

  • Can u give me step by step to take off a water pump in a honda accord 1991

  • @green6234 watch my video "replacing a timing belt on your car" cause you have to remove the timing belt to change that water pump. After taking the belt off as in the video, just unbolt the pump and bolt a new one in.

  • I probably would have never thought to check the brake lines.

  • good job scotty .and yes people lines do go bad

  • What about a, vibrating steering wheel?

  • @CalikingZX If your steering wheel is vibrating under braking you might have warped disc brake rotors. I believe Mr. Kilmer has a video about that also.

  • @trombe1990 no it doesn't vibrate when braking, it vibrates when i drive at the hwy or drive around 60-75mph. i am guessing it may be my tie rods or rack and pinion. what do you guys think?

  • Kilmer I don't mind that you haven't answered my Houston repair request, but why haven't you made a video about EVAP emission repair yet?, A lot of Charcoal Canisters break down, let me know.

  • @MicrosoftCPU3 the reason I haven't made evap repair videos is because you really need a dealer level scan tool and a smoke machine to make such repairs correctly. Without just wild guessing. And seeing that most people will never buy such expensive equipment, such videos would be useless for most people. and yes, cannisters do break down if you want to guess on an evap repair.

  • how woul u know if this was a probem on rear brakes?

  • damn dirty ol rotten hoe's

  • It's 2000 1.8 passat

  • When I lift my car to see if the bearings were any good and as I spin the wheel it seems like the caliper stops the wheel spin freely. The caliper is touching the roter why it happens on all wheels Please helppppppppppppppppp

  • @zfasakr they all drag a little with age, if they don't get hot and drag while driving, live with it.

  • That's one facked up BMW.

  • Comment removed

  • its a safety feature! its so you dont hit what ever it is that made you slam on your brakes. you just disabled and voided your warranty...

  • Just something I do FWIW... I hold down the brake pedal by wedging a crowbar between it and the seat. That keeps the brake fluid from flowing out while you work. If it'll be more than 15 minutes or so, I pull the fuses for the rear brake lights so they don't drain the battery. Although, admittedly, not a lot would come out as fast as you work!!

  • what happened the hearse. u must have took the irish man warning??liamautomechanic??

  • Awesome video Scotty! I've watched every single one and I love reading comments from people that say you are doing something wrong. Yeah like they know more then someone with 44 years of experience right? I bet most of the people that leave stupid comments aren't even 44 years old!

  • You made a point about using the crows foot with a ratchet. Was there a reason for using that instead of a flare nut wrench?

  • @MrTee448 yea, they are stronger than flare nut wrenches. I used to use those, now I use crowfoots.

  • Personality!

  • Nice video, one thing to mention though. Careful spilling brake fluid on anything. I've seen it strip paint before.

  • He condenses all this great info and logical troubleshooting into 3 minute videos, This guy is good!

  • is this the bmw with the exaughts problems?

  • I like those old bmw's very much! Simple to maintain i guess!

  • Good tip Scotty.

    Can you break dance too?

  • hey scott! i was just wondering if you had a video on valve noise? when i leave my car sit for 2 days its starts with a very excessively loud TAP TAP TAP TAP on cylinder 1, it goes away once it warms up though.

  • @suzukiholdenman old age does that, especially if you have hydraulic lifters. Try adding a quart of lucas oil additive, that can stop it.

  • thats the stingray from rush hour!

  • Wow, this is weird. I had a car come in today that had the exact same problem. Trouble is, part is on back order! Had to rob a line from a stock car. I also became a Qualified Mechanic today, Yay! It felt like a long 4 years!

  • You don't have a funnel ?

  • @jonathanyip343 As I've already said, it started raining and I was in a hurry on that old thing.

  • is this the same BMW with the muffler that went?

  • @mds2465 yep

  • scotty goes too fast. thats no all there is to working on brakes . lots of stuff to know . if you dont research this issue very well. thing can go very bad . make sure you talk face to face with someone who knows how to trouble shoot brakes get to know your brakes systm and make sure you have the right tools and know how ot use them.

  • @wan2bvader stop being a worrywart. I know what I'm doing, after 44 years of doing it, I don't waste time.

  • @scottykilmer I'm steeling that word scotty, "worrywart."

  • @wan2bvader 44 years, i repeat 44 years!!!

  • @wan2bvader Anyone without mechanical experience but with common sense can figure this out. Working on a car isn't rocket science. I honestly don't get what part of the video wasn't clear? Was he supposed to show you how to take the tire off as well? Or how to open the hood? While we are at it, lets make a 20 minute video on how to unlock and lock your door.

  • @StyrofoamNoise heh as my dad says "its a car! not a watch!" lol

  • hi scotty, there's this squeaking sound from the rear wheels i checked the breaks and the rotors

but there was nothing wrong any advice?

    2008 ford edge

  • @ABC5060 how do u know its not the break? and if its not a drum break, then probably ur breaks a little wore and the little metal piece is hitting the rotor to let u know that its worn out. I had the problem and i just bent the little metal piece up so it doesn't squeak.

  • @djmussy18 cause it wasn't working and now it was. and when I road tested it, the pullng stopped after putting the hose on.

  • @djmussy18 the brakes are fine they're new

    anyway thanks for your reply

  • @ABC5060 Sorry myte..

  • Hi Scotty.I didn't hear you to tell them to leave the brake pedal down till the Bleeder valve was closed has letting off the brake pedal would let air back in the system. Thank you for another find Video.Liked and added to my Favorites & playlists....Tec

  • Like any of the numb nuts complaining about a little brake fluid haven't done the same while adding oil or fluid themselves.

  • I had a car that would always pull to the right - I kicked my fat-assed girlfriend to the curb and the problem went away ;)

  • @TheJazzocaster lmfao hahahahahhahahahaahahahahahahahaahahahh youy should put a stikcer on your car that also says no fat chicks allowed

  • Awesome vids as always, cheers Scotty!!

  • Love that you're working on that old 5 series...do more vids on beemers!

  • @squidboy0769 It's actually BMW series 3

  • good vid but something to add is once those flex lines get clogged up chances are the caliper is gummed up too now. may be good to rebuild the caliper or just get a new one.

  • Great Video Scotty!! Thanks for the Info.

  • Man scotty your a great man to a car lover like myself i do everything DIY :D

  • Hey scott, Im stomped.

Ive done my brake on my car (00 firebird) since I got 10 yrs ago. This last brake job, my left caliper was stuck pinching the rotor. So bought a new caliper, but issue stayed. I bled the system which Ive never done since I did the first job, and still nothing. Rotors dont look clean, like pad/rotor clean, but when I brake it dont pull to either side, and it feels like the brake are doing there job. What did I do wrong.

Thank you scott, great videos as always.

  • I'd be pissed if that was my car you just poured brake fluid all over. Old or not, you of all people should you you have to treat cars like your own. I'm assuming you cleaned it up?

  • Hey scotty I have a 2001 ford 7700 series f150..My motor has a nice clack to it..My neighbor told me once not knowing the truck said I have a nice sounding diesel lol its gas..Now being a 7700 series it is a 5.4..Someone told me its the tensioner for the timing belt..You ever hear of that?? or any other ideas besides stuck lifters?

  • and its making knocking noises next to a coolant hose by the radiator ?

  • I had a question my car is over heating and every time i put coolant fluid in it. It comes out of the coolant take out of the escape hose thats next to it and i check if there was leaks in the radiator and hoses and no leaks ?

  • Scotty,

You have saved me alot of money in your videos. You are fun to watch and very knowledgable. Don't ever die you beautiful man!!

  • does bushings involve in braking problems too? cuz i have a toyota 1983 and the brake system is new complete but still got problems and i hear a person say that if the bushings were bad the brake system will not operate correctly is this true and thanks for your amazing videos

  • @zerohunter64 yes, if bushings are worn, hitting the brakes can cause pulling to the worn side.

  • Hey Scotty can you make a video on how to fix car alignment problem when you get the chance? Thank you!

  • @armenchik619 you really can't align a car yourself, even I send em out to a front end shop, as years of experience and some really expensive equipment is needed.

  • @scottykilmer Oh okay i understand, how much should a 2 wheel alignment cost and how long does it take to do so when I take it to a place that I know I am not being overcharged and that they aren't doing a quick, half-assed job at it? Thank you for sharing all your knowlege!

  • I like your video but still waiting for your answer on the 'how to fix sinking brake pedal' video

  • thanks for upload scotty

  • Hey Scotty I got another car question for you. I was looking for a beater car and I found a 1984 Olds Omega. I took it for a test drive and one of the problems I had found with it was that the automatic transmission lever on the columm was hard to pull down into gear and put back into park. Could that be the transmission going bad or could it just be a shift cable???

  • @MrDantheoldsman probably just the cable.

  • @scottykilmer i had a k car that siezed the shaft that went to the valve body, had to pull it out the bottom

  • LMAO XD 2:47

  • Same for drums too?

  • @dmcadik drums in the front would have hoses, yes. But in the back they normally have solid steel lines.

  • Comment removed

  • my car headlights dim when i park as if the throttle body is dirty , but i cannot find it, i am new to mechanics and i am not going to be pro i am not going to do any one else s car but myself, its a 2000 chev cavalier 2.2L OHV SFIand it is not on top of the engine like in that v6 honda

  • @FromThe3PointLine headlights dim because the alternator isn't charging, the battery is weak, or the wiring has grounding problems. check those first.

  • I love these videos :D

  • hey scotty check out the pedal pumper realfixesrealfastdotcom

im gonna order one (cool tool)

  • What do u recommend for a dirty hoe, that cut my brake hose?

  • this guy owns

  • LOVE YOU VIDEOS SCOTT , I ALREADY SUBSCRIBE

  • @scotty why the brake line clogging up???

  • @playstation2bigs Old age, they collapse and fluid can not pass through.

  • beautiful classic bmw. love those

  • Hey Scotty can you make a video of how to properly bleed the brakes thanks

  • @understyles88 watch my video "How to bleed brakes in your car"

  • @scottykilmer Thanks much appreciated

  • Comment removed

  • Good thing brake fluid is highly corrosive. Glad he took great care in pouring it in... Frigg sakes

  • @iexploderacoons Brake fluid is not corrosive. It's full of corrosion inhibitors. If it was corrosive, it'd probably make short work of your brake lines and master/slave cylinders.

  • @iexploderacoons what a whiner, it's only bad for paint, there is no paint where I poured, Scotty

  • @scottykilmer No its bad to have any oil or flammable liquids spilled all over any part of the engine bay. Cmon man you know this.

  • You are one of my favorite youtubers!

  • And make sure the brake hose is not twisted when you install it.

  • Scotty thank you so much you are basically working on my car. This is basically the same car I have! Hopefully you can do more videos on this car. It will really help me in the future.

Also my idle speed is 1000rpm is this normal for the this type of car also the same in the video? Would replacing the O2 sensor help? I have done all the things on your video about idle speed.

And I would like you advice. Which hose or line is the most important to replace? And the easiest for a novice mechanic

  • @Warhawk407 the hoses near the callipers are the ones that wear out first. Idle speeds vary, but 1000 is a tad bit high on most cars. O2 sensors generally don't cause high idle, watch my video "how to fix a car that idles poorly" for fixes.

  • @scottykilmer hey scotty. Are you sure you weren't the lead singer back in the days in the band Journey? haha you look pretty much like it :-)

  • @scottykilmer Also I have a roaring sound coming from the back of the car, it's only noticeable when I am at highway speeds ( 55-70mph) any clue what it can be

  • Scotty I got a car back in oct 11' that had the rotors and pads replaced when i took delivery, now i have absolutely NO brakes and the steering wheel shimmy is horrible now... could it be the hydraulic sys??
