  • i wanna be a crazy artsy aunt with scarves! you are my role model.

  • Cynicism is easy.

    Being positive is not.

    Keep your chin up.

  • family, friends, direction, youtube? the games over and you've one. its so easy to be cynical because its a shield. keep rockin the positive realism.

  • I normally enjoy cynicism, even when it's targeted at me...

But yeah, they sometimes kill dreams so quickly that its annoying, but still funny

  • i think thats really sweet....and who knows someday someone might make the how i met your mother reference and then from there....you'll become their dream girl ^_^...things happen for a reason and all in good time and as impatient as we can be, God has a plan for us :) and he's working it out....he might not follow the umbrella...but who knows..maybe be will....and i dunno i kinda think that people who are cynical...deep down are really not cynical at all but are just scared of being let down..

  • I'm cynical and a hopeless romantic too. I guess it's an artsy people thing ;D

Maybe we tell people we're never gonna get married cause we want someone to come after us and make us want to change our minds.

  • FYI Right before you talked about HIMYM I saw your new banner and I clicked the "there it is!" link and...well the timing was perfect.

  • I wish we still embraced the original Cynic ideals... they were quite simple, lovely... trying to focus on what has real meaning and is good, not this modern idea of negative mistrust... bums me out. Same with skepticism, which I find to be quite a healthy trait. Hold tight to the umbrella... even if it's a school color now, it's an even better indication the person is in tune with sentimental details, etc. since most will just see a color and the boy would have an excuse to brave up and talk!

  • I just watched this after listening to Pyramid Song by Radiohead. It makes me feel a bit like I'm on drugs. That is all.

Actually that's not all. I don't think there's anything wrong what you're doing with the umbrella. And the people who are cynical about it just forgot that they do the exact same thing. Everyone does those little quirky things. Like how I used to walk home slowly in hopes that girl would catch up to me...

Anyway. You're just as good when you're not trying to be funny :)

  • OMG I LOVE HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER IT IS THE BEST

  • In my city, you pretty much should carry around an umbrella at any time, anyway, because there is ALWAYS a chance of rain.

  • Awww you are so cute and romantic :D

I do agree that cynicism can be passed from one person to another, and I feel like once people get into the habit of thinking cynically, then they don't know how to get out of it.

I'm sure it's one of the reasons why YouTube is a haven for trolls.

  • I don't know, cynicism is funny, and what's wrong with fun?

  • And that's why I have a yellow umbrella too :)

  • If I saw you with a yellow umbrella I would automatically think of Beckoning Of Lovely, and I would ask why you aren't in Chicago on a repeated number date.

    I would be confused.

  • Wow. This is definitely a different kind of Leslie video.

I think you should follow your yellow umbrella dreams.

You will find them...or they you. I just know it.

  • I hope you find an awesome guy who watches How I Met Your Mother and likes explosions in the sky. I think you have a lovely personality (from what I see on your videos) and think anyone would be lucky to have you!

  • I love cynicism. It fits you. But I can see the hopeless romantic too. It also fits you. Can we call you a hopeless romancynist?

  • @Justtubed You can call me anything you want. *wink*

  • I don't think cynicism is bad. A way to look at creativity is thesis/antithesis/synthesis. We imitate or borrow at first in order to learn the skills to do things. You imitate artists/bands because creating is hard and so is learning to perform. Antithesis or cynicism is tearing down and seeing flaws so you don't recreate them. You need that before you get to synthesis or original creation. Without cynicism, you get lots of crap music and art and movies.

  • @stormbird451 I guess that's true, except that there isn't a generalized antithesis unless it's very basic, so we don't all have an understanding on what the flaws are. Because we're all different.

  • I think in order to be a functioning human, we all need to be a bit cynical. I mean, to always see the positive or to always see the good in people is tough, if not impossible. And I love that beneath your shell of cynicism is a hopeless romantic. That's why I love you. I'm pretty sure I'm a bit like that as well. I can be very outwardly negative but secretly hoping that my date next week may be the start of something fantastic. :p This is a long comment, so I'll stop. <33

  • this is a cynical comment.

Hey! So I carry an orange umbrella because it helps stop the rain. I always tell people I stole it from a crossing guard. Really I bought it in the college bookstore during a rainstorm when I had no umbrella. My school colors were orange and black.

  • @OpieTheMighty This is why we're friends.

  • I have an arsenal of weird nad random things about myself that I unload on people I meet in the hopes that it will stick and they will remember me. Also, my cynicism is annoying in that every time I try to do something creative, my voice in my head tells me 'Oh, people will just think you're being a pose.' Ouch internal me, ouch.

  • i don't think your umbrella plan is silly!

i often wear a soul survivor hoodie (christian youth festival in UK) and i hope someone who also goes to soul survivor will talk to me about it

or i tweet/facebook about music that i like hoping that someone will start up a conversation about that too...

although i think sometimes we need to be the people starting the conversations if we want something to happen...

    hmmmm

  • Yeah I've got some of the opposite problem. I am always happy and nice to people and only the people really close to me know that I can be really scathingly sarcastic too. I don't know that it's really a problem; I think everyone has their outer-world self and their personal sphere self, and neither one is really a lie. Everyone's complex.

But if you want to avoid negativity because you'd rather make people happier than sadder, more power to you! It's always a nice goal to cheer someone up.

  • I think lots of people "think too much," but never speak their minds. Good for you for doing so.

  • How i met your mother!! XD can i knick your idea? xx

  • It's nice to see an honest video on Youtube.

I am sure you would make a fantastic artsy aunt.

  • There is definitely a difference between cynicism and negativity. Frankly, I think that cynicism may be inherent to the human condition, at least in those humans who see that our world is broken and unjust. But just because I'm a cynic doesn't mean that I don't fight it relentlessly and doesn't mean that there aren't pools of unbridled optimism inside me as well. Life is not just black and white, this or that. Thank god.

  • @splicegrrl True, but the fight can be somewhat exhausting. I just rather wish my optimism took control more than the other side, ya know? I'm going to work for that.

  • So this is the video where you weren't trying to be funny? If so, I still think you're funny. Good, sometimes people need to laugh with the more serious things of life. Love the umbrella wish btw, all though I've never seen "How I met your mother"..Maybe I should...

  • I am rather fond of not funny Leslie.

  • @shecaptain That's reeeeeally nice to hear. Or read. whatever.

  • I used to think I was cynical, then I decided I was a realistic, and now I don't even know what all of these labels mean.

  • It is people, it's media, writing, there really isn't a source, I don't believe. Something that always upsets me is when people think I'm being negative when really all I'm being is cynical. It's not such a huge deal. Honestly, keeping it "real" is only attempting to understand and being honest with oneself. To some, that's negative... I guess. Whatever, it's a struggle, they can either know it or not.

  • i look forward to your videos more than anyone else's haha. i love your stories & the way to tell them.

  • @rrichdubb Wow, thank you so much.

  • Okay i'm not sure if this is just ironic timing or what but when i started watching this video that how i met your mother episode started playing with Ted walking around with the umbrella!

  • @lolgreenbear Oh wow really? It must have been ironic timing, because that part of the show just sticks out in my head.

  • My friend and I talk about stuff like this a lot. Like, "if I wear this band's shirt, then someone will notice it and then we'll strike up a conversation and then this will happen..." etc.

So basically, I don't think your yellow umbrella plan is silly.

  • @rebexington I've heard random love story occurrences. Like I heard of someone meeting someone with the same tattoo in the same place. They're married now.

  • You'll find your romantic moment, it may not be with a yellow umbrella, but it will happen and it will be yours.

  • Absolutely wonderful video. I love it.

  • Our culture tries so hard to make cynicism look cool, which is uncool. Maybe part of the problem is that it is so much easier to be witty while being cynical than it is to be witty while being hopeful.

Also, your funny even when you talk about serious topics.

  • @justinhabit I think I tried to be funny anyway. I think it ends up a defense mechanism. Or something.

    I think.

    Thanks for the compliment anyway.

Maybe some cynicism makes sense, but something like that. But that's when you ask the difference between cynicism and realism.

  • in portland you'll have plenty of opportunity for umbrella exposure. *hinthint*

  • @point5past If only, if only.

  • dawwwww <3

  • explosions in the sky and how i met your mother<X

  • hey I carry around a yellow umbrella too! Except I do it to be prepared in case it rains... I should probably start watching How I Met Your Mother

  • I love this :)

  • i totally "awwwed" at the running home to tell someone you love them line.

i guess that makes me a hopeless romantic too? but instead of actually doing those things, i just fantisize about it in my head.

  • A few things:

    1. I LOL'd at the weird artsy-aunt-accent.

    3. Noticing the Bo Burnham flyer on your wall distracted me so much that I had to rewind about 20 seconds because I just stared at it thinking "shoot I wish I could have gone to that" and imagining if I had. lol

    4. Explosions in the Sky are fantastic!

    5. How I Met Your Mother!! Yessss.

I knew you it was a smart thing to subscribe to you. :)

  • I wanna find YOUR grail, Leslie. #badpickupline

  • @Quetzacoatl2 oh geeez

  • @lesliefoundhergrail I know, right? It sounded so funny in my mind o.0

  • Did you get partnered?

  • @dillooon I did.

  • I think life makes you cynical. You start off young and optimistic, but as you age you see how life REALLY works and you become cynical.

  • I'm a naturally cynical person myself, but I do often entertain those kinds of romantic ideas. I'm all for umbrella-romanticism, as long as you don't secretly pin all your hopes and dreams on whether or not reality lives up to those expectations. I tend to get much more cynical when I get too wrapped up in fantasies that end in disappointment.

  • @gemllama agreed. I think that's where my cynicism comes from. I think I want just a healthy balance.

  • I've never watched how I met your mother. The references are lost on me

  • Haha, I always get so happy to see your face in the subscription box because it means my next couple of minutes will be good ones! Thank you!

  • Good one.

  • explosions in the sky! <3 And, the running. I sometimes think about doing that, but I never do, because I'm a cynic and a romantic, but still care about what people think

  • HELLO FELLOW CYNIC :D

  • I want to be that aunt too

  • If you're cynical, then I most certainly am.

My sister also wants to be that aunt. Oddly, she's the only sibling in the family with a significant other at the moment.

  • ... I wonder where the fine line between Cynic and Pessimist is... and what about Sarcasm o..o I find myself in desperate need of clarification.

I'm a pessimist when it comes to my grades :| I always assume everything I turn in will get a failing mark. But, in a very weird sort of way, it works as a good thing. Because very few of my assignments end in failure, so I'm always delighted to be getting something other than an F back :)

erm.. yeah... that's all *scurries back to cubby hole*

  • @MsMoonHere I've gotten to a point where I don't even worry about grades anymore. As long as I pass, I'm kinda okay with it.

  • i think it was a bit uninformed of you to say some call things traumatic and everyone calls it life, trauma is trauma, you might not have had a traumatic experince, but that doesnt mean no one else has.

i love the how i met your mother reference

  • @tobiosnmakky I don't have an argument there. I agree, it's just what came out at the time.

  • I, too, am a hopeless romantic. And I just get so excited inside when I hear 'yellow umbrella' stories. I'm a firm believer that it'll happen.

  • @PrimroseMarie I really agree with you.

  • @PrimroseMarie I think it will too, just maybe.

  • Your school colours are hufflepuff :L

    Love all this :')

  • @AverageSlytherin So are mine! :D XD

  • @Rosebite12 Oh wow!

My school doesn't really have colours :/

    Like, we have different houses,

So mine would be navy and green D:

  • i love the honesty of this. thanks.

  • I'm pretty sure it turned out that the woman holding the yellow umbrella wasn't Ted's dream woman anyway

Maybe you should try being someones roommate and only showing your foot

  • you're fantastic.

  • Aw

  • the umbrella story is so lovely

  • @katex007 awww thank you

  • optimism =happiness (well for me anyways) Used to be cynical, and still am a little, but at this moment the positivity is ruling. =]

  • I CAN TOTALLY SEE YOU AS THE ARTSY KINDA AUNT! WILL YOU BE MY AUNT?! ...even if you are only a year...older...than...me. I seriously NEED to watch HIMYM you are like the UPTEENTH person to talk about it today. Stupid Netflix not having it on InstantWatch. #NotBItter

  • @supersharayah I streamed 5 seasons in one weekend. It was intense.

  • As soon as you said 'umbrella', something inside of me got all excited and WOW HIMYM is the best.

  • How I met your mother is amazing <3

  • @FionaFearss agreed.

  • First comment? SCORE! relevant video is relevant, good going Leslie!

  • @memorabiliaofcelia See below.

  • @cho474chang denied...

  • @memorabiliaofcelia Don't feel bad. It's just because I have no life, and am spending my Friday night on the computer.

  • Closet hopeless romantics who are "cynical" on the outside remind me of janeane garofalo. Who is the shit, so don't sweat it.

Also, do you want to trade school colors? Gryffindor for Hufflepuff?

  • @AviatorGoggles I'm a Ravenclaw, though...

  • @AviatorGoggles Curses, foiled again!

  • I call those "instances" enlightening.

  • ALL BOW TO MY SUPREMACY!!!
