Well, I'm Chilean, but Gonzo playing Davis Cup, or Olympics, would kick anyone's ass. Just ask to James Blake. On 2006, he played the first point against Feña, and he was 76 60 and 53 (30-0) up, but Gonzo won that match, he was 20 and Blake 6. and he beaten Roddick (no. 2 on athens 04), 64 64, and an injury put gonzo out of a chilean final.
PD: Why English speakers talk on a chilean video, he kicked hewitt's ass that night.
yes, that's why he was an amazing player. He did not need any weapon to beat top guys to win slams and got to number one spot. You have to respect him, he's till in top 20 after al the injuries
During Hewitt's reign before Federer started his era, nobody could break through his defenses. Hewitt was like a tank on court: he could retrieve almost any ball and was able to make most guys hit 4-5 balls more than they want to. I think that maybe in Hewitt's short year or so at number 1, no aggressive player had a weapon that was consistent enough. Then came Roddick with a huge serve, and then Federer with a big forehand and a creative serve.
Roddick had a bad H to H record against Hewitt around that days. i certainly think hewitt deserved what he acheived. And probably would add 2-3 more slams in his record IF not in Fed's era. A lots of 'if' can be said. U are right that IF there were some aggressive guys in Hewitt's reign then Hewitt would not be no.1. But then Roger would have 20 slams now if Rafa's not here. Rafa would have 3 wimbledon IF roger's not here. Roddick would have 3-4 slams IF Roger's not here.
I never thought of Hewitt as a consistent slam winner. He's certainly a candidate for Hall of Fame and stuff, but like most men nowadays, he's playing in Federer's era. Not very lucky, wouldn't you say?
Achievement is achievment. Even in 2000-2002 Hewitt needed to deal with Agassi, Roddick, Fererro and Safin, it wasn't that easy to stay in no.1 for that long. I firmly think Fed, Rafa, Safin, Hewitt, Agassi were top 5 last decade.
@JL6293 Roddick lacked a backhand/net play;wasn't fit ;couldn't return well or move;didn't last 40 shot rally;stayed 2 feet behind baseline 2 return;he got exposed
Federer is so much more than just a big forehand and creative serve.he's got speed/movement; the forehand;backhand;slice;drop shot
approach shots/net play;is great at defense;even more than Hewitt can ever be and Federer is superb at defense 2 offense. He returns better than Hewitt/Roddick combined and Federer is an ALL surface player
gonzo just took all the pace off hewitt's backhand knowing hewitt couldnt make it himself, and the second hewitt went for a down the line or a forehand, gonzo would crush a winner with his gogo gonzo forehand.
besides, hewitt's sooo 90s, all he can do is play rally game with you, and only off of your pace, his is always medium, and his shots are always predictable
Yes Gonzo had big forehand ,but then look at the achievement, Hewitt could win slams and went to number one, where is Gonzo in that league? Hewitt is top 5 player in the last decade, (Federer, Nadal, Hewitt, Safin, Agassi). No way Gonzo could stay near them.
@joseph0086 Hewitt played the dirtballer era in the likes of Moya;Ferrero and Kuerten who couldn't do shit on grass or hard courts.
He had the likes of Roddick who couldn't hit a proper backhand;who stayed 2-3 feet behind the baseline;couldn't hit a volley or change the speed or pace of the ball and moved horribly.
Hewitt's game if you see is to go cross court to crosscourt. Now players serve big;are fast and return big and will out overpower him and hit him off the court.
did you see him crush del potro at wimbledon this year? hewitts got great groundies and incredible fitness. when he was younger sampras actual said "The kid is so quick it's unbelievable," the 30yearold Sampras said. "I wish I had some of those legs for this old guy. I lost to a great champion. You're going to see this Lleyton Hewitt guy for the next 10 years like you saw me."
I heard that hewitt was the fastest runner on tour at one stage, also heard that federer and his fitness coach studied hewitt´s court movement, to get some thing´s from it..which is pretty surprising, if you think about it.
Well that's why only Federer was the only player to play him correctly by using the slice backhand back to Gonzalez because Fernando can't hit a huge forehand unless the ball is at a good height.
BrotherTree1: You can't seriously call Gonzo's serve a weakness. In this particular match he served 19 aces, and won 70 % of his service points. It's his backhand that has always been his liability.
I think Lleyton's best days are obviously behind him. He's still an awesome player, but what is he doing losing to qualifiers and wild cards at tournaments not being on his home soil. Think about it, his best tennis is on the Oceanic swing, he's performed well on clay, but can never beat the big guys. Meanwhile, Gonzalez has taken out Rafa on a hard court, Roddick and Blake on clay, and Federer in Shanghai!!! Hewitt is too easily overpowered.
he does get overpowered as you said,at times, when guys that have powerfull forehands like federer and gonzalez attack him, lleyton
is scrambling at the baseline trying to defend himself..calleri was blasting at lleyton at us open putting a lot of pressure on him..lleyton could not even counter properly,he was under so much pressure..I think lleyton need´s to be more the agressor
Hewitt is a plain counterpuncher, great, consistent groundstrokes, hits early, is speedy, but can play with pace and not generate it, meanwhile Gonzalez is one who is situational, if he's getting bombarded, he slices to defend, but if he gets short balls, he crushes from both sides.
and he may not have quite the power of some of the guys on tour, but it's really negligible, he can still crush groundstrokes if he wants. also, he makes super solid contact on almost every ball, almost never mishits
i always love it when he gives a good 'C'MON!!!!!!!!!!!'. It's his saying and it only sounds cool when he says it...everybody says that now, and they sound like it's something their coach or sports psychologist told them to do...Hewitt just does it because he is that pumped up and obviously just loves competing.
he doesn´t shout out c-mon to impress anyone,he does it pump himself up and get motivated during the match! hewitt is a great natural competitor, even though he does not have powerful shots, like some others..
I don´t know if its just me, but i notice that when hewitt plays hardcourts,i find it strange the fact that he does not seem to possese the power to go for winners on his forehands, gonzalez on the other hand blasts them away, every know and then, i think hewitt relies to much on making the other guy miss, working the ball and tiring the opponent out,but guys seem to get winners buy him,roger,fernando..etc..it seems..that is just my impression..
how? by going with the flow and not forcing anything? he is isn't changing the direction until he gets a good shot. that type of playing cut down his unforced errors.
Feña's forehand was fabulous throughout the tourney. Had he converted the set points in the first set against Federer, he probably could have won the championship
the slams are best of 5 not best of 2.What did Gonzalez do after that final all year? You didn't hear from him until he beat Federer in the round robin in shanghai and then he lost tamely the very next day.
Gonzo played great very very well, but the real seperating factor was the serve, hewitt was broken so many times after he broke gonzo, gonzo returns very well no doubt, but hewitts serve (ESPECIALLY THE SECOND SERVE) is a major weakness, and it cost him big time when he played federer this year and served for the match and several times for the second set. That is his 1 main weakness regardless of his power.

Hewitt has the talent but not the drive. Gonzo has both.

no. hewitt has the drive but not the talent. most his matches are won in 5sets.

JAVIER FRANA 100pre XD
