Question: Since the health care companies are publicly owned we can easily see that their profit margin is around 2%. We can also see that MOST mutual funds and thus MOST people's 401Ks have these companies in them. So aren't we as the owners profiting only 2% from them? Why then do you want to lower this number? The support structure exists though. It consists of certified, highly educated healthcare professionals. They just aren't being used as effectively as they could be though. The system should reward the health professionals for seeing RESULTS in their patients progress as well. Right now the preventative healthcare professions are getting paid pennies compared to the big time surgical specialists which is debatable how much it's overutilized without results.

People might think this is being hard or even discriminatory against overweight or obese individuals. I'd think of it more as tough love. The bottom line is this not a cosmetic problem but a healthcare problem. Weight loss and sustainability is extremely difficult in a system that does not support such measures. The system needs to be changed to support the aforementioned systematic changes. Its difficult for individuals to lose weight on their own without a support structure.

This additional taxation on these products could go into the medicare fund to pay for their medical costs later. Another example of economic, behavioral modification would be to offer a tax cut for employers that participate in a weight loss/maintenance program. The tax cut could be once again based upon BMI results which is objective measurement which is highly correlated with disease prevention. You could even add ergonomics concepts which should increase the productivity of the workforce.

Another economic manipulation could be to increase the taxation on "unhealthy" foods. Make the tax transparent though so consumers know that they are now paying $4.00 for a 2L soda. So don't hide the tax. There is plenty evidence suggesting that both the decreased cost as well as the increased availability of these foods is contributing to over-consumption in this country. So here is another way to manipulate the market.

Provide an economic incentive for good healthy behavior. One example could be a tax cut for individuals are in the healthy BMI range or that have shown objective progress towards healthy weight loss and weight maintenance. Provide the prevention resources such as dietetic counseling by dietitians and exercise prescription by physical therapists. A healthier workforce will not only decrease costs but will increase productivity. You need to provide an economic incentive to do so though.

The fact remains that unnecessary procedures are being done, and they aren't cheap. Back on prevention, what if a system was devised to incentive health weight loss and maintenance? There is a pretty good objective measurement in this category and it is called the Body Mass Index. What about creating some type of economic incentive to lose weight.

This is not true. The CBO already rated the plan remember? They said it would reduce the deficit. The math is not there for your argument. Where in the world is government run health care working? All I see are countries going deeper and deeper into debt. There is only one country that is not going into debt and they have billions in oil revenues controlled by their government, and that is Sweden. The oldest "social" medical program is the British system and it is failing badly and was started during WWII.

Will someone please tell me of one other county with government run health care that isn't going into deeper debt?
