  • Thanks for sharing this. I hadn't heard of this group. Aren't songs about trains and train stations just magic?

  • @ramblingringodolenz

They are, aren't they? I'ntit funny 'ow yer ferget about stuff yet suddenly remember it again?

    Thank you.

    Jennie. x.

  • @Kittielips There was a good documentary last night on BBC4 about the steam era. A bit sad.

  • @ramblingringodolenz

    Was there? What happened?

    Jennie. x.

  • @Kittielips Well, it was just sad to consider how unceremoniously the steam era was brought to an end, considering that it would naturally have faded away eventually anyway, and also, taking into account, the loss not only of jobs but of knowledge and skills. The love and enthusiasm of railway buffs, artists, etc. was uplifting, on the other hand - their determination to rescue old engines from the scrapyards and preserve them for a grateful public.

  • @ramblingringodolenz

    I couldn't agree more.

    Thank you.

    Jennie. x.

  • @ramblingringodolenz l was a student in Liverpool in the seventies and l had friends living in Yorkshire and the Northeast, this song reminds me of taking the 3.10 from Lime Street calling at St Helens Junction, Manchester Victoria, Stalybridge, Huddersfield, Leeds,York, Northallerton, Darlington, Durham and Newcastle. the litany of stations has stayed with me for over 35 years.

  • ..mensa meetings were held in the station bar......I consumed many many bottles of Newky Browns in the summer before going into Ashton ...The Feathers, Blob Shop, Pitt and Nelson, Vaults.....paradise!

  • @brazil10able

Did you ever visit 'The Prince Of Orange?' I've seen the outside, but I've never been inside it. Where's the "Blob Shop?"

    Thank you.

    Jennie. x.

  • @Kittielips ...yes, have been to Prince of Orange many times...but it was never on the Friday night "circuit"....the "Blob Shop" was the common expression for the old Yateses when it had wooden floors in the 80's, and they served "blobs" which was some sort of fortified wine with hot water a a piece of lemon in it.....it was great on dark winter nights in the good old days

  • @brazil10able

I once had a glass of that and had to visit the loo to bring it back up. Never again. Yates' used to have sawdust on't floor din't they?

  • @Kittielips ...it wasn't that bad

  • @brazil10able

    Weren't it?

  • Rattling trains, cigarette fumes, damp air and good musical sounds not to mention the passage of time............... And the wallpaper separating itself from the wall was the visual impact which seemed like a metaphor for the whole of Stalybridge in the early seventies. The song evokes it all.

  • @sockitt

It's all rather sad, isn't it?

  • I remember some good nights in the pub........peeling wallpapre as well.

  • @sockitt

Peeling wallpaper? Did you do that at 'ome?

  • listening to the fivepenny piece once again sends shivers down the spine.

  • @boondoggle6

    The same here.

    Thank you.

    Jennie.

  • I got the train to Dewsbury from Stalybridge in the 70's on the weekends to see my sister. All those years ago! they go so fast don't they?

  • nice

  • @2008Sameoldfitup

    Thank you.

    Jennie.

  • Haha, this 'un seems a tad unfair on poor Stalybridge station, I've enjoyed many a pleasant evening there =) There's another song by them I love, but I can't remember how it goes, something about a watering can. That's probably not much of a clue, but oh well xD

  • @Mafamooshu

I could sing it for you...."Riding in the water with a watering can, driven along by a beautiful black swan."

    Jennie. x.

  • nice cool videos classics

  • AH the memories, almost the end of an era. Thanks for posting 5*****

  • @Snoopythack1

  • Don't they do any live performances?

  • @HenryFalkner

Apparently John Meeks does, but George and Eddie have passed away.

    Jennie.

  • @HenryFalkner - John and Lynda have just recorded a new album which has new songs and several Fivepenny Piece favourites, Google 5pp to find full details on their website.

  • Waited for the taxi to take me to Ashton when i used to live there, used to work offshore and often land at either Aberdeen or Gt.Yarmouth.not the best places to be for rail travel to Ashton. Why the interest Kittielips.

  • @bonniepepper

    I just wondered, that's all.

    Thank you.

    Jennie.

  • @bonniepepper

    Because I am; okay?

  • Kittielips, not Stalybridge but Ashton always remember the station as it had gas lights upto the 70s and the bar in winter with the roaring coal fire at the end,had a few pints while i waited for the taxi.Great days gone from time but not memory and reawaken by the five Penny Piece.many thanks.

  • traveled all over the world with my job,but when i got to Stalybridge station i knew i was home enjoyed many a pint in the bar and too quote 5 penny piece gas lights cast shadows of time, for me pleasant memories.

  • @bonniepepper

The "gas lamps" line is a good one, isn't it?

    Did you originate from Stalybridge?

    Thank you.

    Jennie.

  • 'ey up, I used to live in Denton, but went to Stalybridge loads of times. I wonder what it's like now? I now live in Lockport, Illinois, (USA). I left England in 1982, but I have to say I still think about home. Perhaps one day I'll go back there? I can hope. Keep the flag flying for me! I still have me English accent. You would never guess I had been away.

  • @chrissiehayward

I haven't been for a while, but I'll tell you this much; them from Uppermill don't half think they are summat.

When you've got ten minutes, I'll tell you about a white rat I once took to Stalybridge.

    Thank you.

    Jennie.

  • Used to live in Stalybridge and went to West Hill School, nice bits of the town and also of Mossley but generally the area there (Ashton, Guide Bridge, Audenshaw, Dukinfield) is a poophole.

Live in Buckinghamshire now, much nicer, fewer chavs

  • @trimmytrab

It sounds lovely. Have you been there long?

    Thank you.

    Jennie.

  • I was a Guard at Huddersfield in 1981 and have been through Stalybridge Station hundreds of times.

Both on passenger trains and goods trains.

We had a job for many years at Healey Mills to put in the tanks into Atchem Sidings by the signal box.

Also newspaper trains, LPG trains, coal trains and more trains than you can shake a stick at.

Also been in the pub at the end of the down platform, and one Sunday worked the Hogwarts Express from Staly to Bradford and York.

    Happy Days.

  • @ewsiscrap

Did you also have a job on the Gravy Train? Do buy Harry Potter a pint for me, if you care to pass this way again.

    Thank you.

    Jennie.

  • J.K Rawlings was on the train and she got off at Church Fenton to avoid the crowds at York Station.

  • @ewsiscrap

Where's Church Fenton? Is it anywhere near Hogwarts?

    Thank you.

    Jennie.

Will he catch it in time?

    Thank you.

    Jennie.

  • Fun, nostalgia - a great mix and terrific video. Again, thanks for introducing this Yorkshireman to Fivepenny Piece - I'd love to sup an ale with them and listen to 'em live. Are they still performing?

  • Apparently John and Linda are still in circulation, but Eddie and George have passed away. As for Colin, I don't know.
