@piktrains LOL, funny engine! Love it the UP DDs r way cool. I have aMASSIVE collection of Ho scale and dont even have half opened yet. i even have 14 GEvos and only 4 out of the box. Addiction yup! I could not imagine runnign that thing on my layout just to big. I dig ur wears though brother. god bless ya. u can get these for 75-80 dollars on ebay by bachman.
@frankthetank961 Most Hobby stores sell this. It's made by Bachmann and it's the Spectrum version which is a little better. They sell for around $115. I have Not had much luck with Bachmann and I actually consider them Junk. Life-Like is better. Athearn is even better yet. Stay away from Bachmann. Most repair shops will Not touch them. They need to be sent directly to Bachmann and they charge a minimum $15 service fee for DC and $25 for DCC. I just threw a few Bachmanns out because they are junk
Bachmann released and updated a new version and improvement of their DDA40X. Its been on the market about 6 months. Check out your dealer or look on the Web. Not a UP modeler since I only model what I actually saw. The product reviews are giving the Bachmann DD40AX new version pretty good ratings.
This auction gives a description of Bachmans new DD40 - its quite a bit more sophisticated, has digital cab control for speed direction and lighting, etc they are for sale on ebay, but make sure the cheaper ones are the newer design, not the older "toy" versions
I just looked at the later ones and they claim to be using skew wound can motors, so they may be noticeably better. The older version had little flat sealed plastic pancake throw away motors on each truck, and they were jerky, rough and didnt last long at all. But they were only like thirty bucks then, now Im told they will be more lik $75.00 - $150.00 - Bachmann did make a better grade "spectrum" line that was more of a hobby quality, maybe these will be similar and run decent.
The Athearn DD40 I have has been out of production for some time, the truck sides are metal rather than plastic - Mine ran much better after adding the flywheels and some weight. Im told a later version had one motor before Athearn discontinued them. I got mine years ago from a magazine closeout sale, and had to take whatever road name they shipped, in my case red and white Burlington -- like I said it really pulls some cars-!! Does anyone currently make a nice running one of these-??
Not to slam, but unfortunately the Bachmanns look good but dont run anything like an Athearn or better- the motors and drives are cheaply built, dont give very smooth low speed performance and burn out rather quick. But, there arent that many choices for a DD40 either. I have an old Athearn prototype DD40 with two motors and flywheels that I added, and it will literally pull as many cars as you can put behind it. I had it on my friends layout and we had 58 cars on it, and it pulled them all-!
Bachmann has just re-released these and should be available now,check with your local hobby shop.I don't know about the HO scale,but a lot of their N-scale sux really bad.With Bachmann it's a hit or miss proposition,one might be good the next one is crap.The new ones are supposed to be DCC compatible with a plug and play decoder.Maybe the new ones will be better.
I had the privilege to polish the real 6900 in June. The engine is on display here in Omaha. Threw on a climbing harness and climbed up on the roof and cleaned the thin film of rust off.
It has been long time since I've changed couplers on this one so I can't recall how it looks like in original form. Becouse I run McHenry's Scale Couplers on all but a few of mine trains. Just simply remove the coupler box cover and install coupler and atach it with a small screw. You might need a spacer to prevent coupler from moving around.
Kadee and others makes alot of couplers just check out your local hobby store. There are conversion kits available with spacers for each application.
Thats a 16 wheeler? I guess this particular unit must be used on wide curved track only, and maybe not to be in hills, ect. Sure wish Chyenne Wy Up would use this awsome more often, perhaps from Wy to Northplatte, Nebr.
that is the world largest UP train and they dont even use it. all it is a monument sitting beside bigboy (it was on monster moves on discovery channel)
hey were can i find one of the dda40x locomotives

@SantaFeSam2010
It will do 18" but for more realistic look you need at least 20"-22".

How do you install the knucle couplers? Does kadee produce a coupler other than the #5 for this type of locomotives?
ariels36 2 years ago
I have 3 of those locomotives but since the coupler boxes are part of the truck I have no idea what's the best way to install the new ones...
