The first time I heard this was during the amazing finale to The Hudsucker Proxy. The second time was maybe when Bob Dylan nicked the opening to use in 'A Simple Twist of Fate'. I'm working hard to avoid using pop cultural references to distinguish different pieces of classical music. :(

This is kind of awkward but the first time I heard this peace was in "Caligula". I thereafter started doing research on Khatchaturian and just fell in love with his work.
I love Khacaturian and his music I'm in the same opinion with the people says that Khacaturian belong to all humanity.. How lovely his music I can listen it over and over..
there is a comment that we are the best nation in the world because of.... i am an armenian . we are not the best , we have some unique things that makes us different. turks , kurds, mongols, persians, and some other muslim and barbaric nations destroyed what we build for centuries sometime in front of western world eyes , but because we had our own language, letters, and culture we were able to indoor and build and create again against all odds . lets remain humble and loving.
One could be forgiven for thinking this music was written by the angels. I would love to play it, I am an adult beginner and need a simple version. Does anyone know where I am able to purchase 'easy piano' for this heavenly music?
GREAT musical unversal as it is written. Performance could somewhat slower here and there, but what the heck, just listen and njoy! DIVINE to listen to.

Beautiful, absolutely spell binding! Hey, everybody don't forget, "Music is a universal language." Music speaks to your soul whether you are east or west or north or south. There are no boundaries to beauty, love, and music.
He was a proud Armenian. No harm in being proud of him for being armenian by armenians either. If this was written by any other composer, it would still be special - but, it's nice to get a mention :)
I absolutely love this piece! I'm playing it in my orchestra, and I have to say there is something absolutely special about this piece. For the cello part, it kinda sounds like we are taking a journey across the desert with the cresendo at 2:10 , but our pizzicato really blends with the piece to make it fantastic at 2:20.
@Flcracker94 A friend's girlfiend's grandfather (tenuous link I know) is a well known composer in Scotland and has worked with Shostakovitch. He has a framed picture in their home of the two of them together. I nearly collapsed when I saw it.
My favourite of his is Piano Concerto No.2 but Prokofiev is still my favourite of them all.
I have great admiration for the Armenian people. It is a small nation that has suffered the oppression of its neighbor for eons; it was never the aggressor. And it has produced some great minds: not only Khachaturian but also Ambartsumyan and our great American writer William Saroyan. By the way, I am NOT Armenian, not married to one, or anything like that.
After 2000 years Armenia exists again as a nation; there is justice finally.
@gattamelata1940 regardless their land will remain their land in the end, regardless of how many opressors attempt to take over. But for a time, yes, there is justice
@gattamelata1940 Not to forget the many Armenian top chess players. Petrosjan, world champion in the sixties. Vaganian, Sovjet champion in 1989. And ... Gary Kasparov, who had to change his name from Harry Weinstein to Harry Kasparian (his mother's name) to Gary Kasparov. He is half Jewish half Armenian. Apart from the jewish nation, the Armenians have the most geniuses pro capita from all people.
@kinglew97 From the U.K. You can't dismiss the lands that created people like Einstein & Beethoven, not to mention the discovery of paper, the supernova, and numerous other staggering contributions to science and the arts. Wikipedia is your friend. Look at the pages on that site or another more credible source on German or Chinese contributions to the world and you'll see where I'm coming from.
My intention was not to belittle the achievements of other nationalities nor did I in my comment.
I always imagine myself lost on an ocean in a raft at night. There I begin to hallucinate and see a multitude of phosphorescences and colors in the sea the ocean mermaids all assortments of magesty and wonder then I turn to my utter awe (kick in 6:06) I see the moon brighter than ever, larger than you could possibly imagine rising over the night horizon. I raise my arms up in amazment
@MountArarat7 My problem with national pride is the unreasonable using of or referring to it. I have many wonderful armenian close friends but don't think that they are lovely or close to me because they are Armenian. The same applies to this wonderful music. I am sick and tired of people trying to invole politics or ethnic disputes into the art. That's all. I am not sure if I made myself clear, dear MountArarat7 but I certainly tried! lol Wishing you all the best and great summer! Ollie
I always thought that music was supposed to be the "universal language". That's the problem with so many people - too much of this "us versus them" mentality. Don't forget we're all stuck on this ONE little planet for now. Enjoy the genius of the man here who had to work in what was essentially a police state - - - and still managed to produce music worthy to stand alongside the giants who preceeded him!!!
When you feel an intense stream on your soul, a strange sensation of surprise enbraces, and a tear from your eyes fall down. Only in these moments, you know the meaning of art, listening a masterpiece like this.
Who cares about the nationality--the exceptional beauty of his music surpasses all boundaries. Who is not stirred by the colossal uproar at 6:17 all the way to the haunting end? Forget about the passport; this music reaches the corners of the universe.
Armenian, jewish, kurdish, black african, etc. people are allowed to have national (or ethnic) pride. In my country the same pride is forbidden and is kept nazism, because the ideology of this state is MULTICULTURE. It means pulling people from developing countries as much that local people will soon become a minority in its own country. When Armenia begins to pull thousands of people from Africa and Asia a year?
@arschka I hate all culture, I like individualistic thinking more. People are people regardless of their background, and individuals matter but groups don't
Excuse me, but which orchestra is it playing this verison? I'd love to know, this is the best version of the song I've heard, especially at that 6:17 climax! :)
This is such a magnificent, exotic melody. I remember I had it on my radio when I was getting gas for my car and the attendant asked me "What is that? It's so beautiful!"
Que hermosa melodia, me hace recuerdo cuando era nino hace anos atras. Espectacualr la escucho una y otra vez y no me canso de escucharla cierro mis ojos y siento una paz en mi cuerpo cada vez que escucho esta melodia
Of course this is amazing, beautiful work, and I love it as much as all of you. But the one thing this work excels in is introducing people who don't know anything about or think they don't like classical music about true beauty. From that point of view it is a stepping stone. Khatchaturian has a right to be proud of it, in every way. sanjosemike
My god, this isw heaven on earth. Each emotion so subtly and strongly conveyed, breathtaking! Especially love 6:12, infact love it all but that's a particular high point
So lovely. Thanks for the upload.

Of course this is amazing, beautiful work, and I love it as much as all of you. But the one thing this work excels in is introducing people who don't know anything about or think they don't like classical music about true beauty. From that point of view it is a stepping stone. Khatchaturian has a right to be proud of it, in every way. sanjosemike

A very beautyfull melody !!! This adagio was the theme of Drussila the sister of the emperor Caligula in TintoBrass's movie.

The climax at 6.20 is one of the best in classical music.
