ive only ever seen this film once, along time ago. all i can remember is the scenes that make it onto you tube, and that i was impressed by it. must by it on blu ray when it comes out on blu ray here in the uk.
After rewatching the opening scene, I am positive that noone else was in the room at the exact moment of Kane’s death. By watching the scene, we can conclude that Kane’s exact moment of death was when he uttered those famous words, “Rosebud.” This is confirmed by the dropping of his snowglobe, which alerts the nurse to come into the room. Before he dropped the globe, nobody else was in the room, and as we can see, the nurse was outside of the room.
As the nurse is the only one to come and help him, we can conclude that there was nobody else inside the room, as they surely would have gone to see what was the matter with Kane if the snowglobe had shattered. Beyond the fact that the nurse was behind a closed door, his last words were nothing but a whisper; there is no way that the nurse heard him. So who was there to hear Kane’s final word?
I knew it was his sled, just like I knew Bruce Willis was dead when watching The Sixth Sense. But I loved watching the rise and fall of a man who gradually went from having everything to nothing.
I'm glad I watched this film, the acting, the score, the story, the cinematography, everything was articulate and precise. Fantastic film that I will surely watch for years to come.
And hey, I'm only 15 years old, it's just a shame that my age group are stereotyped as braindead idiots.
Well, you know what, I knew it was his childhood sled. Everyone told me. And damn it, damn it, the journey into a character study of an intiguing man was more than worth it. I knew the ending. But I went through the journey of a man and cried at what I knew what was coming. That's what matters.
I just watched this in Film Study. I don't know about everyone, but I thought it was a very powerful movie with a lot of meaning, and I loved it!!!!!!!
I heard the quote "Rosebud" from a scene in the PS2 game "Time Splitters: Future perfect" and have been baffled on what it had meant.
After some years went buy, I heard the same reference, in a tv episode. It was the TV episode of where Peter from Family Guy explains what it means (I forgot).
Now I finally found the source of the quote. What was the meaning? Should I actually find a VHS version of this film and watch it? Should I?
This film and the mystery around Rosebud inspired one of our tee-shirts. We are launching a brand based on cultural references and on the doubts about existency of things in different forms of art. You can check it out on our facebook page: DOESN'T EXIST

You know, I heard that the film was based off the life of William Randolph Hearst and Rosebud was actually the name of his mistress' vagina. Just sayin'
How many people have noticed the HUGE ABYSS in the story?? We are made to watch the entire Kane's life because some journalists want to figure out what Rose Bud means. But how do they know what his last words were?? Kane is alone in the room when he says those words and dies. The nursed comes in only after she hears the snow ball crash on the floor.
And this movie got the Oscar for best screenplay. Not so great a movie after all. Although, I do admit it has some great photography.
@imagomagus Mr. Kane says "Rosebud" in front of all his employed, with tears in his eyes, just in the moment when he take the snow globe from the (now destroyed by him) room of Susan... That can be an answer. I just say...
@Traumdertod Hm, well, acutually it doesn't solve the plot hole. Because what the journalists what to know is the meaning of his "last words" before he died and it's because of the journalists' actions that we watch Kane's life story. But no one knows what he said before he died. That's the plot hole that just keeps staring at you through the whole movie.
@imagomagus Yes, you rigth. I'm just try to imagine an alternative to that problem and enjoy without prejudice one my favourite movies ;) ("I want to believe" haha).
@imagomagus The poor guy was only like 25 years old and hadn't had a LOT of experience in screenwriting and filmmaking, and the rest of the film was genius, so give the guy a break! LOL
@tall32guy there was a scene with him playing on his sledd in the snow when thatcher was making his foster parents sign him over remember. he looked like he was having a real good time. that scene was so important that you can still see hum playing outside while the rest of the scene continued
@roeroe305 I guess I forgot about that part. LOL I have a learning disability that makes me forget a LOT of stuff, so it's no surprise that is not one of the scenes I remember from the movie... LOL
May I suggest Citizen Kane's beginning is the best one in the history of cinema? Of course it would be like speaking obvious, although one could say everything about "Citizen Kane" has already been said!
I would also bet that infamous opening is the single scene that received the greater number of studies by both film essayists and cinephiles all over the world.
This movie is made invalid by the fact that nobody is in the room when he whispers 'rosebud' but everyone spends the whole movie trying to figure out what it means...
@lordxeras Listen to the commentary, watch how connected the scenes are. In fact, during the childhood scene, watch how the camera moves through OBJECTS (the making points out that there are cleverly concealed rails for the camera. Also, look at the use of objects as symbolism (not pretentious, they all bear meaning to Kane's past). Very Gothic.
"When I saw this movie I said, all right greatest movie of all time, give me your best shot. Literally within the first minutes, I was hooked." ~Doug Walker, aka Nostalgia Critic.
@kolisionn because u watch the entire movie wondering wy the fuck he said rosebud as he died....then the movie itself is actually pretty entertaining.
@darkoni12398 Even so, even if the ending was spoiled to you (trust me, sadly a lot of people toss it around apathetically) it also observes his relationships with others and the complex man he it.
@AliaSparrow Oh i know...i was just telling this kid here why this quote is so famous...it was the first movie to ever have such a strong mystery with 1 freaking scene. Then the movie is fantastic and then at the end ur like OH thats what rosebud is XD!!!
Charles Schulz considered "Citizen Kane" his favorite movie- so much, he devoted an entire Sunday "Peanuts" strip to it, as Linus watches it on TV for the first time; naturally, Lucy spoils it for him by revealing what "Rosebud" is {"AUUGGHH!"}.
so the nurse heard him say rosebud from the hallway....yeah right big plot hole in the "greatest" movie ever. People the movie is balls.....just because people say something is great you dont have to believe them.
@TheRyenRogers wow you are right you are now my offical hero. this is the greatest movie ever thanks for making me follow the rest of you sheep. I heart you forever.
@readybeeill A servant was at the end of the hall (he is later interviewed in the movie). When they say "Kane died alone" later in the film, they mean Kane died with no one close to him. Also, look into the Gothic shots, the storytelling, the relationship interactions, and building. There are good reasons to why this film deserved to be preserved.
one thing about this movie. everybody is trying to figure out what his dying words (Rosebud) means, right? nobody was there to hear him say it though.
"We need to figure out the meaning of Kane's last words!" "What were his last words?" "Rosebud!" "How did you know that?" "Uhhhh I don't know, no one was around to here him..." "..." "Fuck it, it was rosebud!"
Anyone else find it odd Kane dies at the beginning of CITIZEN KANE at the start of Welles' career and Unicron dies at the end of TRANSFORMERS THE MOVIE at the end of Welles' career?
Such a profound movie.Even after all the money he'd accrued, the women he'd had, the places he'd been, the things he'd done, all he wanted was a return to innocence. All he wanted was to return to his childhood, before he had tainted his very soul.He wanted to return to a time when all it took to satisfy him was a ride down a snow-covered hill on his sled.He realized that all these 'things' he had could not give him the happiness his sled gave him.The world was so caught up, they didn't realize it
After all the millions, after all the places he saw and stuff he bought being so ridiculously rich, after having it all, the only thing he really wanted were the times he had on a cheap child's sled.
I love how while the camera moves in closer to Xanadu, the lit window is always in the same place on the screen, even when its upside down reflected in the water, its still in the same spot.
The opening titles and the music were pretty rousing, but for the best movie ever I then expected a vampire or an explosion. All we get is fences... fences... fences... monkeys dicking around... more fences... Can you f'ing believe it?!
The Butler himself said he heard Kane say Rosebud before he died, the whole interior of the room is not shown so I would assume the Butler was sitting in a corner somewhere
@greenfury87 you see, this is why you should not be allowed to watch movies. Because you are the kind of person that goes and sees a movie like "Meet the Spartans" and results in it actually making money.
@greenfury87 What because I don't like unoriginal comedy that boils down to a series of "Remember the time we did this" and it shows you a flashback that has NOTHING to do with the plot.
it was his SLED. The one that he had when he was a kid. There I just saved you two LONG boobless hours.

@CurtisDoverY0 I think people would have enjoyed the two hours--your opinion is about as useful as an ant's.
windstorm1000 11 months ago
@windstorm1000 not only did u reply to a VERY old comment, but you do not get the reference therefore YOUR OPINION about MY OPINION is moot

When he said rose bud, He is refering to the sled, which i think represented his happy childhood, of which didn't have anymore...

I love how the first step that the snowglobe falls down is higher than the step where the snowglobe actually breaks.
BARNEYRAPEDME69 1 year ago
WHAT DOES IT MEAN?!
armchairmaster 1 year ago
@armchairmaster rosebud was the name of his sled he owned as a boy, the only time he was truly ever happy

Great beginning of the movie, from the montage to the music.

It is really cool, but I don't get it.

Best.Scene.Ever.

The opening titles and the music were pretty rousing, but for the best movie ever I then expected a vampire or an explosion. All we get is fences... fences... fences... monkeys dicking around... more fences... Can you f'ing believe it?!

First great movie twist. Who woulda thought rosebud would be his beloved childhood pet turtle?

The Butler himself said he heard Kane say Rosebud before he died, the whole interior of the room is not shown so I would assume the Butler was sitting in a corner somewhere
Mythonponty 1 year ago
HOW THE HELL DID SHE HEAR HIM SAY THAT?!?!? She was in the other room with the door closed! I just poked a huge hole in this movie.
MxC1337MxCsh43d 1 year ago
@MxC1337MxCsh43d No you didn't. So shut the fuck up.
blixsaber 1 year ago
@blixsaber Yeah, I hadn't seen it yet. I guess the butler was standing in the room.
MxC1337MxCsh43d 1 year ago
@MxC1337MxCsh43d She had heard the smashing of the snow globe. That, or she must have wanted something from him.
XLeonPhoenixBelmontX 1 year ago
@XLeonPhoenixBelmontX Yeah, and from what I got from the movie, the butler was in the room with him when he died.
MxC1337MxCsh43d 1 year ago

greenfury87 1 year ago
@greenfury87 you see, this is why you should not be allowed to watch movies. Because you are the kind of person that goes and sees a movie like "Meet the Spartans" and results in it actually making money.
TheT4xid3rmist 1 year ago
@TheT4xid3rmist: That was a quote from family guy, dumbass.
greenfury87 1 year ago
@greenfury87 Sorry, I don't watch stupid unfunny programming.

@TheT4xid3rmist: You wouldnt know a sense of humor if it fucked you in the ass.
greenfury87 1 year ago
@greenfury87 What because I don't like unoriginal comedy that boils down to a series of "Remember the time we did this" and it shows you a flashback that has NOTHING to do with the plot.

All I cansay is one thing EPIC
thedarknight307 1 year ago
how come it didn't break on the first massive fall and then broke on the last little step.
wobbygongman 1 year ago
I guess he said Rosebud the moment the nurse came in. Those two scenes were just seperate in the final movie to make it sound more epic.
NeptunII 1 year ago
That would also explain why the nurse didn't react in any way, after all Kane spoke two seconds ago.
NeptunII 1 year ago
Well, she didn't seem that surprised when she found out he WAS dead. Epic film anyway ;-)
SupremeKingDan 1 year ago 3
@SupremeKingDan Was she even in the room when he said rosebud?
MxC1337MxCsh43d 1 year ago
what gets me is that he mutters"rosebud" before the nurse enters the room. How did anybody know that was the last thing he said.
lens2optic 1 year ago 4
The guy behind the camera heard it. Duh. ;-)
