  • I've got one of these in the studio... and I LOVE it. it's a beast of an amp, and has the sound i'm looking for on my projects. great amp.

  • Basically, the only thing I've learned about the 14 amps in this series is that you can do djenty nu-metal on all of them.

  • This amp sounds great, too. A very close second for me. I fully agree with others that we need to hear more varied styles played, as well as putting the controls through their paces. Since this is "monsters of high gain", rip it up, guys!!! Lets hear some intensity! Very nice sounding clean channel on this amp.

  • I'm amused at the 'boosted mids as well as scooped' comment. If you actually look at the amp, you can see Misha set the knobs for mids at max, bass at like 2 o'clock and treble at 11 o'clock. Didn't even touch the Graphic EQ. I wonder why I stopped playing guitar, and then I talk to other guitar players.

  • How about using the lead channel for some real leads!?

  • Jesus... Misha makes this amp purrrr

  • why would anybody review an amp with an effects pedal in front of it?

  • After listening to all of these, I'd have to say that this is my favorite, and the 6534+ comes in second. And I'm pretty sure this one's the most expensive. Go figure haha.

  • @jdh0858 Nope, close second though at $3,800. The most expensive they do is the Diezel. Over $4K.

  • @INeedSizzors61 Shame the markup is so much on Diezel in the US. I think it's the import costs. We have the same problem with MESA here in the UK.

  • @shredx81 It is. Diezel's are also few and far between here too.

  • 03:20 - FIlter's "Where do we go from here", brings back the memories :D

  • Ty played the opening riff from Withered by Atomship. A fantastic band that released one amazing album then collapsed.

  • @crabspasm It's actually originally a Watership Down song, and they're still going strong.

  • By saying "different guitar players" you mean "guitar players with different coloured guitars", right?

  • $3500 ????? FTS ...!!!!

  • this amp is weak

  • I love mishas first riff.

  • 3:19 without blablabla

  • Neither one of these guys is qualified to change the strings on Synyster Gates' nephews guitar, let alone have people talk about how good they are. There are high school kids practicing down the street from me right now that have ten times the chops that these two hacks have.

  • @alchemycustom1911 Im not a fan of misha but I suggest you listen to periphery, oh and avenged fag fold are garbage posers queers.

  • @FirePower3006 Apparently you flunked reading comprehension in grade school, or perhaps you are still in grade school and haven't had it yet. I said Synyster Gates' nephew. I don't know anything about his nephews band but they gotta be better than these toolbags.

  • @alchemycustom1911 Your fucking retarded I said that because you mentioned synyster gates, why else would mention him instead?

Obviously you didn't listen to periphery, not my thing but the talent is there.

  • @FirePower3006 Where's your band playing this weekend?

  • @alchemycustom1911 Which band?

  • I always find that a more traditional amp like the jcm900 plus an overdrive pedal gives a better highgain sound.

  • Bulb

  • BREEZE *O* im not a misha fanboy , i just like his style.

  • It would have been cool to see what effect all of those switches and knobs had on the overall tone instead of just playing one sound per channel. And even then the guitarists have it dialed in for nu metal and djent, both of which have shit tone in my opinion. Not really a good representation of the amp.

  • Players will sound different even if they use the same amp. And I think that many times, if you play the same way, the same person will sound VERY similar even running thru different gear. For instance; for me it's hard to tell, just from audio, when my favorite players change gear.

The whole point is that they sound pretty similar but we, as viewers, apply those subtle differences between amps and garner what our own sounds need. That's why there are the same players in each vid.

  • Misha makes Ty look like a chump, imho.

  • can someone tell me what tuning misha is playing in, and if that first riff he plays is from a periphery song?

  • @AubreyGroveTV song is Breeze by him in his solo project, tuning is drop G#/Ab

  • I wonder if Misha waxes his arms o.0

  • First amp that Ty sounds way better than the other dude

  • were the first chord progressions that misha played from a song in his band? I'd like to learn it

  • @Brutality110 no, not atleast on the first album.

  • the first "guitar player" plays like a girl. like my 6 year old niece. to hell with posers.

  • @lonewolfsx29 Not really. Ty keeps setting his amp for a hard rock/nu-metal sound. (Mids at 11oclock, Highs at 1 oclock, as much bass as you can get with out turning the sound into mud, Lots of presence and gain).

Where Misha is going for less gain, more dynamics, lots of high mids, and a really tight low end. They sounds nothing alike.

  • Hi-cost amp, and more significant control buttons that produce many variable of characters at the back side of the amp. Indeed the price won't tell u no lies about the quality. My goodness.. this amp will dry my pocket instantly.

  • after seeing all those cool knobs and switches and shit, i was expecting a better sound :/

  • Misha Mansoor is one of the most creative guitar players that I've seen.

  • Comment removed

  • man all these amps are bumming me out, i gotta make more money

  • @translucent17 id say get the randall RT100 that they demo'd but that thing sounds like shit haha

  • @translucent17 hahaha I was thinking the same!

  • @translucent17 I feel your pain brother..

  • This would be a way better if series if the guitarists were different. Both seem to be trying as hard as they can to get all of the amps to sound the same. I'd love to see them demoed with boosted mids as well as scooped.

  • @lonewolfsx29 yep, minus the bla bla bla 3 minutes at the beginning and some midboost/midscoop settings.

  • @lonewolfsx29 Are you deaf? Misha uses A LOT of Mids in his tone. Stop talking out of your ass.

  • @VIIZEROIIV The "djent" sound is actually boosted mids by quite a lot.

  • @FirePower3006 Yes. My point exactly. Can you read?

  • @VIIZEROIIV I was confirming what you said don't get your panties in a bunch when someone is agreeing with you.

  • @FirePower3006 Why didn't you reply to him then? Rather than implying I was wrong?

  • @lonewolfsx29

These amps are actually very good at both.

  • @lonewolfsx29

Dude, it's 2012. Who the hell is still playing with scooped mids..

  • @lonewolfsx29 word Pittbulls excel in the mids.

  • @nunmoreblak thank you for an actual nice comment. You have no idea how much shit I get from random people for that previous comment bc it appears at the top.

  • holy eq!!!!!!!!!!

  • I don't know if the amp setting Ty and Misha are using, but these amp doesn't sound like it has enough bottom end to go with the gain.

  • @ThomasMetal75 Fryette has a cab to go with these for that very purpose. Generally, I don't think the Orange cab was a good choice to go with this.

  • @ThomasMetal75 Whoops, just realized they were using the cab. Probably the mic then.

  • @ThomasMetal75 You get the KT88 loaded Fryette's for more low end. It kinda has to do with the nature of the different tube types.

  • @austinfailz I dont buy the logic there...

  • @ThomasMetal75 Then you haven't the slightest clue about tubes then I take it. I mean, you are aware there is a pretty similar model to this one except with KT88s and not EL34s, right?

  • @ThomasMetal75 Yes. I do. Im not trying to sound like I don't know anything about tubes, but I don't think we need to argue this crap on the video comments

  • this is hands down the best sounding amp next to the randall

  • @FifeXeno Randall? Really?!?

  • @ThomasMetal75 well all of these amps are amazing by faves are this and the randall for some reason

  • the first riff misha played is the song breeze. theres videos of it on youtube. theres also a remixed version with hayley williams vocals from the song misery buisness

  • @13uddha1993 Google 'bulb soundclick' he has a tonne of stuff pre-periphery that is a lot more chord oriented, i wish they would implement that more these days :(

  • @13uddha1993 well he has a lot of songs that were originally instrumental but then vocals were added on with Periphery, the song Totla Mad and Frak The Gods used to be just his works. can't think of any others off the top of my head

  • @13uddha1993 song by Bulb (Misha) called Breeze

  • I like Tys playing alot. Imglad he did the demo.

  • @GtrGeorge sounds like a joke to me, i can walk into guitar center right now and hear a 13 yr old kid who sounds exactly the same..

  • @metallica5252 this is to show the amp sound, not everyone feels like they have to compete and prove themselves and care so much about what other people think obviously you do

  • Is it just me or does the TS-9 kinda ruin this amp? I love djent but this amp (to me anyways) is way better without it.

  • I loved how the CLX sounded grainy on the rhythm channel and they didnt even touch the GEQ.

  • what's the song at 4:09?

  • @NNX7 that's an original song from Bulb, called Breeze. Cheers ;)

  • Imo the best tone Misha got between all the amps he tested with premierguitar was the Peavey 6534+; one of the most brutal tone I've ever heard in my life.

  • My ultralead has an amazing lead tone and it its quite different to a lot of other amps but this is really not a good showcase of its capabilities at all. As ever, if you want to know what an amp sounds like you need to play it for yourself and set it up just how you like it.

  • @Uberloinvongenchler Furthermore, playing an overdriven amp on its own is a very unrealistic exhibition of its sound. They are mostly used in conjunction with other instruments...

  • @Uberloinvongenchler this is the clx not the UL. I have had both. The sound is very similar, but you don't feel the clx as much as you feel the UL when you are standing in front of it. With those kt-88's you know what I mean by FEEL the amp. The clx is a bit smoother, but I just was missing the ball shaking power of the UL when I had the CLX. Definitely getting another UL very soon.

  • VHT / Freyette owns all. Diezels, Diamonds etc etc wish they could have the growl and definition..nope. My next rig is A vht pittbull UL with Splawn Nitro and a Mako mak2 run together. Fuckin cream!

  • @nunmoreblak Just cause they are expensive doesn't mean the vhts are the best. I prefer engl over ANYTHING.

  • @FirePower3006 matter of preference. I happen to think engl's are over compressed and don't cut through a mix well. I had an Ultralead and my other guitarist had a fireball and I couldn't turn low enough for you to hear him over me. The UL has sick rhythm tones. Breathtaking 3d chunk sounds. amazing. I have tried them all but i keep coming back to VHT. Try one before you say what your favorite is.

  • @nunmoreblak My bud has an Ultralead, he likes it, he's got a PRS Custom 22, a USA Standard Strat (Hotstack in the Bridge), and a LP, he says it's a great amp. I liked the Framus here the best, I've heard AMAZING things about Diezels, but of course I don't have a spare 4K sitting around. There's a lot of great amps out there, Engls, Blackstar, Mesa, H&K, 5150 (through Fender), Framus, Diezel, and plenty of others. A lot of it depends on your playing style and the pickups/woods in your guitar.

  • @HurricaneTBag metallicas new tone is based on the diezel and i prefer their older tone with the marshalls and mesas. Hughes and kett makes some very nice sounding amps, even their switchblade tube/midi head kills a dual rec, i have seen them together on a stage. IMHO the VHT had the best tone out of any head they tried on this hi gain challenge. The others seemed too fuzzy, unclear, too gainy or something. The vht was 3d sounding and just right. That is how they actually sound in person.

  • @FirePower3006 btw most engls are very expensive too. You can find a used VHT anything for bewteen 800 and 1600 bucks.

  • @nunmoreblak Yea the ultra lead is one of the best death metal amps ever yet its the expensive one =(

  • love the sound from 5:05 - 5:40! and also the clean channel, damn it´s eargasm!

  • Teraphy? -Nowhere

  • @DopeDethrone exactly de same thing men :) VHT was Fryette jut the name change

  • One of the few metal amps that sounds better WITHOUT a tube screamer. I'm currently saving up for the D60 and FatBottom 4x12 :)

  • would be really nice to hear Misha unscoop the mids i use em myself but shit man either let ty play longer or something.

  • What song is Bulb playing here? It's fucking lovely

  • @rrippp

    Breeze

  • @t3hSn0wB0ardNinja Thanks :)

  • @rrippp The first song he plays is one of his own, called Breeze

  • which is better de mesa boogie dual rectifier or the fryette?

  • @garybigtube depends on your style of play

  • @garybigtube depende que estas jugando

  • @garybigtube lets see.. the Fryette? Theres a $1200 diff, it should be obvious.

  • @NeoMetalx Price has nothing to do with tone, for instance I think the peavey and 6534 and engl fireball 100 both stomp all amps period, second of all them diezel amps that cost like 4000$ sound worse then my roland cube 30w that I use to use for practice and metallica has the worse tone ever and they use them diezel amps nowadays, listen to death magnetic (shitty album and NOT FUCKING metal btw) and you will see how bad they sound.

  • @FirePower3006 Where's your platinum record? Not metal, my ass. That's as close to their good stuff they've gotten in a long time. I like pretty much everything they've done, but Load through St. Anger wasn't very metal. Their tone is beastly as hell. James uses Diezel but Kirk uses Mesa Boogie in his live rack. This is all opinion, but seriously. You've got no room to judge Metallica if you can't write and produce a multi-platinum record to back yourself up.

  • @Seandude223 Diezel amps are shit same with metallica tone on everything after the black album and they are FUCKING MAINSTREAM that is why they sell so many fucking records because they make cheesy rock orientated riffs and vocals (james sounds gay now btw) and put a little distortion and call it metal! Its fucking bullshit, use your fucking hears and don't listen to everything that is popular, same with amps don't use a diezel cause metallica does or because it cost 4 grand use it if u like it.

  • @FirePower3006 Someone's wearing their hipster glasses today. Metallica isn't very mainstream. Mainstream is bullshit like pop and rap. That is mainstream. There is no rock that I know of the could be considered mainstream unless you're talking soft rock. The tone isn't shit at all in my opinion on any of their stuff. I don't listen to much that's very popular. I try to keep myself diverse, though. Pigeon-holing yourself into one genre of music is stupid.

  • @Seandude223 There's the pot calling the kettle black.

  • @SonicProvocateur Whatever, dude. Fighting over the internet is childish. Let's just drop it and set aside our differences and agree to disagree.

  • @Seandude223 I agree wholly.

  • @Seandude223 You also can't judge George Bush unless you've been president of a country with AT LEAST two hundred million citizens for a minimum of six years, and you can't judge Rebecca Black until you make your first hundred thousand dollars off one song. And remember, if Jimi Hendrix were alive today, he wouldn't have the right to criticize N Sync, because they made a great deal more money than he did.

  • @AeolianSeventh I'm sorry, maybe I'm reading too far into this, but were you implying that I was judging somebody?

  • @Seandude223 No, rather the opposite--I'm saying (well, implying) you can judge people without being anywhere near as successful as they are. Making money doesn't mean you're above criticism.

  • @AeolianSeventh Ah, thanks for clearing that up.

  • @Seandude223 metallica sold out. they realized they fucked up and tried to go heavy again.

  • Wrong, Steve Freyette went public with the company and got bought out. The VHT that is selling now is not the same. Freyette is the real deal with Steve running the show. VHT is not ran by Steve anymore.

  • @biblebeltdeathmetal Yeah, my boy Rick has an old VHT and it's way nicer than the current VHTs.

  • I don't know much about fryette PITTBULL are these amps a rip off of VHT PITTBULL?

  • @edhombre It's the same shit, VHT changed their name to Fryette, cause the company owner has a last name, which is Fryette.

  • Bulb FTW

  • joe coffey must have had a lot of coffee to do this 13 fkn times.

  • sounds like the clean channel breaks up easily.. as soon as you have high output p-ups...

  • I'm sure he's a great guitar player, but I haven't come across one video in this series where I actually liked Ty's tones.

  • Gotta love a bit of breeze at 4.07.

  • saying a great guitarist can make a name for himself without a good set up is like saying a professional race driver can smoke you in a smart car. Every portion of your sound comes from equipment, skill and comfortabilty with your gear. I mean you're not going to see Animals as Leaders playing shows with MG100 with Raven cabinets but it won't sound the same. The head is going to scramble your notes and the cab is going to kill your highs and break up your cleans. MEOW

  • Why are they playing chords with high gain and make amps sound bad?? Play power chords and solos!

  • @akdomun If you don't suck at muting and know how to dial in a tone chords sound fine on high gain settings. Steve Vai, Devin Townsend, and Tosin Abasi are great at that. Though, standard Chords probably aren't the best for this type of series.

  • @braklunch im not saying you have to like his style. i understand everything in music i about personal

preference but the dude is def in tune lol

  • @braklunch hahah your an amateur

  • Comment removed

  • Holy cock this amp sounds tight.

  • the Pitbull is the true monster of high gain !

  • Actually, I like Ty's demo work on these and wish he got a bit more time. Not all of us are into shred or play 7-string guitars, and he gives a good demonstration of rhythm tones. Good combination of open chords, palm-muting, and upstroking to give us a solid idea of how the amp performs rhythmically.

  • Misha's such a good player he almost looks bored.... First guy what first guy?

  • is 04:06 to 05.04 a song? I wanna learn the chords so!!! please help! anyone?!

  • @somaAndi It's called Breeze by Bulb (Misha Mansoor) you can find tabs online but they're a bit different from the original songl

  • it sounded better with out the tube screamer

  • @saberbazer THANK YOU. too often the excuse for shitty poorly written material is a lack of money/gear. Shut up and play.

  • This is probably the best out of all 13. Thank you for making these videos for comparison!

  • @saberbazer try recording an album with a spider II

  • Comment removed

  • @LinkinPk1fan who doesn't? ;)

  • @LinkinPk1fan Luckily im a clean player :p yeah i played some VHT amps when they were owned by fryette and they were awsome

  • @saberbazer Just because someone can make a mediocre instrument sound good, does not mean the instrument does not matter. Equipment DOES affect both performance and tone. You're very hard pressed to show that it doesn't. On what grounds? Performance and tone are related. It seems foolish to try to divorce the two on the grounds that if a good player can play on any instrument, cut corners on research so you can spend more time playing. That sounds more like lazyness and lack of initiative to me.

  • @saberbazer ...when you say 'easier, faster, and more convenient' that in and of itself is enough reason to do thorough research. In the studio time is money. For us producers, our own familiarity with our gear, our knowledge of it's capabilities and our ability to get it tracked is a reflection of our studios value. It is worth the time to worry about what gear is in there, just as it is worth our time to find the right sessions players to work with.

  • @saberbazer In my opinion good guitar player can get the crowd wet with his playing with a cheap amp. Good guitar player with a solid state amp will get the crow wet but my ears will bleed in pain. Crowd does't give a fuck about tone, they care about composition, feelings and overall music experience. But good gear gear give a lot for a musician in terms of creativity, new ideas and overall feel of his music. Do not try to combine these two concepts - reception of music and reception of sound.

  • @saberbazer lol...well, I'm not a tonedeaf metalhead...quite to the contaray. I'm a classical pianist, composer and arranger, who runs one of the larger post production studios in my region. I've spent years training my ears to hear these subtle differences, and understand that when required to track heavier sounding cues for movie scenes, commercials and radio adds, the actual character of the amp is always to be factored in the production. I'm not the one playing it either.

  • @kuehling83 thats right. I sold a vht ul and played a 5150 II for a week and wanted to quit. The moment I got a vht again, i was in heaven all over again. So yeah, tone matters VERY much to me. I see bands rocking out on stage playing well, but i just can't get over the shitty JCM 900 tone, ya know that kinda of stuff. yeah

  • Wow. This is one of my favorites in this whole series of tests. I frickin LOVE how this amp brings out every detail in the voicings and linear riffs from that 7 string. Starting at 4:08, It almost has a touch of boutique tone (at least compared to the others in these tests) which I feel is very unique to a high-gain amp. Its got to be one of the clearest sounding hi-gain amps I've ever heard.

Thank you guys so much for doing these tests :)

  • This amp really works well with the 2nd guy's style of playing.

  • @premierguitar

why is the hughes & kettner vid not available for germany?

  • well for the the second guy

  • holy shit the rhythm channel sound fucking amazing

it sounds better than a rectifier and theres not much gain so the notes are heavy but clear

  • Holy crap this amp is expensive! Sounds amazing though! What would be a cheaper alternative?

  • @TheGuitarLads a cheaper alternative would be NOT buying the amp. Fryette(Ex-VHT) amps are kinda unique

  • Haha "Joe Coffey," Both names are for coffee.

  • wot guitars are these guys using

  • @09phillt Bernie Rico Jr

  • Why do you guys always mic directly on the speaker? It seems wierd cos every time i do that i get the worst tone, and i've tried it on a lot of amps. Just wondering if there was any reason you guys were doing it. :)

  • @beenoopo i would have to agree with you. its making me a little angry because this is supposed to be a "tone demonstration" yet they do this. i guarantee the sound they're getting is nothing like what the players are hearing. even their cleans on most videos are far too distorted and lacking any character

  • What's the name of the guitar company!?

  • @DarkVelizar Bernie Rico Jr.

  • @DarkVelizar bernie rico jr. He also makes bc rich custom shop guitars
