Don't get me wrong I love Weckl as much as the next drummer and he IS a master player but I prefer the "Live at the Blue Note Tokyo" version of this tune with Vinnie on the kit. So sweet.
they look so f-ing tired you can see it on patitucci the most haha they still sound great, but its a little sloppy just because they must have all just gotten off a plane or something hahah
@thetravellinminstrel i thought alot about it. i meant mostly just at the beginning. hahaha.. cant you tell? listen to john at the beginning of it man.. ive listened to like 6 different versions.. he plays way better in other ones i think anyway
All those guys are jazz masters on their instruments and there is no better. It's all about the way of learning your ears to predict and ensure your taste of music and way of playing.
Whew! Pattituci is powerful! As a bassist, I often wonder from where the inspiration for such performance comes, I guess it has to be a step beyond just making money, because I hear so many talented yet, uninspired palyers, wh seem only interested in making thesmselves seem more important than the music, or the listener!

@free2bpoppie these people don't care about making money...there is no money in jazz if they wanted to make money they would have done something that sells.
Always amazed at how Patitucci can sustain that loping, slightly-behind-the-beat quality even at up-tempo. There is no other bassist who can do this at quite the same level. Avery Sharpe comes close on some cuts with Tyner, but that's about it. "Icons" like Ron Carter just lose it completely at speed.
@gwalkron Absolutely! So few people realize how incredible these guys are. Chick is the man. The source. The vision. And he knows how to surround himself with the right talent and then feeds off it.
Notice how none of them break a sweat! To be free...

I don't know why everyone seems to be getting their panties in a bunch over someone's preference for a particular drummer. Personally I love Colaiuta's version of this tune with Chick and John. Overplaying? To some. I consider it improvisition of the highest form, the purest example of a drummer getting "inside" the musical piece, and an extreme musical honesty in his approach; an unadulerated genius at work. He works on creating "textures" sort of, and does it all for the musicality. I think this is why he is better than dave.

And I thought that Jeff Ballard was better than Weckl. And you got on my case, saying I was ignorant because I didn't think they were both equal.
Show me this jazz musician ranking system you have developed that allows you to say objectively that Ballard is better than Weckl. (And you of course you must mean he is always better, right?)
I said that "I think" Ballard is better than Weckle. But that does not mean YOU have to think the same thing as me. The traits that I look for in a drummer don't consist too much of chops, but more of musicality. And I think Ballard is more musical than weckle, and that's why I think he is better. You can like whoever you like, and I'll like whoever I like. I made my original comment on this page because Ballard isn't as popular as Weckle, but I think people should know about him too.
I stated MY own opinion, and therefore this "ranking system" I have developed does not concern you. My "ranking system" emphasizes how the drummer sounds, not what the drummer plays.

there is a lot of harmonic and melodic displacement happening over the form too. Chick's lines start and stop wherever they need to - flowing over and starting before the cycle.
can that hot brunette play jazz this good? i think you're trying to attract the wrong crowd here buddy, we're just trying to watch some genius music. (subtext to that comment: piss off)
I've been playing piano for about 8 years, and started jazz one year ago. Improvisations with the right are killing me... What should i study for that? Anything you recommend?
study anything by bill evans - his harmonies are impeccable - and check out jazz improvisation for the classical pianist by martan mann - great for jazz improv lessons...also mark levine's piano jazz theory is excellent - even for someone who doesn't play piano
If anyone wants to hear a completely fresh and dynamic version of the standard Autumn Leaves, check out the cd entitled Chick Corea Akoustic Band, 1989, track 5. Simply an amazing take on the tune. Same trio as you see in this video.
Chick's dissonance complements Weckl's explosiveness. It's one of the components that makes these guys gel rhythmically - very staccato and abrasive almost. There's a lot of high energy and tension in the harmonies that mesh well w/ Weckl's force. Enjoy listening to this video on a semi-regular basis.
and about the speed think that majpluselva said i agree.. Speed is something that everyone can have.. it doesnt matter.. Rubalcaba, Michel Camilo or Ballard and many more are for me faster that Chick but he has his own style.. he is unique..
Music is not only theory and rules! every JAZZ musician knows that.. these guys have their rulez when they play! i agree with you spielemusik.. i am a pianist but i i love drums.. and for those who believe that drums are not a "jazz like" instrument i suggest maraca y otra vision or something.. and more bill evans's trios..:P he might understand some day that all instruments are the same.. the way that they play music depends on the musician...:)
funny how my one great friend and respected fellow musician who is a keyboard player, and knows theory, could have a hard time following the meter..i asked him if he could tap the quarter notes to the tune....weckyl plays erratic accents, which gels w/ the band...tapping the quarters helps to follow the rhythm....these guys are beyond theory and timing into feel and complete Dionysian bliss...pure expression and abandonment - a capture of artistic dynamite...total orgasmic sensation of reality
it really bothers me how much total crap on youtube people like. for example, search something like... "best guitar improvisation ever". pure lol/ pure sigh
Grande Trio acustico, um dos melhores que já vi do Chick. patitucci e Weckel fantasticos.

I've been playing piano for about 8 years, and started jazz one year ago. Improvisations with the right are killing me... What should i study for that? Anything you recommend?
Awesome performance, by the way

study anything by bill evans - his harmonies are impeccable - and check out jazz improvisation for the classical pianist by martan mann - great for jazz improv lessons...also mark levine's piano jazz theory is excellent - even for someone who doesn't play piano

study anything but piano,preferably saxophone
it'll open up your horizons like you wouldn't believe
I've used that approach on guitar since about 80
Little or no guitar music, mostly piano, sax and cello

If anyone wants to hear a completely fresh and dynamic version of the standard Autumn Leaves, check out the cd entitled Chick Corea Akoustic Band, 1989, track 5. Simply an amazing take on the tune. Same trio as you see in this video.

Chick's dissonance complements Weckl's explosiveness. It's one of the components that makes these guys gel rhythmically - very staccato and abrasive almost. There's a lot of high energy and tension in the harmonies that mesh well w/ Weckl's force. Enjoy listening to this video on a semi-regular basis.

The Rhythmic approaches of these three guys are just too co-ordinatingly.. Just like from mind of 1 person

and about the speed think that majpluselva said i agree.. Speed is something that everyone can have.. it doesnt matter.. Rubalcaba, Michel Camilo or Ballard and many more are for me faster that Chick but he has his own style.. he is unique..

yeah, in the end someone spoke the truth which is origin from wider awared context. Camilo is most fastest, same with Rubalca, he´s killin´ too.

Music is not only theory and rules! every JAZZ musician knows that.. these guys have their rulez when they play! i agree with you spielemusik.. i am a pianist but i i love drums.. and for those who believe that drums are not a "jazz like" instrument i suggest maraca y otra vision or something.. and more bill evans's trios..:P he might understand some day that all instruments are the same.. the way that they play music depends on the musician...:)

i totally agree

funny how my one great friend and respected fellow musician who is a keyboard player, and knows theory, could have a hard time following the meter..i asked him if he could tap the quarter notes to the tune....weckyl plays erratic accents, which gels w/ the band...tapping the quarters helps to follow the rhythm....these guys are beyond theory and timing into feel and complete Dionysian bliss...pure expression and abandonment - a capture of artistic dynamite...total orgasmic sensation of reality

Jazz drummins rules.
