I like both games very well, but what I like about Carcassonne is that you almost always get another chance. Someone screws your city up? Then you focus on your other city or pasture. There's always something else to do. It's easy to learn Carcassonne. Anyone can win. But there's a difference between an amateur player, and someone who can see the potential in every chip he draws. In Settlers, you can easily get choked completely by a single move of a lucky opposing player, making it pointless.
I hate rolling dice! Carcassonne involves luck, but the more you play and the better you know the composition of the tile deck, the more decisions can be based on probability
One of the reasons Carcassonne is popular because couples can play it alone. Can't play 2 player Catan, can you?
We like it because it's great 2 player, set up is super fast, putting away is super fast, luck plays a role, but not an overwhelming role most of the time.. You can play casual or really plot...
The dice are kind of a big deal in settlers but you can always play cardstack like the famous game sorry! it balances the probabilities and if you take out a couple of cards you make it unpredictable for the sheldon-likes out there.
"Settlers of Catan is a game for 3 to 4 players which takes 60-90 minutes to play...." Wow, my family consistently does it in at least half this time. Maybe we're just obsessed with Settlers.
i love both these games very much. and both have very different game play. And both by far kick anything hasbro has out aka monopoly and a host of other fairly common american games.
what i like more about carcassonne is that it does not last soo long than settlers catan. to new people you just have to explain some basic rules, and the rest comes during the gameplay. for catan you have to know everything right from the start.

i like both these games, could anyone suggest other similar games?
also is there a standalone version of something like magic the gathering or D&D that is just all in the box, similar to the concept of carcassonne the city being separate from the original and its expansions?
Carcassonne is a better family game for all ages...easy to learn, but as you play it you start to see strategies. Catan is for more of a "math geek" game for those who like calculating stats and probabilities...I find the kind of person who like this game really wants to know more "strategies" than their opponent--so not as friendly for newbies.
Carcassonne is wonderful, the choises and playing on them out is just awesome. Catan is eh.. Fun but.. Yeah, no challenge, no tickle, no excitement, and the time it takes, ugh. But I have not played Catan with any expansions so.
"You could be almost brain-dead and play Carcassonne."
Same's true for Go. Simple to learn, hard to master. A single move can change the entire flow of the game. You need to look at fine details and the big picture.
To win in a game of Carcassonne you need to be strategic, creative, and meticulous. To win a game of Catan you need good starting position, some lucky roles and a half-decent strategy.
The reviewer on the right would destroy the one on the left in a game of Carcassonne.
@ZeroKelvin In regular Catan, anyway. Catan with expansions is entirely different. With expansions, Catan is a lot more strategic, and it has a lot more to it (C&K in particular). In Carcassonne, however, it is hard to punish a player that is getting away with a good position and high points. In catan, there are many balancing factors that allow you to control others, catch the leader, etc. Playing catan with fish, event cards, seafarers, and C&K, is barely luck-based, and much more strategic.
@ZeroKelvin ok so i've been trying to research carcassonne, and you seem to know your shit, can you please give me a detailed explanation on why carcasonne is worth buying???? ps i know nothing about it!!
The one problem with each Catan expansion is that they are worth the same as the main game, and there are three of them. That's 160 dollars, not even counting the 5-6 players extensions. What's more, combining them together is hard. Seafarers plus C&K is not that hard, but adding all the T&B scenarios is...challenging.
I think with all the additions that Carcassonne offers the strategy is greater then Catan in the long run. The argument for which is better is hard to make.
@srynearson1 On the other hand, look what happens to Catan with all its expansions. I've tried Cities and Knights and Traders and Barbarians and Seafarers of Catan. It has around the same depth as all-addition Carc.
Somehow I get the feeling white tshirt guy doens't think highly of Carcassonne...

lol just remembered that there's probability in dice-rolling as well, but like they mention, not so much in a small number of dice rolls.

Our family loves River, Rails, and roads, and Kids of Carcassonne, which is why we love Carcassonne. I much prefer Carcassonne over Catan.

@srynearson1 No one can argue with that ^^.
